Two killed in Nairobi City
| Twenty-eight-year-old welding engineer, Raphael Oyando Odero, who is a victim of the Mathare skirmishes is recovering at the Geomayogo Medical Clinic and Maternity in Mathare Area 4A. He suffered deep cuts in his head and arms. - East Africa Standard, Nairobi. |
|
Two people died after night-long skirmishes between two rival groups within Mathare slums. The two people were hacked to death with pangas, axes and other crude weapons by a rival gang believed to be Mungiki sect members that confronted them as they marched home from Sunday’s Rainbow Alliance rally at Uhuru Park. The dead were fished out of the filthy Nairobi River by police and the bodies transferred to the City Mortuary awaiting post mortem examination.
Several others were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) by St John’s Ambulance personnel who were called to take the injured to hospital. Twenty-eight-year old welding engineer, Raphael Oyando Odero narrowly escaped death but sustained serious injuries when he met the gang. He sustained deep cuts in the head and arms but was rushed to a clinic by good Samaritans. Odero said that he was going to the shop when he was confronted by the group which asked him to identify himself. “They suddenly attacked me with pangas, axes, rungus and other crude weapons. I tried to block the blows but they chopped my hands,” narrated Odero at the Geomayogo Medical Clinic and Maternity in Mathare Area 4A.

Another nose for Michael Jackson
|
|
Michael Jackson has had more plastic surgery on his nose — and carries an umbrella in front of his face to protect it. The singer, 44, wore a bandage over his hooter and had a minder carry the brolly during a visit to a Las Vegas museum. When a fellow visitor to the Guinness World of Records asked what was wrong, Jacko said simply: “Had another surgery.” The star has been staying in the gambling capital with his two children for the past two months. Last week he splashed out on a £22,000 gold-plated coffin from an undertaker in the city. |

Hurricane Isidore threatens Mexico

Isidore brought heavy rains in western
Cuba |
Hurricane Isidore, which has pounded western Cuba with strong winds and heavy rains, is heading towards Mexico, threatening its south-eastern Yucatan peninsula. Isidore has strengthened into a category three storm in the Gulf of Mexico, with winds reaching 195km/h (125mph), the US National Hurricane Centre in Miami (NHC) said. Mexican authorities closed several ports and evacuated hundreds of residents, amid warnings that the storm may cause heavy coastal flooding in the northern part of Yucatan.
The authorities declared state of emergency in several coastal towns of the peninsular, and said they were prepared to evacuate up to 50,000 more people. "This could be the biggest evacuation of people for a hurricane in the history of the state," Yucatan Governor Patricio Patron said. There were also fears that Isidore could turn into a powerful category four hurricane, which could cause extensive damage. Meteorologists said the slowly drifting storm did not pose a threat to the US Gulf Coast, but warned it could still change its trajectory.
Downpour in Cuba
On Friday, Isidore battered western Cuba, with winds of up to 160 km/h (100mph) and heavy rains. The storm uprooted trees and blew off some rooftops in Mantua, about 140km (85 miles) west of Havana, before moving towards the Gulf of Mexico. About 250,000 people and thousands of farm animals were evacuated in Cuba's Pinar del Rio province, and the island's civil defence programme was activated. No fatalities have been reported.
Cuban President Fidel Castro travelled to the worst hit area to personally supervise evacuation and emergency measures. He heaved a sigh of relief after the storm veered from its initial trajectory, when it threatened to batter more populous areas of Cuba. The storm dumped about 63cm (25in) of rain in 24 hours, damaging tobacco stocks, the source of the best leaves for Cuba's famed cigars. As the storm pulled away, President Castro said it would not hinder Cuba's efforts to recover from the damage caused by last year's Hurricane Michelle, which destroyed thousand of homes. Michelle - a category four storm which battered Cuba last November - killed five people and cause $1.8bn damage.
US aid
The food crisis caused by that hurricane led to the first US-authorised commercial shipments of food to the communist island since the US imposed a trade embargo in 1962. In 1998, Hurricane Georges also left six people dead in Cuba and hundreds killed across the Caribbean. The constant damage wrought by hurricanes has led to the formation in Cuba of local neighbourhood watch groups which co-operate with civil defence officials. The Atlantic hurricane season typically lasts from June to November. The storms which form later in the season tend to be more slow-moving, giving them more time to gather force, heavy rains and potentially deadly floods. - BBC, London.

