KShs.28 billion for three Boeing 777

The new Kenya Airways 777
Kenya Airways took delivery of the first of three Boeing 777-200ER to boost its international fleet. Investments in the three aircraft amounts to Sh28 billion (US$350 million). Two more aircrafts are scheduled to arrive next year. The 777-200ER carries 322 passengers and 20 tones of luggage. It is part of KQ’s modernisation and route expansion plan. KQ Managing Director, Titus Naikuni, while receiving the aircraft at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Presidential pavilion said seven banks had financed the project. They include Export Import (Ex-Im) Bank of America, which forked out US$100 million. Ex-Im also provided a spare engine to KQ. Other banks to contribute to the project are Barclays Capital (UK), PTA Bank, NIC Bank, Stanbic bank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) among others. "It is a huge project and we are proud of it," said Naikuni adding that "his immediate worry" was how to fill it. Last week, KQ took delivery of the sixth 767-200ER. Yesterday’s delivery brings to 20, the number of aircraft in KQ’s stable. The airline has four 737-300’s; three 737-200; four 737-700; two Saabs and now, one 777-200ER. KQ chairman Isaac Omolo Okero said they were determined to keep abreast with the latest trends and technology in the international airline industry. "Looking into the future, we aim to modernise our entire fleet (as we work) towards becoming a world class network airline by 2005," Okero said.

A Kenyan in the Guinness Book of World Records

A Kenyan in the Guinness Book of World Records - Yes, Kenya's Kimani Nganga Maruge has now won a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the oldest person in the world to start primary school. He hit the headlines around the world earlier this year for being the oldest man in Kenya to start school - aged 84. The great-grandfather started Kapkenduiywa school in the western town of Eldoret on 5 January. Kenya's government introduced free primary schooling in 2003, making it possible for Mr Maruge to attend. Two of his 30 grandchildren attend the same school but they are in more senior grades. Mr Maruge did not have the chance to go to school when he was younger because he took part in the Mau Mau rebellion against the British in the 1950s. He said one of his main aims for starting school was to learn to count the money he expects to receive in compensation from the authorities for fighting against the British. He says he also hopes to learn to read the Bible - because he does not trust the version he hears each week in church. According to the charity HelpAge International, the Mau Mau veteran is one of the top five pupils in his class and has been made a prefect. "He has gone on to pass his first exams in English, Maths and Swahili and an oral exam in reading with flying colours," a spokeswoman for the charity's Africa Regional Development Centre told BBC News Online. The school's head teacher has praised him for the advise he gives to teachers and other pupils.

Dear Kenyans in the UK - Receive greetings from all of us here at New Hope Orphan Children's Centre, Uplands, Kenya in the name of our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ. Match-fixing controversy Odumbe hearing set for July
The ICC hearing into allegations that the former Kenya captain Maurice Odumbe had inappropriate contact with a known bookmaker will be held on July 27. Odumbe and his lawyer met with Justice Ahmed Ebrahim, who has been appointed to investigate the charges by the ICC, at a Nairobi hotel this morning for a preliminary hearing. Odumbe's lawyer stressed that his client had not been charged with match-fixing, receiving bribes or giving information on pitch conditions. He explained that while Odumbe admitted that he had dealings with an Indian, he was unaware that the man concerned was a bookmaker. Odumbe is alleged to have received payments from at least one Mumbai bookmaker in 2002, so that he could coerce his team-mates into underperforming in matches. If found guilty, Odumbe - who has been the face of Kenyan cricket, along with Steve Tikolo - faces a life ban. The preliminary hearing follows an investigation by the ICC's Anti Corruption and Security Unit and a recommendation by Michael Beloff, who is the chairman of the ICC's Code of Conduct commission. Under the ICC's code of conduct, the penalties that the players can face range from a two-year suspension to a life ban depending on the nature of the charge. © Wisden Cricinfo Ltd
