Six Kenyans children presents to the Queen

Six Kenyans children were among tens of children selected at Langdon School in East London to welcome the Queen in their school on Wednesday 12th October, 2005. Ken Kangethe played tennis as Daisy, another Kenyan lady presented a poem. The Queen’s visit to the east London Lower Lea Valley Olympic host neighbourhood also included sports demonstrations by students at the local Langdon School, several of whom were in the Bid delegation to Singapore, where the IOC selected London as the 2012 Olympic host city on 6 July. The Queen  made her first visit to the east London Olympic Park site, centrepiece for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Escorted by Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), The Queen inspected progress on the Olympic Park complex from a high-rise viewing platform overlooking the site where key Olympic venues will be co-located for the Games, including the Olympic Village, Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Hockey Centre and Velopark. Inflated colour blimps were used for the Royal visit to identify the locations and early construction and clearance work already underway for several of the sports venues planned in the new Olympic park. The Queen also met with residents of the Holden Point community centre where the viewing platform used by The Queen was installed earlier this year for the IOC’s Evaluation Commission visit to London which included an official dinner at Buckingham Place.

“The Queen’s visit to the Olympic Park today marks another early milestone in planning and preparations for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games,” said Coe, the dual Olympic gold medallist who led the successful London Bid. “The Queen and Royal Family were strong supporters of London’s Bid and it was a delight to show Her Majesty how the Olympic Park site has continued to develop since winning the Bid,” he said. The Queen also met with workers at the nearby construction site for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL), which will provide the framework for a dedicated high speed shuttle service to the Park for the 2012 Olympic Games. “The Channel Tunnel Rail Link will provide the infrastructure for the Olympic Javelin service which will transport Olympic spectators from central London to the Olympic Park in less than 7 minutes, making this one of the most accessible Olympic Park sites ever designed for Olympic host city residents and visitors,” said Keith Mills, deputy Chairman of the London Olympic Organising Committee, who greeted Her Majesty at the rail site.  “The venues in the Olympic Park will provide much needed new sporting facilities for young people in London as well as for elite athletes and help  grow participation in Olympic sport for future generations,” said Coe, who also accompanied the Queen on the school visit.

A Kenyan wins $1.9 million in a US lottery

Lottery winner Moses Bittok, daughter Mindy and wife Leonida

A West Des Moines man is now living a unique version of the American dream. 40-year-old Kenyan native Moses Bittok came to America in 1989 to go to school in Minnesota. He graduated and eventually settled in Iowa eight-and-a-half years ago after getting a job at the Mitchellville prison. Last Friday morning Bittok wrapped up a two-year process to gain his U.S. citizenship -- being sworn in as a new American at 9:30. Later that evening he stopped to check the numbers on a Hot Lotto ticket he purchased for the Wednesday drawing. He says the checked the ticket and got a receipt that said they'd won and had to go to the lottery headquarters to collect their prize. He says he then asked the attendant for the winning numbers and found out they'd won the jack pot. The ticket was a winner worth nearly one-point-nine-million dollars ($1.9 million). He says, "It's almost like shock at first, you know, you don't believe it, you know. But, I'm glad we won." Bittok says he bought the winning ticket at a West Des Moines Hy-Vee store where he works part-time. He says it was just the luck of the moment that he bought the ticket. He says deciding he should stop and fill up his before gas prices went up in the wake of Hurricane Rita, and he just happened to buy the ticket. Bittok says he and his wife plan to do some remodelling on their home and save some money for their four-year-old daughter's education. He says his daughter is the top priority and he doesn't want to squander the money and wants to make sure she can grow up and get a good education. Bittok chose a 25-year payout and today (Monday) picked up the first cheque of nearly 53-thousand dollars -- after taxes -- at Iowa Lottery Headquarters in Des Moines. Bittok is the fifth Iowan to win a Hot Lotto jackpot. The tickets are also sold in Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, South Dakota and West Virginia. Radio Iowa
