It is a known saying that when a child performs excellently, he is called upon to perform again. Although SACOMA is no child, the Eagle Women’s conference was the brain child of the organisation. In March 2005, at the prestigious Quality Hotel- West Ham football Club, SACOMA held what was to be the first of an annual Women’s Conference. This conference designed around the International Women’s Day, focused on enabling women from all over London, the UK and even as far as Africa, go after their dreams and soar above challenges and personal circumstances. The conference attendance was overwhelming, with a steady stream of women and men representing various organisations. The conference attracted over 200 delegates representing 50 countries.

First arrivals began as early as 3pm, when women came in for registration, refreshments and networking as well as visiting various stalls of  which Western Union Money Transfer offered free bees and  The Cana Publishing (UK) Ltd displaying various books from East Africa. Shortly after 5pm, the event kicked off with a video presentation of SACOMA. For those who were not aware, this video highlighted the many awards that SACOMA had received in its short years of serving the community and local businesses. The video also showed projects that SACOMA has been involved in such as, the Miss Kenya UK, culminating with testimonials from SACOMA clients.

After the video, Perez Ochieng CEO of SACOMA, delivered a rousing speech that inspired both men and women to rise to their feet in a standing ovation. From then on, we knew that this was an event not to be missed. With one speaker after the other energising and invigorating the crowd, with teachings, admonition, encouragement and cheering, it was a great encouragement but little surprise that there was an impromptu fund raising at the event. As delegates had heard from excellent speakers such as Florence Odongo- about rising above challenges of being a mother of three children under 5 and yet starting a business, or from Basil Mienie about Success and motivation and Mable Max about how she became a property millionaire, delegates could not wait to put into practice what they had heard. As SACOMA made a donation to the Good Health for Africa foundation, delegates became inspired to follow suit and what resulted was a heart warming show of appreciation as people dug deep into their pockets and their hearts to give freely towards the Khayega school project being supported by SACOMA. This unexpected show of appreciation for the work of Beth Romeo (founder of Good Health for Africa) resulted in £1587.40 being donated.

Many events contain heart warming messages, others challenges that inspire and invigorate, yet others fundraising opportunities but seldom, could you find a conference that found the delicate balance between the three and SACOMA did just that at this year’s Eagle Women’s Conference. The results have been outstanding, the phone has been ringing off the hook, with calls of congratulations, ladies wanting the buy the video for friends and requesting a repeat programme. As the proverb goes, this brain child has performed excellently, and has been asked to perform again.

Cannibal gets life for killings

Peter Bryan was described as 'uniquely dangerous'

A convicted killer with "a desire to cannibalise his victims" has been jailed for the "rest of his natural life" after admitting killing two men.  Peter Bryan, 34, was arrested as he prepared to eat part of one man, Brian Cherry, 43, at Mr Cherry's London flat. He went on to kill Richard Loudwell, 59, at Broadmoor special hospital in April last year, while on remand. Bryan pleaded guilty on Tuesday at the Old Bailey to two manslaughters on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Judge Giles Forrester said: "You killed on these last two occasions because it gave you a thrill and a feeling of power when you ate flesh.

Hammer killing

"The violence on each occasion was extreme and unpredictable, accompanied by bizarre and sexual overtones." Judge Forrester said the protection of the public was the most important factor and that life would mean life. In a statement released after the sentencing Mr Cherry's family called for the death penalty to be reinstated for such crimes. The prosecution accepted not guilty pleas to murder charges because of the weight of psychiatric evidence. Bryan was sent to a secure hospital after admitting beating 20-year-old shop assistant Nisha Sheth to death with a hammer as she worked in her family's clothes shop in Chelsea, south-west London, in 1993. But he was freed in 2001 after applying to a health review tribunal. He was allowed to live as a care in the community out-patient but went back to Topaz ward a week before he killed again. It was in February 2004 that he walked out of the mental health unit in Newham, east London, and killed his friend Brian Cherry. Police were called after neighbours heard screams and weapons, including a hammer, were found strewn around the flat.

'Uniquely dangerous'

Bryan was remanded to Broadmoor special hospital after appearing in court over Mr Cherry's death. Last April he attacked fellow patient Richard Loudwell, 59, who had admitted the manslaughter of 89-year-old Joan Smyth at her home in Rainham, Kent, in December 2002. Aftab Jafferjee, prosecuting, said: "The case reveals a chilling insight into the mind of a man who has literally developed an appetite for killing. "The circumstances of this defendant's offending, the inability of experts to detect when he is at his most dangerous, and his settled desire to cannibalise his victims all combine to make him uniquely dangerous." A spokesman for the East London and City Mental Health Trust said it had launched an independent inquiry into its treatment of Bryan.

Kenyatta’s House in London Declared a Monument

By Joseph Ngugi, London Friday, 11th March 2005

The late President Jomo Kenyatta’s rented house 72 years ago in London was on Friday declared a protected English Heritage monument. The unveiling of the Blue plague commemorating the residence of the late President was performed by the Minister For National Heritage, Najib Balala in the company of the leader of the Opposition, Uhuru Kenyatta and the Kenya’s High Commissioner to London, Mr Joseph Muchemi.

The Blue Plague meant that the owner of the more than 200 years-old-house will never make any internal or external alterations and repairs without a considered authorisation from the English Heritage. It will also be maintained and cared for archaeologists and historians. The English Heritage is an advisory body to the British government on historic sites. Thanking the organisation for recognising his father’s early years in London, the younger Kenyatta said that the late president was amongst a small group of African students who at the time had come to London to study and push for reforms in their respective countries. He said the leaders later returned home to continue their struggle for independence. Mr Kenyatta said that his father stayed at the house, 95 Cambridge Street, Southwest London between 1933-1937 where he concluded writing his thesis Facing Mount Kenya, while still attending lectures at the London School of Economics.

After his time at this address, Mr Kenyatta said, the late president remained in England for a further eleven years living in Manchester, London and Storrington.
“President Kenyatta’s stay in these two other places had a profound impact on his future life but is rarely documented in comparison to his later years,” Mr Kenyatta said. He thanked President Kenyatta’s then Land lady, a Mrs Hocken whom he said was very sympathetic with the struggling student whenever he was behind on his rent. Mr Balala said that by placing the house in the map of England’s most significant historic buildings and monuments was a mark of the highest esteem and honour to Kenyans.  Mr Balala said that the National Museums of Kenya will work in link and collaborate with the English Heritage in identifying potential historical areas that needed recognition. He said that Kenya needed to conserve and enhance its historic environment, broaden public access to the heritage and increase people’s understanding of the past .

"Nice to meet you Mr. Seed - I have heard about you and it is only the other day I was asking Rev. Njuguna Warui about you in Nairobi." Hon. Uhuru explained to Mr. Seed when they met at the venue

“We need to carry out these activities vigorously and rigorously in order to enhance appreciation, understanding and strengthening unity among nations,” Mr Balala said. He disclosed that the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone launched the campaign to declare the late President Kenyatta’s house a monument 20 years ago, but it was only in 2003 that the English Heritage approved the proposal. The construction of the Blue Plague, Mr Balala said, was an epochal event to honour one of the world’s truly statesmen who excelled in various fields that enhanced the well-being of human beings.
