Kenyans in the UK demonstrating outside No. 10 Downing Street
as they hand over the petition to the Prime Minister
Hundreds of Kenyan residents in UK staged a huge demonstration outside No 10 Downing Street in London on Friday 8th February, 2008 condemning the post election violence in Kenya which has caused over 1,000 deaths. They appealed to Kenyan leaders to 'save our beloved nation'. The organisers of the protest were later escorted to the doorstep of No 10 Downing Street to deliver a strong worded petition to British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown urging him and the international community to intervene. Demonstrators started arriving Richmond Terrace, off White Road as early as 11.00 a.m. They started singing Kenyan songs as they walked up and down the street to the excitement of the by passers. Tourists on tour of London on a London bus kept on shouting to the demonstrators in support of peace in Kenya. One pass-by Londoner shouted: "Go on Kenyans, we need peace in Kenya, I didn't know that some Kenyans are animals until this year, how can you kill your fellow citizens." the man shouted as he entered into a bus nearby. Several Kenyans had travelled from Scotland, Reading, Oxford, Leeds, Northampton, Luton, Coventry and Nottingham.
At 3.00 p.m. the team of six Kenyans entered No. 10 Downing Street with the Petition and over 10,000 signatures to present to the Prime Minister. After going through heavy security check-ups, they arrived at No. 10. Before entering the team posed for a photo. Inside the team followed the protocol whereby there is a person who is assigned to take the petition. It was explained that it was the first petition ever presented by Kenya at Downing Street. After presentation which was done Mrs. Mabel Muruli Mark the team posed for a photo outside No. 10 before addressing a press conference where they explained their aims and objectives. While inside No. 10 you could hear the demonstrating Kenyans singing and shouting outside No. 10. Among those who came to support Kenyans was Revd. J. George Hargreaves, Leader of The Christian Party who also addressed the demonstrators. He explained that it was very sad to see Africans and especially Kenyans killing each other. Several other evident documents were among the materials presented to the Prime Minister. After the Petition was read to the demonstrators, they all agreed that Kenyans abroad that agree with the Petition should print and send it to their area MP in Europe or in the USA. - CLICK HERE TO READ THE MAIN PETITION PRESENTED.