Parents guilty of killing daughter
![]() The couple blamed each other for Ainlee's injuries |
Ainlee was "grossly emaciated" |
Screams
Prosecutor Ann Curnow QC told the Old Bailey Ainlee, who weighed only 21lbs when she died, was "subjected to a sustained campaign of torture". Her screams were heard by neighbours and she was malnourished, having not been fed for at least two days before she died. Child specialist Professor Jonathan Sibert told the court: "It was a horrendous pattern of neglect. This was the most appalling neglect that I have ever had knowledge of." It took two hours for pathologist Dr David Rouse to list all 64 of Ainlee's injuries - which included 10 cigarette burns and scalded feet where she had been made to stand in hot water. As she was sentenced Labonte broke down in tears. Judge Mr Justice Leveson told them there was "overwhelming evidence" of cruelty to Ainlee. He added: "In the end she lost the will to live.
"Nobody that was not involved or who was not complicit in inflicting such terrible injuries could possibly have stood by and done nothing. "The only possible conclusion is that you were in it together. It would be wrong to differentiate between you." The couple's other two children are now in the care of Newham social services. A multi-agency review into the circumstances of Ainlee's death is now under way. Labonte had been cautioned by police in 1999 after neglecting another child. The family had initially been housed in a residential unit to help them cope with parenting, but left six days after Ainlee was born. By 2001 the social services file was closed on the family because Labonte and Henry refused to co-operate. They had been removed from two GP registers, and two home visits by doctors had been made under police escort.
Medical records 'stolen'
There were threats of violence to hospital staff and medical records had allegedly been stolen by Labonte on at least two occasions. But there was no evidence of any ill-treatment towards the child up to the point when she was last seen in August 2001. Kathryn Hudson, head of Newham Social Services and chair of the Child Protection Committee said they were "very sorry" about Ainlee's death. She added: "When you have families who are deliberately setting out to deceive you and manipulate the situation, unless you concentrate on the child, it is very difficult to protect the child and sadly we did not maintain these standards in this case." - BBC, London.

God still in the healing business

It was a great moments for the Muthamo's family. Family and friends joined the family to thank God because of healing Mrs. Tabitha Wanjiru Karani (left). Mrs. Karani came to London in April for a kidney transplant. After arriving in London in a serious condition her sister and friends prayed for her before taking her to hospital. After the prayers she recovered. All the same she attended the hospital since the arrangement has been made. Doctors diagnosed her and the result was clear - hence no need for an operation. The most interesting thing is that the same thing happened to their mother in 1998. She came very sick in London and after praying with Rev. Ruth Mungai from Nakuru who was then in London she recovered and went home. To date, the old lady is still fine. Mrs. Karani is a sister to Rev. Venesa and she is due to leave for Kenya next week. Posing with Mrs. Karani is her sister Rev. Venesa (second left), Beth Kimani (third left) and Isaac (far right). For details you can contact collinsangel@excite.com - 16/09/02

Food crisis in Southern Africa is worsening

Crops have failed across southern Africa
The United Nations says that the food crisis in Southern Africa is worsening, and that almost 14.5 million people in the region are in urgent need of food aid. A senior UN official said the intensity of the crisis was increasing faster than expected and said the situation had deteriorated most in Zambia and Zimbabwe, where a disaster could only be averted by urgent action. World Food Programme director James Morris said drought had combined with the HIV/Aids pandemic and politics to create "a crisis of incredible proportions". His estimate, that 14.4 million people need food aid, represents a 1.6 million increase on the previous UN figure and constitutes the region's worst food crisis in a decade.

'smuggled onto UK flight'

Neil Wallis, editor of The People newspaper which carried out the investigation, said the security lapse exposed a serious risk to passengers. "The idea that less than a week before September 11, at a time when every security organisation is saying to be careful, we can simply stroll through the busiest airport in Britain with weapons is a major problem." - BBC, London.
