Two sets of twins from Kenya cause double vision at HMS Raleigh

Royal Navy instructors at HMS Raleigh have been seeing double with not one, but two sets of identical twins undergoing training at the Service establishment in Torpoint, UK.

Brothers Tom and Kieran Wilson, aged 20 from Rotherham and the Cheluget twins, David and Jonah, aged 27 from Kenya, have been baffling staff and their fellow trainees with numerous cases of mistaken identity.

Tom, who is training to be a Communications Technician, was the first of the Wilson twins to join up and has just completed his eight week phase one training course to turn him from a civilian into a sailor. He was joined on the parade ground for his passing-in-parade by his brother Kieran, who as an Artificer Apprentice was with the platoon of week six trainees.

Kieran said: “We both had the idea to join the Navy and were biding our time after we left school. There have been many occasions when people have come up to me and started talking and I’ve had to say ‘sorry I don’t know who you are, you probably want my brother.’ “ Tom added: “Or they’ve accused me of being in the wrong uniform for the next lesson. It has been good though because we’ve got to know more people with us both making friends with the people in each other’s Division. After Raleigh we will both move on to HMS Collingwood for the next part of our training.”

The Cheluget twins are both training to be Stores Accountants. David joined-up in February and has already completed his phase one training course and is now part way through his professional training, known as phase two, within HMS Raleigh’s Logistics School. Despite being the twin who first expressed an interest in joining the Royal Navy, Jonah only started his training three weeks ago.

Jonah said: “David was meant to join the Army, but then jumped ship and got into the Navy before me because I picked up an injury. People keep mistaking me for him and asking why I’m back in phase one.” David said: “It felt a bit strange at first with him being in phase one and me being in phase two. We are not competitive, but he did better than me on the run.”

Both sets of twins have enjoyed seeing a very familiar face and having their brother to turn to for encouragement while they have been under training. As Kieran Wilson put it: “Why would I be homesick when I’ve got my best buddy here with me?”

Joanne Freer, founder of CottonBottoms Company.  CottonBottoms was founded in 1997 by Joanne Freer. A keen environmentalist, who, with the birth of her first child, did not want to use disposable nappies and add to the ongoing landfill dilemma, though could not find a satisfactory and completely environmentally-friendly alternative. Through research she found that 70% of working mums return to work and although prefer to use cotton nappies there was a time consuming element. CottonBottoms was therefore established both to provide environmentally-friendly nappies and a nappy laundry service whereby parents would receive a pick up and delivery service at home.  This soon developed into a nation-wide, award-winning nappy laundry service.  CottonBottoms now offers complete home-washing systems and all the vital baby accessories a new mum and dad will ever need, allowing them to stay kind to the environment and to their pocket, as well as being much healthier for their baby

Son gets life for killing parents

Brian Blackwell used his parents' credit cards

 for a spending spree

Brian Blackwell's parents hoped he would become a surgeon

A public schoolboy who admitted killing his parents before using their credit cards to fund a £30,000 spending spree has been jailed for life. Brian Blackwell, 19, stabbed his father Sydney, 72, and mother Jacqueline, 61, at their home in Melling, Merseyside, Liverpool Crown Court was told. Their bodies were found in September 2004, weeks after the attack. Blackwell admitted manslaughter with diminished responsibility. He suffers "narcissistic personality disorder". The court was told a post-mortem examination revealed his parents had been killed at their home some time in July 2004. Blackwell was arrested at the home of his girlfriend in Childwall, Liverpool, in September 2004. An only child described as an "exemplary student", he had studied A-Levels at the £7,000-a-year Liverpool College and was weeks away from starting a degree in medicine at Nottingham University. Blackwell's personality disorder meant he fantasised about unlimited success, power and brilliance. He falsely claimed he was a professional tennis player and applied for 13 credit cards in his father's name to fund his fantasies.

Decomposed bodies

After battering and stabbing his parents, he went on holiday to the US with his girlfriend Amal Saba, where his excesses included spending £2,200 on a three-night stay in the Presidential Suite of the Plaza Hotel in New York. When he returned home on 12 August he stayed with his girlfriend's parents claiming he was locked out of his house until his parents returned "from holiday". One week later, he learned he had obtained A grades in his maths, chemistry, biology and Spanish A levels and was accepted into Nottingham University. His parents' neighbours were originally not suspicious about their disappearance as the couple frequently went to Spain on holiday. But their decomposed bodies were discovered after a neighbour called at their three-bedroomed bungalow and noticed an unusual smell. Their extensive injuries led police to believe at first that they may have been shot. The couple had high expectations for their son, telling people he was destined to become "not just a doctor - a surgeon". David Steer QC, prosecuting, said there was nothing to indicate that he had premeditated the killings. He told the court that sufferers of narcissistic personality disorder typically flew into a rage if their fantasy world was challenged or threatened.

Pathological disorder

He said the killings could have been linked to the trip he was planning with his girlfriend. Mr Steer said Blackwell's rage may have been prompted by his parents discovering his travel plans and thwarting them. He described Blackwell as "a highly abnormal young man". "It is also a diagnosis that is very rarely used for someone as young as Brian Blackwell," said Mr Steer. Speaking outside the court, Det Chf Insp Mike Keogh, of Merseyside Police said officers could "not begin to imagine the distress and pain that these terrible deaths have caused". "This has been a very tragic case involving the death of a mother and father, leaving the remaining family shattered," he said. "Throughout this investigation we have found almost overwhelming evidence of two caring parents who doted on their son Brian and had ambitions only for him to fulfil his undoubted potential."
