Pelican pick up an unsuspecting pigeon

It's a dog eat dog world, or in this case bird eats bird. Maybe London Mayor Ken Livingstone has found a new weapon in his war on pigeons. People strolling through London's St James's Park were left shocked when a pelican picked up an unsuspecting pigeon, and swallowed it. The Eastern White pelican struggled with the desperately frantic 'flying rat'in its beak for more than 20 minutes before swallowing it whole. Photographer Cathal McNaughton, who was taking pictures of the wildlife in St James's Park, witnessed the brutal attack. He said: 'The pelican was on the towpath preening itself, and there were a lot of tourists watching it. 'Then the bird got up and strolled along until it reached one of the pigeons, which it just grabbed in its beak. 'There was a bit of a struggle for about 20 minutes, with all these people watching. 'The pelican only opened its mouth a couple of times. 'Then it managed to get the pigeon to go head first down its throat. It was kicking and flapping the whole way down.' The pigeon was definitely alive when it reached the pelican's stomach, Mr McNaughton added. A spokeswoman for the RSPB said the incident was very unusual. She said: "It is almost unheard of for a pelican to eat a bird. Their diet should be strictly fish." There are currently five pelicans living near Duck Island in St James's Park - four Eastern Whites and one Louisiana Brown. Pelicans were introduced into the park during King Charles II's reign as a gift from the Russian ambassador.

Million in one
|
Million to one: That's the odds of conceiving Alicia (left) and Jasmin Singerl, who were born in Caboolture Hospital in May. |
The parents of the twins |
Beautiful baby twins Alicia and Jasmin Singerl certainly make people look twice. Alicia has dark brown eyes and complexion, while Jasmin is blue-eyed and fair-skinned. Experts say the chance of twins being born with such different physical characteristics is about a million to one. Conceived naturally, the sisters from Burpengary, north of Brisbane, were born at Caboolture Hospital in May. Mum Natasha Knight, 35, is of Jamaican-English heritage, while their father Michael Singerl, 34, was born in Germany. The couple, who are engaged, also have five-year-old daughter Taylah, who is blue-eyed with blonde hair and a light olive complexion. Ms Knight said she was shocked when she saw how different her daughters were. "It's just amazing, they are so different," she said. "When they were born you could see there was a colour difference straight away. We couldn't believe it. "Alicia's eyes were brown and her hair was dark. Jasmin's eyes were blue and her hair was white – you could hardly see her hair or her eyebrows.
"We were joking when I was pregnant about what if one baby looked like me and one looked like Michael. We joked about one light one, one dark one, so it was amazing when it actually happened. "When we go out people stop and ask if they are twins. Other people will look but not say anything. Maybe they think I am babysitting one of them. "Someone even asked me if I was sure there wasn't a mix-up at the hospital. But there was no mix-up – they are my girls and they are both so beautiful. "It will be interesting when they go to school, and they will probably wonder why they look so different from each other. I guess the easiest way to explain it will be to say one took after Mum, one took after Dad." Genetics experts say that in most cases a mixed-race woman's eggs will be a mixture of genes for both black and white skin. However, much more rarely, the eggs may contain genes for predominantly one skin colour.
In this case, Ms Knight has released two such eggs – one with predominantly dark pigmentation genes and one with predominantly fair genes. Non-identical twins are conceived when two eggs are fertilised by two sperm at the same time, which has odds in itself of about 100-1. Clinical geneticist Dr Stephen Withers said the likelihood of a mixed-race woman having eggs that were predominantly for one skin colour was rare enough, let alone releasing two of them simultaneously and producing twins. "It's probably a million to one," he said. "It's a terrifically rare phenomenon . . . extraordinarily rare. "There's two parts of this that are very rare – just having those extremes of eggs, and also releasing them simultaneously." A similar set of twin girls was born in Britain last year. Remee, blonde and fair-skinned, and Kian Horder, who has dark skin, were born to parents both of mixed race.

Sweden planning to build a cottage in moon
The space race saw two superpowers facing off against each other in the inky blackness of the void, as America and the USSR competed for supremacy. But now plans are underway for Sweden to become an unexpected late entrant in the exploration of the moon – and they're planning to build a cottage there. The traditional red cottage is one of the best known features of the Swedish countryside – seen by many Swedes as a symbol of their country. And, according to Swedish news source The Local, the Swedish Space Corporation now wants to put a little red cottage on the moon. The SSC has reportedly undertaken a technical study showing that the little red cottage plan is feasible, a committee of top experts has been placed in charge of the project, and a competition has been launched to design the space-cottage. Fredrik von Schéele, of the SSC, said: 'If we manage to do this Sweden will be the third country to occupy the moon.'

