Kibaki orders crackdown on illicit brews
Kenya, Sep 15 – President Mwai Kibaki has directed Government administrators to deal decisively with the sale and consumption of illicit brews. Expressing concern over the sale and consumption of illicit brews in Central Kenya, President Kibaki noted that the brews have led to the loss of several lives. The President emphasised that elected leaders must also speak out on the dangers of alcoholism. “There are also laws passed by Parliament dealing with the sale and consumption of alcohol. These laws must be strictly adhered to in all parts of the country,” President Kibaki said. President Kibaki was speaking on Thursday when he officially opened this year’s Central Kenya Agricultural Society of Kenya National Show at the Kabiruini showground in Nyeri. The President, at the same time, directed the Commissioner of Police to work closely with the Ministry of Agriculture to eliminate coffee theft that has become rampant and a threat to the lives of coffee dealers. He urged farmers to increase production by adopting the recommended crop husbandry practices now that the coffee industry is profitable, saying the reforms the Government has instituted in the coffee sub-sector have yielded major gains. “As regards coffee, earnings have increased tremendously from a paltry Sh850 million in 2006 to Sh3.8 billion last year,” President Kibaki said. - CapitalFM

Call to extradite Okemo and Gichuru
Public prosecutor Patrick Kiage and Solicitor General of Jersey Howard Sharp during the hearing of the extradition proceedings against Nambale MP Chris Okemo and former Kenya Power boss Samuel Gichuru in a Nairobi court on Sept 15, 2011 Kenya must honour its obligation under the international law by handing over Nambale MP Chris Okemo and former Kenya Power boss Samuel Gichuru to Jersey for trial, a prosecutor told a court on Thursday. Public prosecutor Patrick Kiage argued that the extradition proceedings instituted by the Director of Public Prosecutions against the two were proper under the new Constitution. The Constitution, Mr Kiage argued, recognised extradition law. Mr Okemo and Mr Gichuru are wanted in the Island of Jersey for allegedly laundering Sh900 million. (Read: Jersey after my cash, says Gichuru). They also face fraud and abuse of office charges. The State has instituted extradition proceedings against them but they want trial magistrate Grace Macharia to refer the case to the High Court for constitutional interpretation. “The whole idea of extradition is to give no room of refuge for those who are accused of committing crimes,’’ said Mr Kiage. He said that there were no laws that made the country a haven for people accused of wrong doing outside the country. “Crime now is without borders,” Mr Kiage argued and urged the court to bear in mind that the matter involved a colossal amount of money, which belonged to Kenyans. - Daily Nation
Former media managing director charged with drug trafficking Former media owner Ms Linda Carole Holt was arraigned in court charged with trafficking in 6.8g of cocaine. Ms Holt, the founder and former managing director of an FM radio station appeared on Thursday before Kibera Magistrate Freda Nyakundi. Police claim she trafficked in the drugs worth Sh27,000 at Karen shopping centre in Nairobi on Tuesday. Holt was arrested at Watamu in Malindi on Wednesday and flown to Nairobi. She was booked at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Police Station on Thursday afternoon. Her lawyer argued that she had been recuperating from a nervous breakdown at Watamu for the past two months, having earlier been admitted at the Nairobi Hospital. The prosecution applied that she be held at the same police station for another five days to complete their investigation. They said her case would be consolidated with that of another suspect who had been charged on Wednesday and is set to go back to court this morning. - The Standard.

US poverty rate hits record high
The number of Americans living in poverty rose to 46.2 million last year, nearly one in six people, according to the US Census Bureau's annual report. The 2010 data shows the poverty rate at 15.1%, from 14.3% in 2009. The number of Americans without health insurance also rose slightly to 49.9 million. The poverty rate was the highest since 1983, and tied with the level in 1993. The number of Americans living below the poverty line has now risen for four years in a row. The US definition of poverty is an annual income of $22,314 (£14,129), or less for a family of four, and $11,139 for a single person. The Census Bureau data also showed that poverty among black and Hispanic people was much higher than for the overall US population last year - at 27.4% and 26.6% respectively. Outside of the poverty line, the average annual US household income fell 2.3% in 2010 to $49,445 (£31,228). Even younger Americans were also strongly affected. Twenty-two percent of those under 18 were living under the poverty line - up from from 20.7% in 2009. Reacting to the data, the Children's Leadership Council, an advocacy group, said: "The rising numbers of children living in poverty is a direct result of the choices made by political leaders who put billionaires before kids. America's children should be our top priority." Among regions, the South had the highest poverty rate at 16.9% and the highest percentage without health insurance, 19.1%. 'Nobody hiring' Mississippi had the highest share of poor people, at 22.7%, followed by Louisiana, the District of Columbia, Georgia, New Mexico and Arizona. At the other end of the scale, New Hampshire had the lowest share, at 6.6%. The slight rise in the number of people without health insurance - up by nearly one million - was mostly caused by losses of employer-provided medical cover in the weakened economy. Congress passed a health overhaul last year to deal with rising numbers of the uninsured, but the main provisions do not take effect until 2014. The figures compound a stagnant US jobs report in August, when the unemployment rate was at 9.1% for the second straight month. In Fort Washington, Maryland, mother-of-five Nekisha Brooks told of her struggle to find work since being laid off from her job at telecommunications firm AT&T several months ago. Ms Brooks told the Associated Press news agency: "I've been putting in job applications every day and calling around, from housekeeping to customer service to admin or waitresses, but nobody seems to be hiring right now."

WORD OF TODAY
Ephesians 6:16 - (Bible in Basic English)
Build up your faith! Jenga imani yako! Ephesians 6:16 says: "In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. ". A Roman soldier's shield protected him from head to toe. It was made of iron, upholstered in thick layers of fabric, and saturated in water when going to battle. Consequently the flaming arrows of the enemy fizzled on contact. Getting the idea? Paul writes, 'Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one' (NIV). Satan can't penetrate a heart that's pure, saturated in Scripture and fortified by faith. That's why Jesus told Peter, 'I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail' (Luke 22:32 NKJV). It's your faith that's under attack; it's your faith that needs to be fed and nurtured; it's your faith that sustains you in life's battles! Jesus said, 'Have faith in God' (Mark 11:22). Note, He didn't just say, 'Have faith in something bigger than yourself.' No, He said, 'Have faith in God.' If you're under attack today claim this promise: 'He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint' (Isaiah 40:29-31 NKJV). God gives each of us a 'measure of faith' (Romans 12:3 NKJV). But Jude says you must develop it by 'building yourselves up on your most holy faith' (Jude 20 NIV). Faith under attack is faith under construction. It's in the battles of life that you discover whether you have nurtured faith or neglected faith! I take this opportunity to invite you in our pray Conference Prayer every Morning from 6-7a.m. call this local number in UK Tel 02030042084 pin No.67299# and you will be able to join us for prayers. A man steals £1.3 billion (Kshs. 200 billion) from, Swiss Bank
Police in London have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with allegations of unauthorised trading which has cost Swiss banking group UBS an estimated $2bn (£1.3bn). He was detained in the early hours of Thursday and remains in custody. UBS shares fell 8% after it announced it was investigating rogue trades which would mean the bank making a loss for the third quarter of 2011. The Swiss bank said no customer accounts were affected. A spokesman for City of London Police, which is responsible for the city's financial district, said: "We can confirm we arrested a 31-year-old man at 3:30am on suspicion of fraud by abuse of position." In a letter to its 65,000 staff, UBS said: "The matter is still being investigated, but UBS's current estimate of the loss on the trades is in the range of $2bn. "It is possible that this could lead UBS to report a loss for the third quarter of 2011. No client positions were affected. "While the news is distressing, it will not change the fundamental strength of our firm. "We urge you to stay focused on your clients, who are counting on you to guide them through these uncertain times," the bank said.

