Kicking up with a Christmas Dinner
It is Christmas time once again. Kenyans back in Kenya and elsewhere in the world are torn between two major events happening one after the other. Christmas on 25th December then followed by the elections on 27th December, 2002. As everyone is on his/her mark the Christmas holidays, Kenyans in London have arranged different venues where to celebrate Christmas and New Year's holidays in style. In London the ball was set rolling on Sunday 22nd December with a a well organised Christmas Dinner in a exclusive restaurant, Phoenix Brasserie, Stratford, London. The Dinner which was attended by over 110 guests was organised by Pastor Isaac Thuo Ndugire of Interdenominational World Revival Church, London. With tickets going for £30 each some people had to be turned away as the tickets sold out. The dinner, which reminded everyone who attended about his/her old days was characterised by plays, gospel music and it was crowned by "MUGIITHI" hit song in Kenya. Guests came from far and wide and as far as Germany. The celebrations continued until the late hours of Monday morning. Rev. Isaac has organised a New Years Celebrations on 31st December, 2002 at St. Paul's Church Centre, Burges Road, London E6 2EU as from 8.00 p.m. to 1.00 a.m. The pastor is intending to open a Gospel Disco Hall in London soon.

Human kidneys grown in mice

The mice were injected with pig and human cells
Doctors have managed to make cells taken from human foetuses grow into fully-functional kidneys in a mouse. The technique could offer a more practical way of helping patients who need organ transplants. Thousands in the UK alone are on the waiting list for a new kidney. Even if one is found, the patient will have to take anti-rejection drugs forever. However, just a small number of specially-selected cells taken from the foetus and transplanted into a mouse were able to carry on developing and create an entire organ with all its different parts.
No human source
And while the age of the foetal cells required means it would be impossible to establish a supply from a human source, researchers achieved the same effect with pig embryo cells. This might allow replacement organs to grow from pig tissue without some of the normal problems this might create, such as rejection of the new organ by the human immune system. The advance, by doctors at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, was reported in the latest edition of Nature Medicine. The technique works because cells were taken from the aborted foetuses aged between seven and eight weeks, and from pig foetuses which are only four weeks old.
Early cell
At that time, the foetus is just preparing to develop its kidneys, and a type of cell called a "kidney precursor". This is a stem cell, a master cell that has the ability to divide and become all the different types of cell required to form a fully-grown kidney. Both porcine (pig) and human versions of these cells were taken and transplanted into mice. Both types developed into perfect organs at an appropriate size for a mouse. They produced urine and were supplied with blood by vessels from the host. In addition, there was no dangerous immune response to the new organs - scientists believe because the cells were taken early in foetal development, cells which would normally trigger the immune system were not present. The researchers involved said that a possible treatment might be developed within the next few years. However, while there is growing support for the use of pig organs in transplantation, some experts still believe there is a tiny risk that previously unknown viruses could pass into humans and cause illness. Professor Robin Weiss, from University College London, said the potential threat from "retroviruses" - which are actually coded into the genetic makeup of every pig cell, remained even if organs from adult pigs were not used. He said: "It's exactly the same, no better or worse. "Retroviruses are not a huge risk, but it presents a problem, and it's better to be wise before the event."

British lander gears up for Mars

Beagle 2 should be on the
Red Planet this time next year
British scientists are putting the finishing touches to Beagle 2, the robot that will look for signs of life on Mars. In about a year's time it should be exploring the surface of the Red Planet. The 60-kilogram probe, constructed by a team led by Professor Colin Pillinger of the Open University, should soon be ready to be transported to Russia's Baikonur launch site in Kazakhstan. It will hitch a ride to Mars on the European Space Agency's £110m Mars Express mission, due to take off in June 2003. Professor Pillinger said: "This is a device which is built to try and answer a very fundamental question - is there life elsewhere in the Solar System? "More importantly is this the first step towards knowing whether we are alone in the Universe?" Beagle 2 will be dropped on to the Martian surface to investigate the red rock and soil, and to look for signs of life. It will conduct tests on minerals and rocks using its array of scientific instruments. Signs of carbon isotopes on land or traces of methane gas in the atmosphere would be an exciting discovery. Both are hallmarks of biological processes and suggest life may once have existed beyond Earth. As well as scientific equipment, Beagle 2 also carries artwork by Damien Hirst and music by Alex James and Dave Rowntree from the band Blur. The total cost of the disc-shaped craft - the smallest soft-landing spacecraft ever - has not been revealed. Professor Pillinger told reporters on Thursday it was "in the region" of £30m, although many services were provided free or at low cost by the space community.

