Is this Britain's unluckiest man?

Is John Lyne Britain's unluckiest man?

If you ever think life is being a little tough on you, just be grateful you aren't John Lyne – who could well be Britain's unluckiest man. 'Calamity John' has suffered 16 major accidents in his life, including lightning strikes, a rock-fall in a mine and three car crashes. He is presently laid up again after falling down a manhole at work. The 54-year-old industrial cleaner will be out of action for 32 weeks and is not sure he can return to his job. The accident damaged his back and injured his left leg and both knees – which the grandfather-of-three can add to a lifetime of broken bones. But none of this has left Mr Lyne bitter – he is just glad to be alive. 'Everyone thinks it is just hilarious,' he said. 'My mates, family and wife Susan just laugh about it. 'I don't think there is any reason or explanation. Things could have been much worse and I could have died but it doesn't worry me too much.' Mr Lyne's mishaps cover a lifetime and he has even been known to suffer two accidents at once. As a child, he fell off a horse and cart – only to be run over by a delivery van. When he was a teenager, he broke his arm falling from a tree. On his way back from hospital, his bus crashed, breaking the same arm in another place. The date, of course, was Friday the 13th. A philosophical Mr Lyne, of Stainworth, South Yorkshire, said: 'I have had a lot of lucky escapes and people have compared me with a cat with nine lives. It doesn't get me down. It is just how it is.'

World Travel Markets ends in with a High Note

World Travel Exhibition in London ended up with a high note on Thursday 10th November, 2006. Thousands of visitors from all over the world visited one of the biggest tourist exhibition at Excel, East London. Countries exhibiting or trying to sell their country displayed their country in the best way possible. Notably at exhibition is the might power of South Africa where they had booked several stands. The Kenya stand this time was better than last year. Notably absent at the Kenya stand was the high official. The minister was nowhere to be found but instead he was represented by the assistant minister. There was good attendance of visitors at the Kenyan stand and it quite impressing with the Kenyan team. Lake Nakuru team, Mr. Muya and Mr. Kimotho who never miss the exhibition were at the exhibition. This year they want Kenyans visiting Kenya to visit them at Lake Nakuru where they promise to give 10 per cent discount to Kenyans coming from abroad. Yours for the asking coffin

His mission was to boldly go where no man has gone before. And one Star Trek fan did just that when he was buried in the Starship Enterprise. The speciality coffin was just one of many made by a firm whose trade has doubled in the last 12 months, thanks to a boom in bizarre caskets. Vic Fearn and Company has made a pint of beer-style coffin for a keen drinker who fitted snugly into the tulip glass replica. Craftsmen have also created a fast food fan's hot dog coffin, complete with replica onions and mustard. Another customer, a music lover, was buried in a guitar. The most bizarre request received by the firm in Bulwell, near Nottingham, was for a coffin with a removable glass lid. The satisfied customer then used it as a coffee table before he died. David Crampton, 62, director of Vic Fearn, said he thought bespoke coffins would become more popular as people increasingly plan their own funerals. He added: 'I don't think it's macabre. Most of the time it's people saying, “This is me, this is my life and I want to celebrate it.”' Vic Fearn, a coffin maker for more than 160 years, has charged up to £5,000 for a speciality coffin but anticipates higher prices as requests become more bizarre. A regular run-of-the-mill pine overcoat goes for about £400.

A trip to Uganda

Miss Margaret Njiiri (Daughter Seed) a fourth year student at Portsmouth University was posted by the University to USA for her work experience but she refused insisting that she want to go and do her work experience at Kenyatta National Hospital. Going back to the roots. Her parents tried to discourage her due to the conditions down there but she insisted that she want to see her people right from the roots. The parents requested her to change to Nairobi hospital but she stood to her grounds insisting that "they are my people". Off she went for one and half months - September, and October, 2006.  Her journey started with a high note when she arrived at Heathrow Airport and she was upgraded to first class. The airline crew were very friendly to her and they managed to show her the cockpit after arrival. Margaret enjoyed her work placements at Kenyatta National pharmacy department where she found a lot of difference with the UK hospitals. One of her major concern was the difference between Kenyan children in the hospital and the UK children where every child has to be weighed before giving the dose because of the weight difference. In UK they give the dosage by age because of the children are of average weight where in Kenya the case is quite different.

She visited different national parks while in Kenya including her rural area in the slopes of Aberdare ranges. She went to Nairobi National and Lake Nakuru National Park among others. While in Nairobi, her church in London - Calvary Charismatic Baptist Church instructed and financed her to go to Uganda to interview the three girls from New Hope Orphans Home who are currently studying at Kampala International University. Calvary Church pays for the fees of the these orphaned girls. The church spends $30,000 on these girls. The church had asked Margaret to interview the girls for a church magazine in London. In Uganda, she was welcomed by a Kenyan who is a manager of Citibank in Kampala a friend of Mr. Seed. The manager gave them a driver to show them around. One of the dramatic tour they made with the girls was a tour to the source of the great River Nile in Jinja, Uganda - the Ripon Falls. This is the point where River Nile begins to flow from Lake Victory (source of Nile) to the Mediterranean  Sea. It takes three months to complete this journey of 4,000 miles (6,400 km). It was an amazing sport as Margaret and the girls gave a Ugandan swimmer at the venue UShs. 2,000 which is less 50p to swimming in the fast running river Nile for about a kilometre long passing by as they watch. It is a popular sport with tourists around the place. The team also took a boat ride in the Nile before heading back home where Margaret did some shopping for them before heading back to Nairobi. She came back to the UK in October and she is now back to the University.