Uhuru takes a big risk on ICC
Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta has taken a bold and potentially risky move, which will see him cross-examined as a witness at the International Criminal Court next week. For two days Uhuru will be cross-examined by the lawyers for the victims, representatives of the defence in the chamber, the Office of the Prosecutor, and the Pre-Trial Chamber II judges led by Justice Ekaterina Trendafilova. Uhuru, who doubles up as Finance minister, is among the six prominent Kenyans ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo wants charged with crimes against humanity. His confirmation hearing begins on September 21, alongside that of Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura and former Police Commissioner and current Postmaster General Hussein Ali. But he will be taking the witness box on Wednesday, September 28, and the following day. He will take the stand at 18.30hrs -7.30pm local time- on September 28, for questioning by his lawyers and conclude the following day after cross-examination by the prosecution, according to a schedule the ICC released on Wednesday. Lawyers The Standard talked to said although Uhuru’s move can be interpreted as an act of boldness, showing he has nothing to hide; the cross-examination can also put him in a potentially risky position. Lawyer Peter Kaluma, argued confirmation hearing was not the right stage for a suspect to take the witness box, as he risks "exposing himself". "It is not the time for this, he may shoot himself on the foot once he exposes himself to cross-examination, which is usually not controlled. He may expose himself to being confirmed. The best strategy is to say very little because the burden of proof lies with the prosecution. It is not the right move," warns Kaluma. He added that ICC process was an internationally geared process where one should not play into the hands of the prosecution. "It is not something I would advice. Once you take the witness stand, you are telling people you are ready for trial. You expose yourself to provocation by lawyers; (and) you have no control of questions. I would advise against it," he added. "He should embrace possibility of the impression being created that he does not have evidence exonerating himself. His move may be opening him up to confirmation," argued lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui. He added it would have been in Uhuru’s favour to bring independent witnesses, given that there were witnesses who allegedly gave testimony incriminating him. Another lawyer familiar with ICC proceedings, speaking under guarantee of confidentiality, warned Uhuru’s move may not have been the best unless Moreno-Ocampo does not have compelling evidence against him. ICC criminal process, Kinyanjui added, is different from the local criminal procedure, which calls for different approaches. Kinyanjui was also quick to point out there seems to be a determined approach by ICC to ensure there was a trial "whether single or the entire thread (of the six suspects)." - The Standard.
THE BIGGEST EVERY STRIKE PLANNED IN UK Unions call 'national day of action' over pensions
Unions have called on a nationwide "day of action" for 30 November, which threatens to disrupt public services across the UK. Strikes, rallies and other events will be held in protest at the government's decision to increase workers' pension contribution payments. TUC boss Brendan Barber urged ministers to "engage in a genuine spirit of seeking agreement" to end the deadlock. Chancellor George Osborne branded the strike plans "deeply irresponsible". Four unions - Unison, Unite, the GMB and the Fire Brigades' Union - are already balloting over co-ordinated industrial action. Mr Barber said 10 other unions were also looking to hold a vote on strikes. He promised 30 November would bring "the biggest trade union mobilisation for a generation".
Row breaks over Kenya Cabinet bid to change election date Kenya Cabinet decision to clear way for amendments to the Constitution on election date has drawn criticism from a key implementation commission, but Parliament appears set to effect the changes. Apart from the civil society, the Commission for Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) is also spoiling for a fight with the Cabinet over its proposal to marshal a constitutional amendment, changing the General Election date from August to December, a move that would extend the term of current Parliament. In what is likely to strain relations between CIC and the Government over implementation, the commission led by lawyer Charles Nyachae warned Kenyans against giving the Executive or the Legislature a leeway to make "unnecessary amendments meant to only advance narrow and selfish political interests." - The Standard.
Committee raised CBK rate to 7Pc
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has raised further the Central Bank Rate to seven percent from the previous 6.25 percent. The Committee says the decision was informed by the need to gradually tighten the monetary policy in order to cushion the economy from high inflation. The increase in the CBR means it is going to cost more to borrow from commercial banks. The Committee Wednesday met to assess developments in the economy with focus on reviewing the outcomes of various measures that had been taken to stabilize the market as well as analyze the direction and results of various policies. It noted that inflation, exchange rate and money market volatility continued to pose a challenge to the economy. The MPC noted that the economic situation in the US as well as the debt crisis in Europe will continue affecting the exchange rate, inflation and the economic recovery. High food and fuel prices continue to drive inflation while balance of payments pressures are also negatively impacting the exchange rate. "The latest foodstuff to give us a price shock, just when we thought we were coming to a solution with respect to food, has been sugar," said the statement by the Central Bank of Kenya and added that "Sugar has a significant weight in the Consumer Price Index -CPI basket even when assessed against the weight on maize." However, international oil prices were declining. In order to fight inflation the MPC decided to raise the CBR. In a statement, the MPC says: "The Committee decided to raise the CBR to 7 percent from its current level of 6.25 percent in order to continue to facilitate commercial banks' liquidity management. The Committee decided that the current requirement that banks maintain their Cash Reserve Ratio based on a 30 day average with a floor of 3 percent should be continued." The rise in cash reserve ration means it is going to cost more to borrow from commercial banks. Due to this high interest rates from commercial banks the number of Kenyans willing to borrow from commercial banks will reduce hence the amount of money circulating in the economy. The CBK Governor Prof Njuguna Ndung'u noted that the return to normal prices has been slower than the experience in 2009. With respect to the non-food-non-fuel index inflation which accounts for just under one third of the items surveyed by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), adding that the upward drift in inflation has registered over 7 percent adding that it is a consequence of the weakening of the Kenya Shilling and the cost push pressure due to fuel and energy costs. And owing to what the CBK terms market volatility the Monetary Policy Committee decided to raise the Central Bank Rate - CBR to 7.00 percent from its current level of 6.25 percent and in order to continue to facilitate commercial banks' liquidity management, the Committee decided that the current requirement that banks maintain their Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) based on a 30 day average with a floor of 3 percent should be continued.

Seven die after consuming fatal brew in Ruiru Seven people have died after consuming an illicit brew at Ruiru in Thika County. Ruiru District Commissioner Erastus Mbui says four died while receiving treatment at Ruiru hospital and three others at various locations. Harvard Medical School: Is sex exercise? And is it hard on the heart? Is sex exercise? And is it hard on the heart? At some time in his life, nearly every man gets exercised about sex. And as many men get older, they wonder if sex is a good form of exercise or if it’s too strenuous for the heart. These questions may sound like locker room banter, but they are actually quite important — and they now have solid scientific answers.
Treadmill vs. mattress To evaluate the cardiovascular effects of sexual activity, researchers monitored volunteers while they walked on a treadmill in the lab and during private sexual activity at home. In addition to 13 women, the volunteers included 19 men with an average age of 55. About three-quarters of the men were married, and nearly 70% had some form of cardiovascular disease; 53% were taking beta blockers. Despite their cardiac histories, the men reported exercising about four times a week, and they reported having sexual activity about six times a month on average. Researchers monitored heart rate and blood pressure during standard treadmill exercise tests and during “usual” sexual activity with a familiar partner at home. All the sex acts concluded with vaginal intercourse and male orgasm. Disappointingly perhaps, the treadmill proved more strenuous. On an intensity scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest, men evaluated treadmill exercise as 4.6 and sex as 2.7. Sex was even less strenuous for women in terms of heart rate, blood pressure, and perceived intensity of exertion.
Sex as exercise Men seem to spend more energy thinking and talking about sex than on the act itself. During sexual intercourse, a man’s heart rate rarely gets above 130 beats a minute, and his systolic blood pressure (the higher number, recorded when the heart is pumping blood) nearly always stays under 170. All in all, average sexual activity ranks as mild to moderate in terms of exercise intensity. As for oxygen consumption, it comes in at about 3.5 METS (metabolic equivalents), which is about the same as doing the foxtrot, raking leaves, or playing ping pong. Sex burns about five calories a minute; that’s four more than a man uses watching TV, but it’s about the same as walking the course to play golf. If a man can walk up two or three flights of stairs without difficulty, he should be in shape for sex. Sex as sex Raking leaves may increase a man’s oxygen consumption, but it probably won’t get his motor running. Sex, of course, is different, and the excitement and stress might well pump out extra adrenaline. Both mental excitement and physical exercise increase adrenaline levels and can trigger heart attacks and arrhythmias, abnormalities of the heart’s pumping rhythm. Can sex do the same? In theory, it can. But in practice, it’s really very uncommon, at least during conventional sex with a familiar partner. Careful studies show that fewer than one of every 100 heart attacks is related to sexual activity, and for fatal arrhythmias the rate is just one in 200. Put another way, for a healthy 50-year-old man, the risk of having a heart attack in any given hour is about one in a million; sex doubles the risk, but it’s still just two in a million. For men with heart disease, the risk is 10 times higher — but even for them, the chance of suffering a heart attack during sex is just 20 in a million. Those are pretty good odds.
How about Viagra? Until recently, human biology has provided unintentional (and perhaps unwanted) protection for men with heart disease. That’s because many of the things that cause heart disease, such as smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and abnormal cholesterol levels, also cause erectile dysfunction. The common link is atherosclerosis, which can damage arteries in the penis as well as in the heart. Sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), and tadalafil (Cialis) have changed that. About 70% of men with erectile dysfunction (ED) respond to the ED pills well enough to enable sexual intercourse. Sex may be safe for most men with heart disease, but are ED pills a safe way to have sex? For men with stable coronary artery disease and well-controlled hypertension, the answer is yes — with one very, very important qualification. Men who are taking nitrate medications in any form cannot use ED pills. This restriction covers all preparations of nitroglycerin, including long-acting nitrates; nitroglycerin sprays, patches, and pastes; and amyl nitrate. Fortunately, other treatments for erectile function are safe for men with heart disease, even if they are using nitrates.
Safe sex Sex is a normal part of human life. For all men, whether they have heart disease or not, the best way to keep sex safe is to stay in shape by avoiding tobacco, exercising regularly, eating a good diet, staying lean, and avoiding too much (or too little) alcohol. Needless to say, men should not initiate sexual activity if they are not feeling well, and men who experience possible cardiac symptoms during sex should interrupt the sexual activity at once. With these simple guidelines and precautions, sex is safe for the heart — but it should be safe for the rest of the body, too. Sexually transmitted diseases pose a greater threat than sexually induced heart problems. When it comes to sex, men should use their brains as well as their hearts.

It follows a telephone call between Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Greece also reiterated that it is determined to meet all the deficit reductions plans it agreed to in exchange for its two bailouts. Concerns continue that Greece will default on its debt.