Car thief banned on bike

Bike ban ... Danil Wilson
In UK, a thief who cycled round looking for cars to break in to has been banned from CYCLING for three years. Menace Danil Wilson, 23, was also barred from WALKING alone in parts of his home city. He has a criminal record stretching back to his teens and was branded a nuisance by local residents, a court heard. A judge slapped an anti-social behaviour order on him — banning him from riding his bike until 2005. Last night cops warned Wilson would be locked up if he was spotted cycling. A police spokeswoman said: “If we see him breaking the ban he will be arrested. “He could face a custodial sentence.” In May last year Wilson pleaded guilty to unlawfully interfering with a car and was jailed for a week.Three years ago he was fined £20 for damaging a car window as he tried to steal contents. In 1995 he admitted having a screwdriver in connection with a theft. Now Wilson, of Chorlton, Manchester, has been hauled before city magistrates following complaints from residents. Locals petitioned cops claiming he was constantly riding round parked cars looking for soft targets. District judge Peter Ward imposed the order after agreeing his past made him a threat. Wilson was also barred from walking around areas of Chorlton and Didsbury unless accompanied by mum Linda or sister Devika. The cycling ban covers the city centre. He refused to comment as he left court. Basil Curley, the city council’s executive member for housing, said: “Wilson now knows the slightest breach of his order will trigger further court action. “He’s playing with his liberty if he so much as mounts a bike and turns a wheel. “This shows how flexible ASBOs can be.” The orders — known as ASBOs — were introduced in 1999 to enable courts to crack down on tearaways without drawn-out legal action - The Sun, London.

Who is your favourite dancer?
Presidential candidates posing as dancers

WHO CAN BWOGO THIS!: Oh my, what a dance! From our dramatised pictures, which today replace your favourite “From Our Files” and “Bits and Pieces”, the presidential candidates are performing for the gallery. All of them are in their various stages of animation. In this evidently vigorous dancing, the voters are the judges. You only need to open your eyes to see the “dances’’ taking place around the country. Your collective verdict will be given on December 27. Only then will Kenyans know who the best “dancer’’ is — hence our next President. President Moi, being the seasoned “dancer’’ that he is, is only providing the beats. May the best “dancer’’ win. - The East Africa Standard, Nairobi.

Kibaki, Wamalwa receive heroic welcome

Kibaki in a wheelchair, wearing a neck brace with his left ankle in a plaster.
National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) presidential candidate Mwai Kibaki and his running mate Wamalwa Kijana returned to Nairobi on Saturday after spending more than a week of specialised treatment in London following a car crash in which the opposition leader was injured. Kibaki, emerged from the plane in a wheelchair, wearing a neck brace and with his left ankle in a plaster. Thousands of NARC supporters jammed the airport to receive their presidential candidate. Several supporters shed tears after seeing the NARC flag bearer in a worse shape than had been reported in the media.
Thousands of National Rainbow Coalition supporters on Saturday morning jammed the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive their presidential candidate Mwai Kibaki. The supporters who used different means of transport to the airport started arriving before 6.00 am. Dressed in different rainbow colours, the supporters sang songs in praise of Kibaki and other NARC leaders. Business at the busy airport came to stand still as workers and visitors tried to get a glimpse of what was going on. Kibaki and Wamalwa home-coming exceeded Kenneth Matiba’s arrival when he came back from London at the dawn of multi party elections in 1992. The Kenya Airways plane carrying the two Narc leaders touched down at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) shortly before 7.00am. Kibaki and Wamalwa then met NARC summit leaders for three hours at the airport. Outside the airport, NARC supporters went a round chanting songs in praise of Kibaki with some carrying banners that had clear party messages. Security officers had difficult time controlling NARC supporters.
Then, at exactly 9.30am, Kibaki emerged in Nissan vehicle in a wheelchair, wearing a neck brace and with his left ankle in a plaster. The mood changed, several supporters shed tears after seeing the NARC flag bearer in a shape worse than had been reported in the media. The Embakasi NARC parliamentary aspirant David Mwenje took over the show and welcomed Kibaki before inviting NARC summit leader Moody Awori who in turn invited Fr. Wamugunda to pray for Kibaki and Wamalwa. Then Mwenje invited Kibaki to address his supporters who had been waiting to receive their presidential candidate back from UK. As Kibaki started speaking, it was a joyous moment for NARC supporters to hear him speak after a week of absence from the political scene. Addressing the crowd at the airport, Kibaki thanked Kenyans for their prayers during his stay in hospital. “Thank you all for your support and prayers,” Kibaki told the crowd amid cheers before he set off from the airport in a convoy of vehicles to Uhuru Park for interdenominational prayer service. Kibaki and Wamalwa then greeted Nairobi residents along city roads. Their motorcade drove along Outer Ring, Jogoo Road, Landhies Road, Moi Avenue and Kenyatta Avenue before heading to UhuruPark for an inter-denominational prayer meeting causing heavy traffic jam on city routes.
Addressing the crowd at the airport, Kibaki thanked Kenyans for their prayers during his stay in hospital. “Thank you for your prayers and support during my stay in hospital and only God can deliver and make us emerge victorious in the next general elections,” he told the crowd before he set off from the airport in a convoy of vehicles to Uhuru Park for interdenominational prayer service. Kibaki said God had been faithful in showing them the way and hoped that all will go on well for the opposition. He called on Kenyans to preach peace during the electioneering period. “Always sing the national anthem, that song is a prayer that every Kenyan should sing starting today and I am sure and convinced that we will win the elections,” he said as the convoy of vehicles left. Their home-coming exceeded Kenneth Matiba’s arrival when he came back from London at the dawn of multi party elections in 1992. The Kenya Airways plane carrying the two Narc leaders touched down at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) shortly before 7.00am. Kibaki and Wamalwa then met NARC summit leaders for three hours at the airport. The two leaders then greeted Nairobi residents along city roads.
Their motorcade drove along Outer Ring, Jogoo Road, Landhies Road, Moi Avenue and Kenyatta Avenue before heading to UhuruPark for an inter-denominational prayer meeting. The two, were received by all Narc Summit members, who included Raila Odinga and Moody Awori, Prof. George Saitoti, Kalonzo Musyoka, Charity Ngilu among others. Prayers at the airport were led by Fr. Wamugunda who thanked God for the gift of life and for the safe journey for the two leaders. Kibaki was transferred from Nairobi Hospital to the Wellington Hospital in north west London on December 3 for specialised treatment. He had sustained a fractured right upper arm and dislocated right ankle following an accident along Mombasa Road the previous day. The accident occurred as Kibaki’s entourage were travelling from a series of campaign rallies in Kitui District. Wamalwa was admitted at the same hospital after suffering a bout of gout when he visited Kibaki at the London hospital. Narc Summit members have been continuing with the campaigns despite the absence of the two - KBC, Nairobi.