The space-cottage idea was originally conceived by artist Mikael Genberg in 1999. At the time, he thought the concept would be technologically impossible – but after he started making enquiries in 2003, the idea took off. 'The project will cost 500 million kronor [about £36million], which is quite reasonable. I think if we can make absolutely sure that this will happen it should be possible to finance it,' Genberg told The Local. To be transported to the moon, the cottage-making kit must weigh no more than four kilos, and cannot be larger than eight metres square. One suggested mechanism is for the cottage to be inflatable, expanding after the moon-lander has completed its experiments. Sadly, it appears that an IKEA-style flat-pack moon-cottage is not on the cards. Project leaders hope to be in a position to build their cottage on the moon by 2011.

98.7% Luos voted for Kibaki while 62% Kikuyus voted for him
Hon. Raila Odinga the MP for Langata and ODM presidential candidate addressed a gathering at The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London on Thursday 28th September, 2006. Hon. Raila arrived at the venue escorted by several bodyguards at about 7.40 p.m. where he was met by Solomon Mugera a senior producer with BBC World Service and Mr. Phillip Aliker, a Tanzanian who co-ordinated the lecture. After a 40 minutes lecture about Kenyan politics by Hon. Raila, there was question time. During his speech, the Langata MP explained that corruption started way back from Kenyatta's time and what President Moi's regime did was just to perfect it. He explained about the long road to multi-party system in Kenya of which he has been apart of it all. Hon. Raila continued by stating that the presidential race in Kenya is like a tribal race where where tribes competes against each other. They come up with cheap politics of tribes and other useless agendas like who is circumcised or not. At this junction he caused a big laughter when he mentioned that most of the people who complain about who is circumcised or not are men and he wondered why men complain as it is the women who should be complaining of such issues.
"Many things have gone wrong in Kenya, the agreement we had in NAC has not yet been honoured and that is why I had to leave NAC. NAC was formed by a group of desperate people hungry for power. ODM has now taken over the NAC promises." Raila explained. "We have been fighting for the minimum constitutional reforms in order to level the grounds for the 2007 elections. Some of the the minimum reforms include the right to vote while abroad. This is because Kenyans abroad are big contributor to our economy. Last year Kenya received KShs 58 million sent by Kenyans abroad. This amounts to the biggest source of foreign currency coming into the country. Kenyans abroad should not be ignored." he continued. "Dual citizenship is another, funding of political parties by the government and independence of parliament." Raila concluded.
During questions time, Hon. Raila intelligently answered questions from the congregation. Here are some of the questions asked and how Hon. Raila answered:
Question: You were not given the post of the Prime Minister and you as a tribal leader have decided to form ODM to meet your requirements, what do you have to say about this?
Raila: First of all there was no change of constitution and hence there was not post of a prime minister - it is some MPs and other people who suggested about me being a prime minister but the constitution could not allow. Talking about Raila being tribal is not true. It is me Raila who said KIBAKI TOSHA. I convinced my fellow tribe to vote for Kibaki as he was the man to deliver. 98.7 of Luos voted for the Kibaki while only 62 per cent of Kikuyus who voted for Kibaki. How can I be accused of being tribal while I convinced my people to vote for another tribe. It is me Raila who said KIBAKI TOSHA and it me Raila now saying KIBAKI TOKA.
Question: Haven't you seen the good work that the NAC government have done in Kenya?
Raila: Yes, the NAC government has done some good work and we had 5% economical growth. This is not good enough as there some other countries who are registering 14% growth. The services growth has been registered because of money laundering, people who hide money abroad are bringing the money back because they think the country is now safe. Drug money is also another issue. That is why there's a property boom in Kenya. Nevertheless, the truth of the matter is that the life of the common man is worse than before.
Question: You have now formed ODM. According to history you have been moving from one party to another, how can we trust you while keeping on moving from one party to another?
Raila: In Kenyan politics, moving from one party to another is the order of the day. As a politician you have to move to where it fits you. If you look at the records, most politicians in Kenya have moved from one party to another. President Kibaki was the vice chairman of Kanu for more than ten years. Njenga Karume was in Kanu throughout before joining the DP.
Question: Why do you think you are the best candidate the presidential race in 2007. Why do you let President Kibaki continue with his administration to finish what he has started?
Raila: I am not forcing my way in. If the Kenyan public vote Kibaki back to power in 2007, I have no problem with that. It is the public who must demand change. We in ODM are 100 per cent sure that if the elections are called today, we would get between 65-70 per cent of the votes.
Question: What can be done with African countries to shun away tribalism?
Raila: The questions of tribalism has to do with the leaders. The leaders are the one who fuel the issue to benefit themselves. When the late president of Tanzania Julius Nyerere came to power in Tanzania, he preached about unity among the tribes and spearheaded for one language. Today if you go Tanzania and you ask a Tanzanian - 'which tribe are you?' they will know automatically that you are from Kenya.