WHY IS THE KENYA GOVERNMENT IGNORING? The Kenya government should take the responsibility of protecting it's citizen. They should not put a blind of hundreds of cases which are all timed bombs. The case of Sanai fire on Monday 12th September was a timed bomb (see video below). The cases of tens of Kenyans dieing of illegal beer in Nyahururu on Tuesday 13th and again in Ruiru on Wednesday 14th September, is a case to take serious to avoid such cases happening. Why don't they give these responsibilities to the chiefs and if the chief does not meet the standard should be sucked. Again why is the Kenya government not taking the Somalia border security issue seriously. It is another timed bomb. The case of Lamu hijack is a just a tip of the iceberg. The Somalia-Kenya security issues is a thorn in the leg of the Kenya government, if they don't remove it now, they will end up cutting off the leg. - VIDEO TAKEN IN 2008

Crowd Pulls Biker From Under Burning Car The dramatic moment bystanders pulled a motorcyclist out from under a burning car has been captured on film. Brandon Wright was driving his motorcycle along a road near the Utah State University campus in the US when he was hit by a BMW. The bike hit the car's bonnet before bouncing onto the ground and the 21-year-old slid underneath it. Seconds later, both the bike and car burst into flames. A camera nearby captured a group of students and construction workers gathering together to tilt the BMW up. After a few attempts they managed to tip it onto its side and pull the young man to safety before emergency crews arrived. The onlookers also used fire extinguishers from the college campus to put out the fire. Jeff Curtis, Assistant Logan Police Chief, said: "I'm impressed that that many people would get involved, especially where there's fire involved, the possibility of explosions and everything else." Mr Wright was taken to hospital in a critical condition and the car's driver suffered minor injuries. And the motorcyclist has thanked his rescuers from his hospital bed. He told the Associated Press: "I'm just very thankful for everyone that helped me out. They saved my life."- VIDEO

Most of the businesses along the popular Thika Road Motorway will be closing soon and especially petrol stations. This is because their businesses had been promoted by the vehicle passing through this places on their transit. Unfortunately these transit vehicles will not be stopping on the motorway. The above Kasarani roundabout indicates that when you going to Safari Park Hotel the vehicle will have to go past the hotel, then come down and goes back to the hotel through the local road. The same case happens to Thome and Garden Estates residents. They will be coming out of the motorway at Allsops near JSU and then to use the local road to their area. That means Thika Motorway has pros and cons.

UK unemployment total rises sharply to 2.51 million "Clearly this is a very unwelcome set of figures. Any increase in unemployment is something we really don't want to see happen," said Employment Minister Chris Grayling. He said the data would "reinvigorate" the government's "determination" to take steps to get the economy growing and create private sector jobs. The government is looking to the private sector to offset job losses in the public sector resulting from its wide-ranging programme of spending cuts, designed to reduce the UK's debt levels. The number of people unemployed in the UK rose by 80,000 to 2.51 million in the three months to July, official figures have shown. This is the largest increase in nearly two years, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. The jobless rate now stands at 7.9%. Youth unemployment also rose sharply, by 78,000 to 973,000. The total claiming Jobseeker's Allowance rose by 20,300 in August to 1.58 million. The number of people in employment in the economy fell in the three months to July, by 69,000 to 29.17 million. Mr Grayling reiterated the government's determination to continue with its programme of cuts, as the alternative of borrowing more money was not a credible solution. Analysts said the unemployment figures reflected weak economic growth. "Today's data provide further evidence that the fading of the UK's economic recovery is having increasingly severe effects on the labour market," said Samuel Tombs at Capital Economics. "Continued rises in unemployment in the coming months seem likely." However, some argued that, given the current economic environment, the figures were not as bad as could have been expected. "The biggest surprise has been the resilience of the labour market given how weak growth has been," said Ross Walker at the Royal Bank of Scotland. The UK economy grew by 0.2% between April and June. Wages rises The total number of unemployed men rose by 39,000 to 1.45 million in the three months to July, while the number of women out of work increased by 41,000 to 1.06 million, the highest figure since the three months to April 1988. The latest figures for public sector employment show a fall of 110,000 between March and June to 6.04 million. This is the largest fall since comparable records began in 1999. The number of people employed in the private sector increased by 41,000 to 23.13 million. The ONS figures also showed that total pay in the three months to July rose by 2.8%. Excluding bonuses, pay climbed by 2.1%. This figure is watched closely as it shows wage inflation in the economy. One reason the Bank of England has given for keeping interest rates at record lows is that inflationary pressures are largely temporary and external, and are not being exacerbated by rising wages. Develop positive thinking. I put this first because I think it’s the keystone habit that will help you form the other important habits. Sure, positive thinking by itself won’t lead to success, but it certainly goes a long way to motivate you to do the other things required. Okemo, Gichuru challenge extradition case
Nambale Member of Parliament Chris Okemo says he has no case to answer before the Island of Jersey court because he had closed his bank account in Jersey in the year 2000 long before the fraud investigations were launched. Okemo and his co-accused former Kenya Power and Lightning CEO Samuel Gichuru are challenging extradition process to answer to charges of money laundering. The two want the court to dismiss the state application to have them extradited to the Island of Jersey in UK where they are wanted for money laundering. Through their lawyer Fred Ngatia the court heard that under section 7 of the constitution no proceedings should take place unless there is a written authority from the Attorney General adding that the proceeding before the court were defective. The court heard that an account belonging to Gichuru was frozen six years ago and that the extradition came as a last result after Jersey froze the account. Tobiko filed the extradition application before principal magistrate Grace Macharia. Elsewhere a city lawyer Memba Muriuki has been fined 150,000 shillings or serve 2 and a half years in jail for threatening to kill his former wife. The court ruled that the prosecution had proved beyond any reasonable doubt. Muruiki was charged that on 13th December, 2009 he used a Safaricom line to send a message to Jackline Achieng using threatening and abusive language. And the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance is yet to reply to an application made by Goldenberg suspect Kamlesh Pattni. The state added that the Director of Public Prosecutions has not been able to make a decision on Pattni's plea bargaining. The matter will be mentioned on the 16th of November.
WORD OF TODAY
2 Corinthians 4:7 - (Bible in Basic English) Honoured, but not exalted!
When God calls you to do something, it means you're called to a higher level of accountability. Jesus said, 'Unto whom much is given, of him shall much be required' (See Luke 12:48). But this is where we get it wrong. We think those who are called, are not cut from the same bolt of cloth as others. Wrong! Just because someone prays powerfully and delivers God's Word skilfully, doesn't mean they don't struggle in certain areas. Their struggles may be unseen, but they're still real. We must be careful to make the distinction between the treasure and the vessel. If you're a leader, never allow anyone to expect you to be the treasure. Keep your ego in check. Paul says: 'We have this treasure,' he didn't say we are the treasure! Let's face it, God uses people we wouldn't use, like Rahab, working the red light district of Jericho. But when she placed her faith in God He used her to win the battle of Jericho, then included her in the family of Christ. Or how about Jephthah who was born to an unwed mother, rejected by his family, and lived in a cave with his own gang of private mercenaries? God used him to deliver Israel and become the nation's youngest judge. Isn't grace amazing? God specialises in restoring broken vessels. He takes things that aren't productive - marriages that don't work, people with 'issues' - and teaches them how to be victorious and fruitful in His service. Knowing this gives us the strength and tenacity to face whatever comes, because we know that when God places His treasure within us, He prizes, protects and prospers it.