The leaders of Ethiopia and Kenya put security at the top of the agenda at talks with United States President George W Bush in Washington. The White House meeting with Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi had been planned some time ago but was given added significance after last week's attacks on Israeli targets near the Kenyan coastal resort of Mombasa. Three suicide bombers killed nine Kenyans and three Israelis by driving a vehicle full of explosives into a hotel last Thursday. At the same time, missiles narrowly missed an Israeli passenger plane as it was taking off from Mombasa airport. The US has warned there may be more terror attacks in East Africa. On Wednesday the UK closed its High Commission to Kenya after an unspecified security threat.
Mr Bush welcomed the Kenyan and Ethiopian leaders as "two strong friends of America... two leaders of countries which have joined us to fight the global war on terrorism". He has said he believes that al-Qaeda was involved in the Mombasa attacks but said before the meeting that he was confident Osama Bin Laden's network was being dismantled. Mr arap Moi said he was most concerned with the security in and around his country and the global fight against terrorism. He was echoed by Mr Meles who said: "We believe that the war against terrorism is a war against people who have not caught up with the 21st century, who have values and ideals that are contrary to the values of the 21st century. "And in that context, it's a fight not between the United States and some groups, it's a fight between those who want to catch up with the 21st century and those who want to remain where they are." The meeting in the White House, which was attended by Secretary of State Colin Powell, Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, also covered the fight against Aids, efforts to end civil war in Sudan, regional drought and economic development.
Kenya and the United States are currently holding joint military exercises in the Manda Bay naval base on the Kenyan coast. Operation Edged Mallet began two day before the Mombasa attacks and are part of a programme of military co-operation dating back to 1996. Thirteen suspects have been detained in connection with the Mombasa attacks. They are reported to be mainly Pakistanis and Somalis. Two "Kenyans of Arabic origin" were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the failed missile attack on the Israeli plane, police said. Some US officials have said they believe that Somali group Al-Itihad al-Islamiya (AIAI) carried out the attacks. The Ethiopian Government has long accused the Transitional National Government in Somalia of having links to terror groups. The US is setting up a new military base off the coast of Djibouti as part of its war on terror. Some 1,200 marines are based on a warship in the Red Sea, between Djibouti and Yemen, where al-Qaeda has had some cells.

