DEATH and FUNERAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The late Don McDowall

Monicah Wambui McDowall (Don) from Naivasha lost her husband today (14/10/04) the late James Donald McDowall in South London. Family and friends are meeting at 11 Kingswood Estate, Lyall Avenue, West Dulwich, SE21 8PE. Contact 02087667354 or 07956887709.

The funeral of the late James “Don” McDowall will occur on 26th October 2004 at West Norwood Cemetery and Crematorium, Norwood Road, London SE27. The service will commence with a procession from the family home (11 Dowell House, Lyall Avenue, Kingswood Estate, Dulwich, London SE21) at 2:00 p.m. and arrive at the crematorium at 2:30 p.m. - CLICK HERE FOR THE MAP

James Donald McDowall, popularly known as Don, was born on 31st March 1930 in Bradford, Yorkshire where he grew up. He was the second of two children of James and Anne McDowall. Don became an Electrical Engineer and in his chosen profession worked for a few local and international companies, including The Electric Board in Bradford and The Coca-Cola Beverage Company. As an engineer for Coca-Cola he travelled to many parts of the world assisting in the building and maintenance of the company’s many international bottling plants. Some of the countries he worked in included the USA, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, etc.

Whilst in Kenya he met Monica Wambui from Naivasha and they later wed in 1979 in Scarborough, Yorkshire. Shortly afterwards he was offered a new job back in Kenya at Mumia’s Sugar Factory (Kakamega District) and they returned to live in the city of Nairobi. He later went on to set up a business partnership which undertook the maintenance and continued upgrade of electrical works at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. In 1986 Don, Monica and family returned to the UK and settled in West Dulwich, London. He continued to travel back and forth to Kenya, Uganda and of course Yorkshire on holiday’s, business and visiting family and friends. He also made trips to Australia to visit his elder sister, Mrs Jane Jones and her family.

He had lived a relatively healthy life and was rarely ever sick. In August last year he became ill and was admitted at Kings College Hospital. It was there that they diagnosed him with stomach cancer. He underwent chemotherapy treatment at Guy’s Hospital and had an operation at St Thomas’s Hospital to eradicate this cancer. Initially everything went well and he was soon back home living his everyday life. Unfortunately, he later became ill again and his doctors found that his cancer had now spread throughout his body. After spending several months being cared for at home he peacefully passed away on the morning of 14th October at St. Christopher’s Hospice where he had only just spent his first night.   Don was blessed with 5 children; Steven and Jenny - from his previous marriage to the late Dorothy, plus, Patrick, Katherine and Jimmy – from his marriage to Monica. He also had 3 grand-children, Simon, Sophie and Montell.

He had lived a strong, active life and was a seasoned traveller. He was a kind, friendly and generous man who made many friends along his paths. He is lovingly remembered by an extensive family, based in various parts of the world. Those who knew him will also fondly remember him for his love for Kit-Kat's, enjoying strolls, Formula 1, DIY, his distinctive walk (John Wayne), his unique cooking (breakfasts, fish & chips, beef burgers, etc) plus of course, always having a story to tell.

Monica and the entire family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, kind words and support during Don’s illness and at this sad time. We would also like to extend our thanks to the medical teams at the hospitals where he received his treatments and to the doctors and nurses at Paxton Green Health Clinic (Gipsy Hill), St Christopher’s Hospice (Sydenham), the staff at Macmillan Care, Age Concern, all the kind care-workers including our neighbours and many friends who were all a great support to us and our “Dad”.

May he continue his journeys and forever rest in peace.

TRAVELLING TO WEST NORWOOD.

This is a popular SE London area served by various means of public transport. The nearest train station is West Norwood (about 5 minutes walk away). DEATH and FUNERAL ANNOUNCEMENT

A Kenyan boy living in Oxford died after drowning inside a swimming pool in Wales. Dickson Muigai Ombangi, 24, drowned at Maldwyn Leisure Centre, New Town, North Wales, UK on Thursday 25th August, 2004. A youth team of 27 people from Victory Revival Christian Centre, Oxford, had gone to Wales for a one week retreat with their pastor. According to an eye witness, the team went into the swimming pool hardly ten minutes before the accident happened. The late Muigai dived into the water and some members noticed that he was not coming up to the surface. They called the life saver who was on another pool. Strange enough, the life saver was said to have been reluctant and started asking some questions before retrieving the boy and by that time it was too late. The man was hardly one year in the UK. The late Muigai was a son of Nelson Ombangi and Elizabeth M. Ombangi of Roaster, Thika Road, Nairobi. He was a brother to Alex Ombangi, Shem Ombangi (USA), Mesheck Ombangi and Phanice Ombangi. Family and friends in the UK are meeting for prayers and funeral arrangements at Legal Community Centre, Ridgefield Road, Cowley, Oxford as from 7.00 p.m. Contact 07830200041.