UK CPI inflation rate rises to 4.5% in August
The UK government's targeted rate of inflation rose in August, following higher prices for clothing and footwear, petrol and energy. The rate of Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rose to 4.5% from 4.4% in July, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure increased to 5.2% from 5%. The Bank of England's target rate for CPI is 2%, and it expects inflation to return to target in the next two years. The Bank argues that inflation is above target primarily because of the rise in VAT to 20% at the start of this year and past increases in global energy prices. Separate figures from the ONS showed that the UK's trade deficit in goods and services was £4.45bn in August, unchanged from July. The deficit on trade in goods was £8.92bn, while the surplus on services was £4.47bn. The ONS said clothing and footwear had provided the biggest uplift to prices, with the 3.7% monthly increase a record between July and August. Petrol and heating costs also contributed to higher overall prices. Downward pressure from transport services, particularly the cost of flying, helped to offset some of these price rises. Air fares rose by 11% on the month, but this was less than the record 16% rise seen a year earlier. Recreation, particularly computer games and games consoles, saw prices fall between July and August. Interest rates Many analysts think the rate of CPI inflation may rise further, possibly touching 5%, before falling back towards the end of the year or at the beginning of next year. "The rate is likely to move higher in coming months as utility bills continue to increase, putting further pressure on already-strained household budgets," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit. "However, inflation should start to fall by the end of the year, and drop significantly next year as those factors which have driven the rate up this year, such as January's hike in VAT from 17.5% to 20%, high oil and food prices and the depreciation of sterling all move into reverse." Jonathan Loynes at Capital Economics said: "August's consumer prices figures brought further hope that the peak in inflation is close. "We still expect inflation to be well below its 2% target at the end of next year." The price comparison website, Moneyfacts, said it was all but impossible for savers to maintain the value of their money. Its spokesperson, Sylvia Waycot, said: "Over the last year the number of savings accounts that beat inflation for basic rate taxpayers has dropped successively from 91 to a measly five today." Earlier this summer, three of the nine members of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee were voting to increase interest rates in order to combat rising prices. However, weaker economic growth in the UK and concerns about the strength of the global economic recovery meant that all nine members voted for rates to stay at a record low of 0.5% last month. Any increase in rates is seen by many as too risky given the fragile state of the economy.
Nyahururu: 12 die after consuming 'yokozuna' brew
At least twelve people met their death in Kiamaina slums of Nyahururu district after ingesting an illicit local brew. And even before the nation comes to the reality of the trail of disaster left by the Sinal fire tragedy, death has come knocking once more. The men succumbed to complications they developed after taking a new brew in the region known as Yokozuna. 9 people are still admitted at the Nyahururu and Ol kalou district hospitals where 7 of them have already gone blind. Emotions ran high at Nyahururu Hospital as scores of relatives among them young mothers grieved the death of their young husbands whom they said had stopped working since the ‘yokozuna' brew, only introduced to the region last week. It all began on Monday after two dead bodies were collected by the roadside at Kiamaina slum with foam oozing from their mouths. Reports from the Olkalou police station indicate that four others had died over night and their bodies were collected in trenches where they fell as they went home with similar symptoms. Eight other people at the slum who had been drinking together woke up complaining of stomach pains and were rushed to the Nyahururu district hospital in serious condition where four were admitted. Six of the blind are at Olkalou Hospital while one is at Nyahururu district hospital where three more other are admitted in critical condition. As residents of the slum threatened to demonstrate in the town against the brewers, Nyahururu District Commisioner Lucy Mulili ordered a crackdown on all drinking dens believed to be stocking the brew and other illicit drinks. The Administration police managed to establish a depot believed to be distributing the brew which was broken into in the absence of its owners. Speaking after confiscating over 100 cartons of the brew, the DC confirmed that the depot had no business license, health license and the brew had not been certified by the Kenya Bureau of standards. A raid on several bars in Nyahururu town enabled police to impound several cartons of Yokozuna where the plastic bottles had been pierced with a needle and dangerous concoctions added to the beer with syringes. Other brews that were confiscated for lack of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) label included Njamba, Sherehe, Tusky, Savana and Santana Ice. On his part Nyandarua police boss Jaspher Ombati said the hauls would be taken to the Government chemist for analysis. He appealed to the residents to stop taking taking adulterated brews.

NEMA approves TATU City masterplan
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has given TATU City the green light to proceed with the project following a satisfactory Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) survey on the land as per the proposed masterplan. While confirming this, NEMA's Director General, Dr.Ayub Macharia pointed out that like preceding approvals, the project had to go through rigorous environmental checks and balances to ensure that the eco-system is protected. He said, "As per mandatory requirement, TATU City had to publish in a national newspaper the call for public comment on all the aspects covered by the Strategic Environment Assessment and validated by NEMA. We are impressed by the level of professionalism and global best practice TATU City has demonstrated in developing the 10-phased masterplan." The landmark approval is NEMA's fifth SEA consent since its inception in 1999; TATU City is the first private sector project to go through an SEA survey. The SEA survey is comprehensive exercise that includes an extensive survey of the site's environment which includes the socio-economic & demographic and natural resources features. It evaluates the impact of the planned project on the environment, and reviews how project developers plan to manage potential environmental risks. Dr, Macharia added that the SEA approval now allowed TATU City to undertake the Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for the different phases of the masterplan proceed to developing the approved masterplan. TATU City Limited Chairman, Nahashon Nyagah commented on the development, saying that this was a major regulatory milestone for the project which is still on course to break ground. He said, "We anticipate beginning works on Phase One infrastructure later this year or early next year, depending on how fast we procure all the necessary regulatory approvals by other agencies". He said with the SEA approval, they can now proceed to submit our EIA surveys to NEMA ahead of groundbreaking for phase 1A which will be the city's CBD. TATU City will have 11 different land uses with residential accounting for 60% of the expected land use with the balance expected to be allocated for a techno park, institutions, commercial retail, and hospitality.

Company admits its pipelines were faulty
The Kenya Pipeline Company has acknowledged that the tragedy was a result of petrol spillage from two pipelines. Petroleum products spilled from the bypass between Nairobi-Mombasa and Nairobi-Eldoret pipelines, said KPC managing director Selest Kilinda. “Upon detection of the spillage, the Nairobi-Mombasa pipeline was shut immediately and Nairobi terminal receiving station isolated,” Mr Kilinda said. But by the time this was being done, the spillage had already flown to the water drain leading to the Mukuru-Sinai slums, he said. “The section of the pipeline was depressurised and emergency response initiated to the site after we had detected the spillage in the water drain.” The MD said a team of engineers was dispatched to the site and the storm drain was blocked to stop further spillage from flowing in. Mr Kilinda noted that KPC further dispatched both regular and Administrative Police officers to control the crowd and ensure safety of the people. - Daily Nation

Kenyan leaders united in grief
President Mwai Kibaki has sent a message of condolence to the families, relatives and friends of those who perished in a fire accident in Nairobi's Industrial area Monday morning. In his message, the President expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed to God to give them the courage and strength to bear the tragic loss. The President visited those admitted in Kenyatta National Hospital following the fire accident quick recovery. Meanwhile, several leaders and top government officials including Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka visited Sinai slums, to condole with families of those who perished in the fire tragedy. The leaders pledged government's support for the fire victims and survivors. Cabinet ministers Prof George Saitoti, Kiraitu Murungi, Beth Mugo and Esther Murugi visited fire survivors at KNH. The PM who also visited the injured at the Kenyatta National Hospital sent his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed his sympathy with the survivors and wished them quick recovery. Noting that the accident was the worst tragedy to occur in the history of the country in the energy sector, Raila said the government had instituted thorough investigations in the accident to determine the cause and avoid similar occurrences in future. He asked the nation to remain calm even as he pledged that the government will compensate the families of those who lost their lives. Oil casket failure The Premier, who was briefed about the tragedy at the Kenya Pipeline offices in industrial area, said the possible cause of the fire was a failure of a casket that caused the oil to leak into the drainage igniting the fire. Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka appealed to Kenyans to be calm saying investigations into the fire have been launched. He said it was not time to blame anyone for the tragedy and urged Kenyans to support the affected families. Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta urged leaders to feel a collective sense of responsibility adding that he was determined to do whatever he can to meet the needs of those affected. "We have heard of lives that were lost, we have seen people walk away injured- their lives completely changed. As Kenyans we feel a collective sense of loss and grief. As leaders we ought to feel a collective sense of responsibility," Uhuru noted. Those who visited the various hospitals where survivors are admitted called on Kenyans to step in and help. Counseling centres have been set up at the City Stadium. The Red Cross has also set up a tracing centre at Family Hope Clinic at Sinai. Families searching for loved ones can visit the Centre. Elsewhere, Kenyatta National Hospital has send out appeals for blood donation to save lives of those admitted at the hospital. The Hospital's Chief Executive Officer Richard Leresian send out the appeal saying all the 112 patients admitted at the hospital had 30 degree burns and some will require blood transfusion to save their lives. He said most of the patients had however stabilized though clinical assessment was still being undertaken together with treatment.

Kenyan police hunting for kidnapped Briton
Police in Kenya are hunting a gang who killed a British man and kidnapped his wife at a resort in Lamu. The couple were staying at the luxury Kiwayu Safari Village, north of Lamu Island, when the armed men attacked. Kenyan police said the motive was unknown, but they were treating it as a "bandit attack". The British Foreign Office, which has not yet named the couple, called for the release of the woman, who is said to have been taken away by speedboat. A spokesman said: "We have deployed a consular team from our High Commission in Nairobi and are offering all possible support to the family of those involved. "Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time We are working to secure the safe and swift release of the British national who has been kidnapped and ask those involved to show compassion and release the individual immediately." 'Easy entry' The website for Kiwayu Safari Village says it has "organic security protocols as well as a professional security structure which provides us with overarching security and safety 24 hours a day." It adds: "Our relationship with the local community, its fishermen and the local authorities is positive and mutually beneficial. We regularly review our security and safety to ensure it is both comprehensive and current." Police commissioner Mathew Iteere said the couple had arrived at the resort on Saturday after visiting Kenya's Masai Mara reserve and were the resort's only guests, staying in a cottage. Speaking at a news conference, Mr Iteere said: "They do not have doors, those cottages. They are using the cloth as the doors. So I think they gained entry so easily and it was only one shot. "Maybe they wanted to take the two and he [the husband] resisted and that's why he was shot." High alert There was no evidence to suggest the attackers were from Somalia nor that Islamist group al-Shabab, which has links to al-Qaeda, was involved, he said. Kenyan officials said a police officer had seen six men taking away a woman in a speed boat. The Foreign Office continues to advise against all but essential travel to within 30km (18 miles) of Kenya's border with Somalia. There have been previous attacks by Somali militia into Kenya, it says. Kenyan police said they had been on high alert in many areas of the country on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the US. Mr Iteere said reinforcements had been sent to the north-east and coastal provinces, including to provide more roadblocks. "We are going to continue [these measures], not just because of this incident, we had done it because of that anniversary of September 11," he said.