Smallpox vaccines for every man, woman and child in Britain
|
Horror ... how smallpox can affect its victims |
Alert ... ambulance crews practise for germ attack |
Smallpox vaccines for every man, woman and child in
Britain are now being stockpiled in case of a germ warfare attack. Ministers
have doubled the original order for jabs from 30million to 60million, Downing
Street announced last night. They insist the move is merely a precaution and
admit mass inoculation could kill 60 people and leave 60,000 seriously ill. The
Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, said the risk of side effects meant
mass inoculation was a last resort. He said: “We would only consider vaccinating
large numbers of people in the event of an actual outbreak.” But 700 key health
workers and troops could get the vaccine now so they can deal with any crisis.
Half will be personnel from the newly formed Nuclear, Biological and Chemical
Regiment and half will be NHS workers. And 12 regional disaster centres are to
be set up by the end of next month.
Details of the dramatic emergency measures came as a poll showed three-quarters
of the public fear Britain will be hit by terrorists within weeks. Ministers
said the decision to increase vaccine stocks and inoculate key workers was not a
response to a specific threat. Defence Minister Lewis Moonie said: “The
current assessment is that there is no immediate threat. “However, the
consequences of any smallpox release could be very serious, so we continue to
monitor the threat closely and take precautions.” Health Minister John Hutton
added: “Since the tragic events of September 11, the Department of Health has
strengthened its plans against any deliberate release of biological agents,
including smallpox. “It is sensible and prudent to ensure that the NHS can deal
effectively with any potential threat.” Millions of people over 40 had smallpox
jabs when they were children. But health officials say that protection
eventually wears off, so those people will need booster jabs if immunisation is
necessary. There are fears that Osama bin Laden’s al-Qa’ida network or Iraqi
dictator Saddam Hussein could be trying to get the virus, which has not occurred
naturally anywhere in the world since 1980 following a successful vaccination
campaign. Tory shadow health secretary Dr Liam Fox said: “The limited programme
announced today shows that the Government has genuine concerns about a
biological attack involving smallpox. “It is essential that the Government is
honest with the public about the scale of any potential risk.”
SMALLPOX is a highly contagious disease that kills a third of victims. Sufferers develop a fever, then a rash which turns into ugly open sores and blisters that leave deep scars. The virus — spread through the air or by skin contact — last occured naturally in Somalia in 1977. It was wiped out by vaccination but some countries kept stocks in labs. Supplies were stolen from Russian labs after the Cold War and are feared to have fallen into the hands of terrorists and rogue states. Experts believe there would be a massive death toll if terrorists released the virus. Britain stopped vaccinating against smallpox in 1971, but the Government has stockpiled vaccine — as have authorities in the US, Australia and Canada.

SACOMA wins one of the Highest Awards
THE YOUNG CHARITY WITH GRAND ACHIEVEMENTS
Last Friday 29th November, 2002, SACOMA was awarded the prestigious Investors In People standard by the Learning & Skills Council, London East. The award is given only to organisations and companies that demonstrate a practical commitment to training and overall development of their staff in order to enhance their performance and delivery of service. A local charity, Sahara Communities Abroad (SACOMA) working for immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa seems to have got off to a flying start. The organisation, based in Ilford, Essex (UK), has been in existence for barely two years, but it has been winning key awards in the voluntary sector out of its commitment to quality service.

Presenting the award at a dinner ceremony held at the Penthouse, Mr Mark Rook from LSC London East said although SACOMA was a young organisation, it had put into place operational systems that would be an envy to bigger and well resourced organisations. The chief guest, former Redbridge mayor, Councillor Filly Maravala said there is need for more partnerships between local authorities and charities such as SACOMA, which are a better deliverer of services, are less bureaucratic and are often closer to communities that are hard to reach.
Councillor Maravala who is also the Labour spokesperson for Social Services said for Britain to continue claiming to be a compassionate society then “we must make it easier for charities to function through proper and sustainable funding.” “On their part, charities must ensure transparency and accountability in their activities. They must able to demonstrate how the public benefits from their activities,” said Cllr Maravala.

The Investors In People is the highest quality standard an organization, company or institution can achieve in the UK. And to SACOMA it was like an icing on the cake of other awards won earlier in the year. Last month SACOMA won the Excellence In The Voluntary and Community Sector. At a personal level, SACOMA’s Chief Executive Mrs Perez Ochieng became the first black to win the national Fundraiser of the Year 2002 award run by the Institute of Fundraising.
SACOMA was founded by a team of five people two years ago to help relieve poverty, distress and poor health among immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in the UK. Over the past two years, the organisation has seen its client base rise from an initial 3 people per week to over 20 people per week.
