Potemkin Russian Restaurant & Bar, right in the centre of City of London between Chancery Lane and Ferringdom underground stations. A Kenyan owned Russian restaurant. Operated and served all in Russian style but the owners are Kenyans Mr. Shadrack Balimo and Mr. Joseph Wamithi. Talk of Kenyans in business but this is a rare venture. Located at 144 Clerkenwell Road, the two floor restaurant can cover up to 100 guests comfortably. Serving only Russian food and beer the restaurant holds the largest collection of Vodka with over 130 different types. With a complete strange menu of which some items never seen on the menu before the venue is good for a change. The food and soup is quite good to make a treat away from Nyama choma and ugali but scanning through the menu you won't miss to come across one dish on the menu - "Meat derived from the 4' long legs of a crab - a sought after delicacy served on a bed of lettuce with a light sauce." The restaurant is trying to accommodate the Kenyan style - birthdays, parties and wedding are now available to book. The venue is good because being in the heart of the city it is busy for five days - Monday to Friday as from 12.00 noon to midnight and Saturdays as from 6.00 p.m. to midnight but free on Sunday. "We can open for a party on Saturday and Sunday for Kenyans functions especially birthdays, parties and weddings at a very reasonable price." commented Mr. Balimo. A treat for Mr. Seed at the restaurant was a good experience rating the restaurant at 9 out of 10. It could have been rated 10 of 10 were it not for the vodka shots on most of the items and Mr. Seed does not for a vodka treat - thus missing the 10th point. The best thing is that they can do your order without vodka. Contact Mr. Balimo 07958575309. - You can visit their website at www.potemkin.co.uk

Man lives in tree for 16 years after domestic spat
An Indian man has been living in a tree for the past 15 years despite passionate appeals by his mother to return home. Kapila Pradhan, 45, a resident of Nagajhara village in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, left home after an apparent tiff with his wife. "My son and daughter-in-law quarrelled constantly after their son was born and their relationship soured day by day," says his mother Sishula. "One morning I found my son had left the house while everybody was still asleep." A month later, villagers found him deep in the forest living in a tree. "I went to the forest to bring him back home but he refused," she adds. "Hurt and rejected I had to come back home. I cried a lot," says Kapila's mother.

Kapila survived a devastating cyclone in his tree house
Kapila lives on whatever he can find to eat in the jungle. "Since I left home I have hardly had any cooked food," he told the BBC News website from his tree-house 7.6m (25 feet) above the ground. "Sometimes the villagers feed him during festive occasions," says a local resident Sukanta Dakua. "However no amount of coaxing can make him leave his tree house," Manoj Sahoo, another local resident, says. Even during a devastating cyclone in 1999 when winds of 300 km/h destroyed large parts of Orissa and killed thousands, Kapila continued to live in the forest. He recalls the terrifying moments when it rained persistently and the other trees in the forest fell one by one. "I just survived as a tree missed me by inches," he said. However more than the cyclone, it was the threat posed by wild elephants and monkeys that forced him to move to a tree closer to the edge of the forest, near a village.

![]() Tulasi and Babuan now live together |
Kapila's life is far removed from the one he once lived. Before he moved to the forest, he was married, and says he was overjoyed when his son was born. The family celebrated and the entire village was invited to dinner. But things soon soured. His neighbours say Kapila's wife, Tulasi, began having "illicit relations" with his younger brother Babuan. Soon after Kapila left home, Babuan moved in with Tulasi and they had a child a few years later. "I am not formally married to Tulasi but have accepted her as my partner because I care for her," says Babuan. He rejects the allegation that his brother left because of his alleged relationship with his sister-in-law and says he began a relationship with her only after he realised his brother was never coming back. Both Tulasi's children address Babuan as their father. With Kapila away from home for more than a decade, his mother has accepted the new family arrangement. But what if Kapila comes back? His mother Sishula says it is hardly likely, but if he does, he should not reclaim his wife.