The second stage of the Tour of Britain has been cancelled for safety reasons due to high winds across the competition route in Cumbria and Lancashire. Warnings have been issued across the north to expect winds of up to 70mph and heavy rain. Tour of Britain riders are instead participating in an exhibition lap around Kendal, Cumbria, before reconvening on Tuesday morning for the third stage of the race in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs. "We've had to take the decision based on the advice we've had from the police and Highways that it is unsafe to run today's stage so it is being cancelled, unfortunately," a Tour spokesman said.

Briton shot dead, another kidnapped in Lamu
A British tourist was shot dead and his wife kidnapped in an attack on their cottage in Kiunga, Lamu district. The victim was with his wife on Sunday at dawn in their cottage when they were attacked, police said. Preliminary findings show the attackers wanted to kidnap the two but the man resisted prompting the fatal shooting. The gangsters took the woman and escaped towards Somalia The incident sparked a major operation along the Kenyan-Somalia border with police mounting a search both on land and using choppers. It is not clear if the incident is linked to Sunday The woman had not been rescued by Sunday evening but police were optimistic they would get her. Adoli said the couple were tourists on holiday in Lamu and dismissed claims that the attackers could be terrorists. He said no demands had been made towards the family of the victim or Kenyan government. Al-shabaab is classified as a terror group because of its link with Alqaeda. The kidnapping coincides with the marking of the 9/11 attacks and security has been tight following warnings of a possible attack. In Nairobi, anti-terror police said they were on alert following reports of a possible attack. The CIA received a warning last week that al-Qaeda may have sent attackers, some of them possibly US citizens, to bomb one of the cities. The warning was described by officials as "credible but unconfirmed". - The Standard. - VIDEO

WORD OF TODAY
Revelations 2:4 - (Bible in Basic English) 'You have left your first love.' Here are three 'R's' that work in our walk with God - and in our marriages. First: Remember. 'Remember the height from which you have fallen!' (NIV). Not the depth, but the height. Not how bad it's become, but how great it once was. Not the worst of times, but the best. Recall when just being together was the highlight of your whole day? What were you doing then that you're not doing now? Do you remember when you phoned just to hear his voice? The gifts you couldn't afford, but bought her? The love notes you slipped into his lunch? Remember opening doors for her, pulling out chairs, walking to the outside of the garden, cooking his favourite dish although you were exhausted from working late, reading '1001 Ways to be Romantic' and trying them all twice? Remember quiet candlelit dinners when you shaved again and wore her favourite perfume, the one you hated? When intimacy wasn't all about me? Our special places, times, smells, looks, songs, poems? Flowers you used to buy, 'You don't bring me flowers anymore,' and you vowed you'd never forget the flowers? 'Remember!' Remember what you did for love. You used to say "I love you more than my family." Ni wewe tu hakuna mwingine. "I can die for you...." The magic may seem to have appeared by accident, but it actually grew by action! You were the magic. What you did fuelled the romance, then you stopped doing it and the flame subsided. Kikuyu Garden of Eden
A story that goes to the heart of Kikuyu culture and tradition. The county of Murang'a hosts one of the most hallowed shrines of the whole community- Known as Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga. This is the place where the first Kikuyu man, Gikuyu and his wife Mumbi are believed to have lived. The site is often called the Kikuyu Garden of Eden and as Ferdinand Omondi reports, it still retains its serenity several centuries down the road. - VIDEO
Five arrested in 'slavery' raid
More than 200 officers have raided a caravan site to rescue a group of men allegedly being held as slaves and forced to live in squalid conditions - some for as long as 15 years. Four men and one woman, all residents of the site, were arrested on suspicion of slavery offences at the Greenacres travellers' site in Leighton Buzzard following the early-morning operation, Bedfordshire Police said. The arrests come as a result of a long-running investigation by the force which suggested 24 men were being held against their will in poor conditions at the site, and forced to work for no pay. The 24 men, all believed to be victims of slavery, were taken from the site to a medical centre. Police said they were mostly from English and eastern European backgrounds. The five people were arrested using new legislation under the Slavery and Servitude Act 2010 and are being currently held at police stations across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, police said. Dozens of police vans remained at the site, which consists of a series of gated properties set off a winding road, until late on Sunday afternoon. A few young children played in the road running through the campsite but many residents were unwilling to speak about what had taken place. Detective Chief Inspector Sean O'Neil, from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire major crime unit, said: "The men we found at the site were in a poor state of physical health and the conditions they were living in were shockingly filthy and cramped. "We believe that some of them had been living and working there in a state of virtual slavery, some for just a few weeks and others for up to 15 years. "Because of the number of victims and suspects and the size of the site, we needed the assistance of many officers from specialist units today. We are aware the operation has caused a lot of disruption to the other residents of the site and we thank them for their co-operation and understanding."
COUNCILLOR MUNYAMBU MET SISTER AFTER 40 YEARS
It’s unbelievable on how God works wonders! Councillor Munyambu of Basildon, Essex, UK was surprised last month while he was in America; he received a call from a family friend from London that his sister from one of his dad`s wife who left their home 40 years ago before Munyambu`s mum was married was seen in London. It happened after a conversation when Munyambu`s sister, Wanjiru visited her family friend in Romford, Essex and when they were having a dinner the husband to the hosting family opened Mr Seed`s website to find Cllr Munyambu`s article when he was in Canada; and from there the sweet story started. Wanjiru told the friends that Munyambu in Mr Seed`s website is a brother from her dad`s second marriage and she can proof that though never met in their live. Soon after Munyambu arrived in London a fortnight ago he traced his sister Wanjiru and invited her to Basildon for reunion and cerebrations. “It’s unbelievable”, Munyambu comments as he hugs her sister and both broke into peals of laughter for hours .What is most amazing is that both came to realise that they have lost two premolar teethes from both sides in exactly same place, both developed grey hair when they were in form one. “OUR GOD IS A GOD OF WONDERS”, Munyambu confessed. A happy and highly excited Munyambu through telephone conversation with Mr Seed prayed that Mr. Seed`s website should live forever, Amen! Munyambu contact is daniel.munyambu@yahoo.com

Tears as Kenyans suffer in slavery in Saudi Arabia
A fortnight ago, Asha Ali from Likoni, Mombasa, sent an SoS to her parents claiming something terrible was about to happen to her in Saudi Arabia. The 22-year-old, who left for The Gulf in March, said she has been extremely starved, forced to work for up to six households, and that she was about to be sold out to a slave master in Dubai. "Mama huyu baba jana aliniuliza nataka kununuliwa wala la, naogopa ataniuwa. Kama Mungu ameandika nitakufa Saudia sina cha kufanya. Mama bye," (Mum, yesterday my boss asked me if I want to be sold or not. I fear he might kill me. If it is God’s plan that I die in Saudi Arabia, there is nothing I can do. Bye mum) read one of three messages sent to her mother, Mwanaisha Mohamed. Ms Asha has not communicated since, and her fate remains unknown. When contacted by The Standard On Sunday, Yusuf Ibrahim, the Mombasa branch manager of the agency that recruited Asha, could neither explain her whereabouts nor her condition.
Inhuman treatment This is a plain illustration of the untold misery thousands of Kenyan migrant workers are facing in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other parts of the Persian Gulf under circumstances that exemplify utter modern-day slavery. It comes amid damning revelations of how deceitful recruitment agents have been helping promote this servitude. With about 40, 000 Kenyan migrants working in Saudi Arabia, and over 400 of them deported in the last four months, the personal accounts of girls still in captivity abroad are disquieting. They paint a picture of a kingdom where upon entry; most workers have no choice but to surrender their travel documents along with their human rights and dignity to employers.
The most common violations include sexual assault; overwork with no pay, torture, lack of privacy and starvation. Chilling murders sum it all, with the recent discovery of a body of a Kenyan girl locked up in a freezer adding to statistics of unexplained murders of migrants in The Gulf. Fatuma Masoud, a mother of four from Kisauni, also sent an SoS to Mombasa last weekend. She recently fell off a ladder while cleaning her boss’s home at Al Khudar, Saudi Arabia and suffered a fracture to her back. But she continues to be overworked and cannot access any medical help. "I am always locked in; eat smelly food or leftovers, one meal a day. I am a Kenyan, please help me get out of here, alert my embassy. You are my last hope," she wrote. When contacted, her employer, Hussein al Doussary, claimed to be unaware of the situation. Ms Fatuma is yet to receive any help. Most survivors make it back to Kenya with broken limbs. And although their accounts mirror scripts akin to gruesome movies, they are the reality.
Devious recruitment agents "My boss’ family locked me in at all times and forced me to work while stark naked to ensure I neither escaped nor stole anything in the house," notes a lady who recently fled Saudi Arabia, but who seeks anonymity. As this unfolds, the Government has been busy echoing human rights activists in decrying the form of slavery and admitting its helplessness in seeking a solution, raising questions regarding whom these innocent Kenyans should turn to. This maze of servitude starts with devious job recruitment agents, who have established complex international networks via which they rake in millions of shillings for shipping out unsuspecting workers. With average profits of between Sh300,000 and Sh400,000 per every person delivered, the agents have stood at nothing to entrap as many Kenyans as possible, whether voluntarily or by force. To enhance efficiency, they subcontract the recruitment phase to local brokers across the country. Salma Bakari, a seasoned negotiator for various Saudi agents in Mombasa, terms the business irresistible. "I have been receiving Sh10,000 in cash for every employee delivered while others get up to Sh20,000. At some point, the girls were so many I could get 30 of them monthly," she reveals.
Ms Salma says they traverse villages countrywide to lure girls into taking up jobs abroad. "They just give us their national identity cards and those of their parents. The agents help process passports and visas. The girls are then taken to Nairobi for a medical examination before flying out, with the agents footing the bills," she notes. She divulges that a group of 20 girls departed for The Gulf last Wednesday night while another leaves on Monday. Contrary to popular belief, majority of job-seekers who migrate to The Gulf are from middle-class income families, possess some tertiary training and do so voluntarily. Ironically, most of them play an active role, and even incur debts, trying to finance their migration. Khalid Hussein, the Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri) executive director, says about 80 per cent of the migrant workers are Muslim girls aged between 22 and 35 years. The girls are usually promised lucrative jobs as saleswomen, housekeepers, hotel attendants, drivers, waiters, and chefs.
"Most of them are usually employed and doing similar jobs locally, earning an average of Sh10,000 per month. But they find promises of jobs that fetch up to Sh80,000 irresistible, sign contracts and depart, oblivious of what awaits them," Khalid explains. He says reality dawns on the migrants once they reach Dammam in Riyadh and are packed into a warehouse that serves as a ‘slave’ market. "At this point, you must surrender your passport. You can stay here for weeks and all you get is food. The locals usually visit this warehouse to choose the persons they like and force them to serve as cleaners, nannies, cooks or gardeners. Protests of being shortchanged are futile since one has already officially agreed to be owned," Mr Khalid states. Warehouse auction Salma confides that while some agents usually take the girls directly to new employers, others take the girls to the warehouse and auction them for up to a month. Once enslaved, Khalid says majority of the women are susceptible to extreme human rights violation. But with no friends, relatives of law enforcers to help them, desperate efforts to force their own deportation always prove futile. "In a day, we receive two to three cases of enslaved Kenyans who want to return back home due to exploitation. Currently, we have 17 cases of sick women detained in Dammam awaiting deportation," notes the director, whose organisation has now opened a hotline to specifically deal with the crisis in Saudi Arabia. With slavery outlawed, it is believed the locals subtly use contracts to legitimise and camouflage this custom. For a migrant to work in Saudi Arabia or the UAE, she must first secure a visa via a sponsorship system called kafala. This is a routine practice among Gulf Cooperation Council states used to regulate residency and employment of foreign workers. Under it, expatriate workers can only enter, work, and leave member countries with the consent of their sponsor or a local employer. A worker’s salary, stay, meals, ability to work elsewhere, and even ability to return home are thus entirely at the mercy of employers.
Khalid notes that although both the sponsor and the employee can break the contract, this apparent equality is a mere veil considering that if the worker breaks her contract; she must pay the cost of her return ticket (a fee that the employer would have otherwise paid). She may also be fined or forced to pay debts to the recruitment agency, thus forcing her to continue working. Once at their workplaces, and without official documents in foreign land, migrants fall under the charge of female employers. Most Middle Eastern households often consist of extended families and this translates to gruelling work that normally includes tasks like cleaning, washing, cooking, tailoring, and taking care of children and the aged. Working hours range between 11 and 18 hours a day, with the maid obliged to work day and night. As Asha reveals, she has alongside a Philippine colleague, been working day and night for several households daily. Saudi Arabia officially banned slave trade as recently as 1962, followed by the United Arab Emirates in 1963.
The victims’ plight The following is a list of some Kenyan girls who have faced servitude in the Gulf. Carol Wangui After just three weeks of torture in Saudi Arabia, Wangui forced her deportation last Monday. She is nursing serious back injuries and has stitches following abuse by her employer. Mariam Zuberi Has complained of working under very harsh conditions and general mistreatment since flying to Saudi Arabia eight months ago. She has also never been paid and efforts by her family to bring her back home have failed. Makuu Morocha Her family has lost touch with her ever since she left Kenya. Even the agent who helped her secure employment claims not to know of her contacts and whereabouts. Bahati Ramadhan Bahati has not received a salary for the past one and a half years and neither has she been allowed to return home. She has reported being subjected to severe physical abuse. Amina Jundo Has been complaining that she is unwell and not receiving any medical treatment as well as a salary for the past six months. Binti Saidi Ceased communicating upon arrival in Saudi Arabia over a year ago. Efforts to have her agent intervene have been futile. Ushi Hussein Has complained of being very sick and extremely overworked since October last year. Her pleas to be deported have failed. Rosemay Wanjiku Has been held incommunicado in Tabouk, Jeddah ince June this year. – The Standard.

World Football - Papers: Hiddink offered £66m job
Former Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink is set to be offered £66 million to take over as manager of Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, according to the Mail on Sunday. As we reported on this very website a few days ago, the Russian club - bankrolled by billionaire investor Suelyman Kerimov - apparently offered Jose Mourinho £22m-a-year to quit Real Madrid and take the reins at the Black Sea outfit. Mourinho chose to stay with Real, who rewarded his loyalty with a new role giving him more control over transfer policy. Now, it seems that Anzhi have turned their attention to Hiddink, currently Turkey boss - and they are prepared to make him the same eye-watering offer, even knowing that they may have to wait until after Euro 2012 next summer for him to take over. Hiddink may not be the only manager about to land a new job: Martin O'Neill is linked with a sensation return to Leicester City, the club where he became a household name.
Things you wouldn't expect on a yacht
There are some things you would expect to find on a yacht. A cabin, a galley (kitchen), somewhere to sit, some navigation equipment. That sort of thing. And then there are things that you’d be pretty impressed to find in a billionaire’s mansion, let alone a boat. Like this lot...
A basketball court
A concert hall
An aquarium
A Grand Prix track
A beach
A helicopter A massive sculpture of Diane Von Furstenberg’s head A bit leftfield compared to the other features, but makes more sense when you know the yacht is owned by the fashion designer’s husband, Barry Dillon. The media mogul bought the Eos in 2007 for him and his wife, and other features include a glass staircase. While we can’t be one hundred per cent sure, we’re prepared to lay money on the fact that it’s the ONLY yacht in the world that has an enormous Von Furstenberg head in it.
FORMER UGANDAN PRESIDENT IDI AMIN DADA
His name was "His Excellency President for Life of Uganda, Field Marshal Alhaji Dr. Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE". Counterfeit phones in Kenya will be cut off Dec 31
Consumers using counterfeit mobile phone handsets have until December 31 to replace the gadgets or have them blocked. This follows a resolution passed by the Communications Commission of Kenya on Friday in consultation with mobile phone operators over the use of bogus phones in the market. The CCK had initially set a September 30 deadline but operators, citing the short period given to turn off their customers using fake phones had opposed the idea. Following the meeting, the regulator said that no new SIM cards would be allowed to operate on fake phones from September 30 while those still using them at the start of 2012 will be cut off from their network. “Use of counterfeit handsets shall be phased out of the market by the end of the year. Consumers using counterfeit mobile handsets therefore have (tentatively) up to December 31, 2011 to replace their mobile phones or risk de-activation,” Acting CCK Director General Francis Wangusi said. Attempts to curb the flow of the fakes through improved policing of the ports of entry and installation of a laboratory to vet imported ICT goods has failed to cut key supply lines in the bottom-end market. Their lower pricing has also made them popular among consumers faced with strained purchasing power. The operators had opposed the earlier deadline because it could infringe on customer rights since they thought they had made an honest purchase. Mr Wangusi said there was need for public awareness to be undertaken to sensitise consumers on the rationale behind the phasing out of counterfeit mobile handsets, the dangers associated with use of counterfeits, and the tentative deadline for deactivation of counterfeit mobile phones. “Phasing out use of counterfeit handsets shall be done in a coordinated manner to involve all stakeholders including government agencies, industry players, consumers and equipment manufacturers,” Mr Wangusi said. The regulator says there are an estimated 2.3 million fake phones in the Kenyan market and fighting counterfeits was proving to be a major challenge. The regulator will rely on the unique identify attached to the phones commonly known as the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) to pick out counterfeit gadgets. Mobile operators say genuine phones register both the IMEI code along with a caller’s number on their systems while the fake gadgets record only the caller’s details. The Anti-Counterfeit Authority says that the country loses nearly Sh3.2 billion annually through tax evasion and sale of counterfeit phones, which is emerging as a money minting machine in downtown Nairobi and across other urban centres. - CapitalFM
Average house price in UK to hit £200,000 by 2015 Last week Nationwide Building Society announced that house prices had fallen 0.6% in August, highlighting a sluggish demand and marginal rise in the number of available properties. Indeed, the lender's entire house price report was fairly restrained, suggesting that prices will be stable, or perhaps fall slightly, over the rest of the year, and highlighting some of the significant issues that the housing market still faces. So it's somewhat surprising that a rival report has predicted house prices will see double digit growth in the next four years, taking the average property price past a whopping £200,000. The latest forecast from the Centre for Economic and Business Research has predicted house prices will rise by a whopping 14% over the next four years, taking the average house price up to £200,700. Brilliantly, despite such a positive prediction, the CEBR explicitly states that "We do not expect a house price boom". So why is it so confident that prices will rise so significantly? The CEBR has revised its forecast for this year up from a fall of 1.4% to a fall of 1.3%. After this it reckons that house prices will rise gently — after all, back in May, it suggested house prices would grow by 16% over the next four years.