Judith Kendi Kimemba Emergency Medical Fund Appeal

Mr. Seed,
My sister in law completed her teaching course at Kamwenja teachers
training college early last year. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed to
be suffering from a serious kidney failure and is unable to take up
any employment at the moment.
She was hospitalised at Kenyatta National Hospital for several weeks
but we were forced to have her discharged due to escalating hospital
bills, which we could not afford any more.
Doctors recommended that she could be taken home but should undergo
dialyses at least twice weekly before a permanent solution of kidney
transplant is done. We have identified a willing kidney donor but we
do not have financial ability to enable her undergo kidney transplant
.The total cost of transplant is around Kshs. 1.5 million in India
which is the cheapest.
One session of dialyses and needed medication at KNH costs Kshs.
7500.00 hence we need at least Kshs. 15,000.00 every week. This has
been happening for almost a year now and we have exhausted all
available resources.
We posted an advertisement on the daily nation on Sunday 22nd January
2005 but it is costly to keep the ad running. We have had a few
telephone calls encouraging us and praying with us but very little
financial support so far.
Time is running out on her, as she appears weaker and weaker every day.
We are requesting you to help us by posting this appeal on your notice
board and talking to Kenyans abroad to help.
We trust Kenyans abroad will come to the rescue if this message gets to
them
Attached please find a passport size photo of the patient to place
along with the appeal.

The US navy says it has captured a number of suspected pirates in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia. The guided missile destroyer USS Winston S Churchill went in pursuit of a suspect vessel after receiving a report of piracy, the navy said. When other efforts failed, the Churchill fired warning shots to bring the boat to a halt. There have been numerous attacks by pirates off Somalia, some of the most dangerous waters in the world. The US navy's Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain and patrols the Indian Ocean, received reports of "an attempted act of piracy" approximately 50 miles (80km) off the Somali coast on Friday, it said in a statement.

The USS Winston S Churchill tracked the suspected pirate vessel off Somalia, firing warning shots when its orders were ignored
The Churchill shadowed the suspect vessel, and tried to make contact over the radio, before resorting on Saturday to "aggressive manoeuvring in an attempt to stop the vessel". When this failed, "Churchill fired warning shots. The vessel cut speed and went dead in the water," the statements said. Later an unspecified number of sailors were taken off the vessel and a quantity of small arms was recovered, the navy said. Piracy, including hijackings and hostage-taking, has become common off anarchic Somalia, where there has been no effective central government since 1991. An attack late last year against a luxury cruise liner was repelled by an ear-splitting acoustic device. Shipping companies say there have been 35 incidents of piracy off the Indian Ocean coast of Somalia in the past nine months. The Somali government has signed a $50m (£28m) two-year deal with a private US marine security company to carry out coastal patrols

A mission to an unexplored planet is being launched
A mission to an unexplored planet is being launched for the first time since the Voyager craft left for Jupiter and Saturn in the 1970s. New Horizons' trip to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt Objects will mean that all the Solar System's planets have been visited. The huge distance New Horizons must cross to reach Pluto means it will not arrive until July 2015 - at the very earliest. To achieve that, Nasa must launch the probe before 3 February, so that it can "slingshot" around Jupiter and use the planet's gravity to achieve speeds of about 25km/s (56,000mph). Any later and it will be an unassisted flight to Pluto that could take until 2020. Nasa considers reaching Pluto part of its "historic endeavour" of planetary exploration and New Horizons a chance to "understand worlds at the edge of our Solar System". Pluto and its moon, Charon, form a double or binary planet - an arrangement which is thought to be common, but which has not been studied in detail before.

Antenna: Maintains links with Nasa scientists
It will also be the first time that one of the "ice dwarf" planets and the hundreds of Kuiper Belt Objects beyond Neptune's orbit have been visited. New Horizons will be launched on board a powerful Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida, sometime from 17 January onwards. If the launch takes place on schedule, New Horizons will spend the first 13 months heading towards Jupiter, with key checks taking place. For the next eight years, New Horizons will cruise towards Pluto, being "woken" annually for technical checks and rehearsals for its encounter with the planet. Long before it approaches Pluto, New Horizons will start collecting data. The first maps of Pluto and Charon will be made three months before the period of closest approach. During the day-long fly-by, ultraviolet emissions from Pluto's atmosphere will be measured and the best quality maps of Pluto and Charon, including surface detail, will be made. At the closest point, New Horizons will be 10,000km (6,200 miles) from Pluto and about 27,000km (16,800 miles) from Charon. The probe will then look back at the "dark side" of the double planet to spot haze, look for rings and examine the objects' surfaces. Even then, the $650m (£368m) mission may not be over; with Nasa approval it will travel on to an as yet undecided Kuiper Belt Object for further studies.

HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR OF SLOUGH LAUNCHES A
NEW HOLIDAY PROJECT SCHEME
By D.K.Kamanu
His Worship the Mayor of Slough, Councillor Latiff Khan, launched a New Project on Wednesday, the 21st December 2005 at Horsemoor Green Youth Community Centre.

The Project, Holiday Play Scheme, an exciting adventure for children and young people aged 8 to 13 years from the four Eastern wards of Slough, namely; Langley St Mary's, Foxborough and Kidderminster, has been set up by a community and charitable organisation called 'Means of Survival and Development' (MOS'D), which is based in Slough.
In his Launching speech, the Mayor said that Slough is very fortunate to have voluntary Organisations which are doing very good work to the Slough Community. It is great that you, MOS'D, have achieved this in Slough and I wish you to continue with your good work. He wished the group and all that present a Merry Christmas and a Happy Prosperous New Year, and he, then, declared the New Project officially open by cutting the 'Red Tape', which was held by two young members of the project.

To welcome the Mayor was the MOS'D Interim Director, Monica Siso, who gave a brief history of MOS'D.
She said that Means of Survival and Development, (MOS'D), was established 5 years ago as a response to the diverse issues facing refugees, asylum seekers, economic migrants, many of whom are settled in and around Slough as well as other individuals experiencing economic difficulties. Particularly, and not exclusively, the MOS'D helps people of African origin to find solutions to the many challenges they confront. Many disadvantaged people do not know where to access support and help; some do not know how to even ask for help - whether because of language difficulties, fear of stigma, or faced with a system that is totally foreign.
![]() The chairperson Mrs Joyce Turvey, the mayor and a director Ms Monica Sosi |
![]() The chairperson Mrs Joyce Turvey, addressing the guests |
She continued to say that MOS'D is a part of the community and operates through the energy and passion of the people who are "Survivors". Despite all the challenges and difficulties an individual can face, MOS'D believes that such challenges can be overcome with the support of others who have already travelled through that path, she emphasized.
It is too easy to become excluded in this fast and complicated society and in order to reach these socially excluded people, MOS'D began setting up simple projects to help those hard to reach individuals access other survivors and other necessary services, she explained. People in the MOS'D want to remove the label of "victim", and prove to both themselves and others that they can improve their own lot and help others in the process, in that the existing skills are used to train others, and new skills are continuously learned - which in turn are passed onto other "survivors".

![]() The mayor of Slough, cutting the "red tape" to declare the launching of the Holiday Play Scheme Project officially launched |
The reason for MOS'D's existence is simply put;
· To turn Disadvantages into Advantage
· To turn fear into hope
· Turn isolation into friendship -
· By creating survivors through the support of survivors,
she concluded.
The guests were, also, addressed by the Chairperson of the organisation - MOS'D, Mrs Joyce Turvey and the North West Saturday School Project Director Mr. Alexander Boadi.

Londoners Celebrates year 2006
Thousands of people lined the streets of London to watch the 20th New Year's Day parade. More than 10,000 performers from across the world made their way through the city on a two-mile route from Parliament Square to Piccadilly. Large crowds turned out despite the damp weather and the event clashing with a Tube strike. In previous years the marching bands, clowns and carnival queens have drawn almost half a million spectators. A special message from the Queen was read out by Roger Bramble, the deputy Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, when Big Ben struck midday.

A host of entertainment, including giant inflatable cartoon characters, mods and rockers and vintage cars, then started making their way along the route. Robert Davies, from Westminster Council, said: "It [the parade] really shows what London is really made of. It can attract people from around the world to see what exciting things Westminster and London can do. "It shows everyone how superb we are at organising events like this." London's New Year Parade US senior representative Powell Johann told BBC News the 6,000 American participants took part in the event because London was the greatest city in the world. "It is the finest event in the world of its kind," he said. "There's nothing like it. It's the excitement, it's the warm welcome, it's London." Earlier this week, organisers expressed concerns that a walkout by London Underground staff which was due to end at noon on 1 January, would mean few people would be able to get into central London in time for the start of the parade. But on Sunday parade organiser Bob Bone said: "We are absolutely delighted with the turnout. The streets are packed, despite worries about the transport strike." Last year's event attracted about 480,000 people and raised thousands of pounds for the appeal for victims of the Asian quake disaster.