CCK to set call rates for mobile networks Mobile phone network provider Safaricom on Thursday hinted at an impending revision of call rates upwards citing increasing cost of operation. Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore blamed the weakening shilling and erratic supply for the increase in the cost of operations. However, analysts say Safaricom wants to maximize on the re-organization at Airtel Kenya to increase the call rates as Airtel the initiator of the glide path war is not in a position to compete anymore. Immediately after undergoing its fourth rebranding from Zain Kenya to Airtel Kenya last year, the Bharti owned company waged a price war against Safaricom in a bid to attract more subscribers to its network. This led to a significant drop in both voice and data rates. However, in the recent past, Airtel Kenya has faced internal issues that have seen employees leave or sacked. This was compounded on Monday this week by Rene Meza quitting his Chief Executive Officer post at Airtel Kenya after being appointed the Managing Director for Vodacom Tanzania. According to the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), Safaricom is the current dominant player in the voice segment with 69.9 per cent market share. Analysts believe this dominance coupled with the problems facing Airtel Kenya, which is the second largest player based on subscribers, could be the reason for Safaricom's move to contemplate revising upwards rates. Last year, CCK issued rules to govern determination of interconnect rates for fixed and mobile phone services. This saw the interconnection rate from one mobile phone provider to another drop by half from four shillings and 42 cents per minute to two shillings and 21 cents. According to CCK, the interconnection rates were expected to progressively decline by 35%, 20% and 15% annually in 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively to stand at Kshs 0.87 by 2014. This was expected to see a reduction in call rates to the benefit of subscribers. However, before the rates were revised downwards, Safaricom and Orange challenged the decision that saw the government halt implementing the drop this year. However, even as Safaricom ponders the latest hint to increase rates, CCK has been conducting a research to establish who are the dominant players in the market and devise ways of protecting consumers from high rates and increase investments in the industry to control monopolistic tendencies. This is through declaring players dominant in certain services which could result in price caps. CCK is expected to set call rates for Safaricom as a dominant player in the voice segment. So far Safaricom boasts of 16.2 million subscribers.
UK Storm Fear As Atlantic Hurricane Looms
The effects of hurricane Katia will be felt with 80mph winds set to hit parts of the country. Gales and flooding are being predicted as the storm makes its way across the Atlantic. Winds of up to 80mph are expected to be felt in large parts of Scotland on Monday, with northern England, Northern Ireland and north Wales also experiencing storms. It is thought that the high winds may coincide with high tides with the western coast of the British Isles at risk of some flooding. The gales could bring down trees, cause structural damage to buildings and disrupt transport services. Forecasters say winds will ease as the week progresses, but blustery conditions will remain across most of the country. Katia is the second major hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season. It is rated as a category four storm, where level five is the fiercest. It comes less than a month after Hurricane Irene battered the Caribbean and claimed 40 lives in America. Bermuda has issued a tropical storm watch as while Katia is expected to remain over the ocean, the outer reaches of the storm could affect the island and its 70,000 residents. The US National Hurricane Centre said the storm was moving northwest and would pass between Bermuda and the east coast of America on Wednesday and Thursday. It is then expected to move away from the coast of US, eliminating any further threat to land. A Kenyan lady has passed away in Essex, UK

Woman Dies As Car Is Hit By Fire Engine
A woman has been killed in Essex after her car was involved in a crash with a fire engine responding to an emergency call. The collision happened in Basildon as the firefighters made their way to another road crash where an 11-year-old child was trapped in a car. An Essex Police spokesman said: "We were called to a road traffic crash at 9am on Broadmayne, Basildon. "Two vehicles were involved, a fire engine and another car. There was one occupant in the car and the driver was certified dead immediately." The woman had been driving a Toyota Yaris and no one else was injured in the crash. Senior Divisional Officer Mark Wilson, who heads Essex fire service's west command, said: "We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of the woman involved in this terrible accident. "Although full and thorough investigations will be carried out by both the police and fire service, it is important to remember today that this family is suffering a tragic loss and all of our thoughts are with them. We will offer them our support in any way it is needed. "Members of the crew, although unhurt, are extremely distressed and shaken by this tragic incident. "They were responding to an emergency call to save a child trapped in another incident nearby - saving life is what they do every day so to be directly involved in an accident with such serious consequences deeply affects all of us."

Another building goes down in Ruaraka
The collapse of yet another building on Friday this time in Ruaraka indicts the City Council of Nairobi over its poor enforcement of building regulations. Although no casualties were reported, questions abound over the role of the council in enforcing construction regulations. The council is again reactive, this time warning of impromptu inspection even as it blamed politicians for derailing its effort to restore sanity in the construction sector. The council is again at it, breathing fire and threatening that all illegal buildings will be brought down and owners taken to court.A threat it has made in the past with little or no results. Two buildings have collapsed this year owing to the use of sub-standard construction materials. City hall claims their attempts to enforce existing laws are being frustrated by outside forces now warning politicians from interfering with their duties.Efforts to trace the owner of the building, an affluent business man who allegedly owns several flats in the region were futile as his phone went unanswered. Area residents have now urged to the government to enforce construction laws in the country to curb such incidents. Parliament has already concluded debate on the National construction authority bill which awaits amendments before its final passage. The bill seeks to streamline the construction industry and set up an authority to regulate construction in a bid to weed out quacks.

A two-headed piglet has been born in Nong'an County in northeast China's Liaoning Province. The unusual piglet was born as part of a litter of 12. According to 56-year-old farm owner Li Zhengjun it is the first time he has ever seen such a strange piglet. The piglet has two separate snouts but has just two ears and two eyes.
Every day I receive two messages of the day - one from USA and one from UK in my mobile. I don't know who sends them. God bless whoever sends them. This is what I received today. And be not drunk with wine Ephesians 5:18-21 18And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
At least 163 die as Zanzibar ship sinks
At least 163 people have died after a heavily overloaded ferry sank off the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar with more than 500 people onboard. More than 100 people are still missing, but 325 survivors have been rescued, Zanzibar's emergencies minister said. The MV Spice Islander was travelling between Zanzibar's main island, Unguja, and Pemba, the archipelago's other main island - popular tourist destinations. The ferry was bringing people back from holiday at the end of Ramadan. The authorities are struggling to cope and have asked for foreign help. Meanwhile, President Mwai Kibaki has sent a message of condolences to the President& people of Zanzibar following the ferry tragedy. The Zanzibar government has set up a rescue centre and called up on all reserves to join the rescue effort. It has also called for support from other countries, such as South Africa and Kenya. The survivors were ferried by privately owned fast ferries and brought back to the main harbour in the historic Stone Town, Zanzibar police commissioner Mussar Hamis said. Bodies are being washed up on the shore. So far 100 have been recovered so far, says the BBC's Ali Saleh in Zanzibar. Thousands of relatives are waiting for news of loved ones who may have been on ferry, our reporter says. A truck takes away a survivor on a stretcher with a drip from the gates at Zanzibar ferry port Mohammed Aboud, Zanzibar's state minister for emergencies, said 259 survivors had been rescued, but 40 of those were seriously injured. Holding on Catherine Purvis, a British tourist in Zanzibar who waiting for a ferry to take her to the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, says she saw lots of bodies being brought out of the water. "I'm standing at the port in Zanzibar with about 10 other British and American tourists. "Our ferry has been delayed as they're using all ferries to rescue the people from the ship. "People are being carried across in front of us on a drip. There are lots of body bags." Local helicopter pilot Captain Neels van Eijk flew over the disaster area. "We found the survivors holding onto mattresses and fridges and anything that could float. It's hard to tell the exact numbers, but I'd say there were more than 200 survivors in the water and some bodies too," he told the BBC. "By then, there were a few boats that had made their way out. They were looking for survivors, but although the sea wasn't so rough, the waves were high so it was difficult for them to spot them. "We flew to the boats and guided them to the survivors so that they could pick them up. There were also quite a few bodies in the water. "The ferry left Unguja at around 21:00 (19:00 GMT) and is said to have sank at around 01:00 (23:00 GMT). It was heavily overloaded and some passengers refused to board as a result, survivor Abdullah Saied is quoted as saying by the AP news agency.
FORMER MP PASSES AWAY IN KENYA
Relatives of former MP Archbishop Stephen Ondiek gather at his Gigiri home after learning of his death on September 10, 2011. Former Ugenya Member of Parliament Archbishop Stephen Ondiek has died. Archbishop Ondiek is said to have complained Friday about his deteriorating ill health and fatigue before he was rushed to Nairobi Hospital. According to the former minister's wife, Mrs Concilia Ondiek, the former legislator was admitted to the hospital before he passed on early Saturday while undergoing treatment. Doctors attributed his death to a heart attack. His eldest daughter Milka Ondiek said the former MP had been rushed to the hospital last Monday. “He was in good health all along but suddenly; he fell ill and was rushed to the hospital where he was admitted and was taken to the High Dependency Unit by Wednesday after his health condition did not improve,” said Ms Ondiek. “His condition worsened further and he was quickly transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where as fate would have it, he unfortunately passed on early Saturday,” she said as friends and relatives trooped to their home to condole them. Fighting back tears, she described his father’s death as a huge blow not only to his family, his former constituents but also the country at large. - Daily Nation.

Who holds the largest gold reserves?
Gold - the chemical element Au with atomic number 79 - "has never been worth zero". King Tutankhamen and the Incas understood the value and scarcity of gold and used it as a symbol of wealth and power. Nothing has changed since. Between 1816 and 1931, the pound was linked to the value of gold, so £1 would always be worth 7.3g of 22-carat gold. That much gold would be worth more than £230 today. Other countries — including the US, France and Germany — also linked their currencies to the price of gold (meaning, for example, £1 would always buy you exactly $4.85 while both were linked to gold) with the last direct link between gold and a currency (in Switzerland) abandoned in 2000. But while the gold standard has been removed, the metal is still stockpiled around the world. Here's a look at the 10 largest gold reserves on the planet — along with where the UK ranks — according to the World Gold Council report in August 2011. 1. United States - 8,133.5 tonnes While the US permanently abandoned the gold standard in 1971, it has the largest holdings of any single country by a wide margin. While most of the gold is held at Fort Knox in Kentucky, gold is also held by the US Mints in Philadelphia and Denver and several other locations. 2. Germany - 3,401.0 tonnes Germany's central bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank in Frankfurt, is the manager of the country's reserves. However, reports have surfaced that the bulk of Germany's gold is in the physical custody of the New York Federal Reserve. Two years ago, international journalist Max Keiser received an acknowledgment of these holdings in the US directly from the Bundesbank. 3. International Monetary Fund (IMF) - 2,846.7 tonnes The IMF overseas the economic activity of its 187 member countries around the globe. While its gold policies have changed over time, the reserves are intended to aid national economies and stabilise international markets. Depending on market conditions, it will buy or sell portions of its reserves in support of specific economic initiatives. 4. Italy - 2,451.8 tonnes Italy's reserves are held and managed by the Banca D'Italia. Italy is one of the PIIGS nations (along with Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain), all of which are suffering financial woes that threaten the entire eurozone, but still holds £90 billion worth of gold. 5. France - 2,435.4 tonnes The Banque de France is the central depository for France's gold reserves. France itself was in-part responsible for ending the US dollar's link to gold. After World War II, the Bretton Woods Agreement established a standard that pegged the dollar at the gold exchange rate of $35 an ounce. French President Charles de Gaulle reduced French dollar reserves by exchanging them for gold from Fort Knox. As a result of this action and other economic considerations, US President Richard Nixon ended the convertibility of dollars to gold in 1971. 6. China - 1,054.1 tonnes While the world's most populous country is sixth on the list of total holdings, gold accounts for only 1.6% of China's foreign reserves. China is the world's largest producer of gold and can buy gold from its own mines without reporting those transactions publicly. It has reasons to buy gold off the open market since open market transactions would push the price even higher and devalue its US Treasury holdings. China was also one of the major buyers when the UK sold off 395 tonnes of its gold reserves in 1999. The Wall Street Journal has reported that China dramatically increased its gold purchases in response to inflation fears. Because of possible stealth transactions, China's total gold holdings and the prices it pays are uncertain. 7. Switzerland - 1,040.1 tonnes Switzerland's seventh place rank on this list is notable considering its economy is the 38th largest and its population is the 95th largest in the world. The Swiss National Bank is charged with managing the gold reserves and the country's monetary policy. 8. Russia - 775.2 tonnes Russia's gold reserves are in the custody of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. The country has been on a buying spree, increasing its holdings by 21% in 2009 as it opened several new mines and another 24% in 2010. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Russia plans to buy an additional 90 tonnes per year to replenish its reserves. 9. Japan - 765.2 tonnes Gold accounts for only 3.3% of Japan's total foreign reserves which are managed by the Bank of Japan. 10. Netherlands - 615.5 tonnes The gold reserves and national finances are managed by the Netherland Bank. The UK - 310.3 tonnes Currently the UK has the 17th largest gold reserves in the world, but the total amount we currently stock is lower than the amount of gold we decided to sell in 1999. Seeing that the price of gold had been steadily falling for years, Gordon Brown made the decision to sell off 395 tonnes from the national reserve, at an average price of $276.6 an ounce, and invest the money elsewhere. It turned out to be a bad call, to say the least, with the gold price consistently rising since then and traders even referring to the generational low in the gold price as the "Brown bottom". At the time of writing, gold costs more than $1,800 an ounce, six-and-a-half times as much as when the decision to sell was made, meaning we missed out on close to $20 billion. The bottom line The biggest holders of gold are governments, central banks and international entities that currently account for 30,500 of the world's estimated 160,000 tonnes. The current rate of new production from mining is about 2,497 tonnes a year. As the price has risen, more mines have become economically feasible to open or reopen. Gold has had much attention recently as the price has risen to new highs, although it is still well below the January 1980 inflation-adjusted high of about $2,400 an ounce. Unlike money, you can't print more gold, so it's likely to continue to be a safe haven investment during uncertain economic times. High Court stops Lumumba's replacement
WORD OF TODAY
Proverbs 3:6 - (Bible in Basic English) Are you a workaholic? When you experience rejection early in life, you feel like you constantly have to 'prove' yourself, so you become a workaholic in order to gain people's acceptance. One woman writes, 'I can still hear my father yelling, telling me I'd never be any good, never amount to anything. The more he yelled, the more determined I became to prove him wrong.' Do you have voices like that in your head? It's true that you'll succeed by working hard but to experience lasting satisfaction you must know that you're fulfilling God's will for your life. When all is said and done, what matters most is knowing you're loved and accepted by God. What can top that? God measures with a different yardstick. He won't ask what kind of car you drove but how many people you gave rides to. He won't ask how many bedrooms your house has but how you raised your children and treated your family. He won't ask about the designer names in your wardrobe but who you helped to clothe. He won't ask about your salary but how much you invested into the building of His Kingdom. He won't ask about your job title but if you tried to perform with excellence and integrity. He won't ask how many friends you had but how many people you were a friend to. He won't ask what neighbourhood you lived in but if you loved your neighbour. He won't ask about your politics or the colour of your skin but about the quality of your character. So don't just work hard, work hard for the right reasons! I take this opportunity to invite you in our pray Conference Prayer every Morning from 6-7a.m. call this local number in UK Tel 02030042084 pin No.67299# and you will be able to join us for prayers. 13 more perish on Kenyan roads Nairobi, Friday 9th September, 2011 - Thirteen people have lost their lives in two separate accidents as road carnage continues to take its toll. One of the accident happened along the Meru-Embu highway claiming 8 lives while the second occurred along the Machakos -Kyumbi road. And the mangled wreck of the public service vehicle headed to Nairobi from Machakos indicated the exact magnitude of the impact claiming five lives and injuring an equal number who are now recuperating at the Machakos Level Five Hospital. The accident is said to have occurred at around 9 p.m. Wednesday and was blamed on flouting of traffic rules by the driver of the matatu. It was the same depressing story in Meru after yet another accident claimed 8 lives along the Meru-Embu highway in an accident that involved a matatu and lorry yet again. The PSV matatu is said to have lost control and swaying to the other lane, colliding head on with the lorry that was travelling towards the opposite direction. All the 8 who perished were passengers in the matatu that was travelling to Meru from Nairobi with three other passengers who were travelling in the lorry fortunate enough to escape with minor injuries. Confirming the incident, Imenti South deputy OCPD Mohammed Wako said the impact of the collision indicated that the matatu had been over speeding at the time of the accident.
NEW HOPE CHILDREN'S CENTRE DINNER INLONDON
The story of New Hope Children’s Centre started in times of need and as a matter of need; a need to answer a very grave call that unfolds till this day. This is the sad story of the unfortunate orphaned children. A story that unfolded when HIV/AIDS struck our society and perhaps for the first time our community silently observed in horror and dismay as parents perished succumbing to AIDS and leaving their young ones behind. In most cases there was no one to take care of them.
This was a frightening experience to the community at large. In the midst of all this unfolding phenomenal, one family in Uplands decided to take up arms (arms of faith) and face up to the challenge.
They opened up an orphanage center to address the issue and called it New Hope. The family of Mr. & Mrs. Chege answered the call and cries of the orphans and the community and in 2000, they started the center and lived up to the challenge to the present day.
What started on borrowed private premise, the grave sad and sorrowful story has been turned into one of success and admiration.
Today New Hope Children Centre lives to it’s name, a hope for many orphans who are a living testimony of a job well done, as they wake-up to the future with confidence and hope together with rest of the children of the worlds family.
For this reason therefore, we take the stock of the success and reflect the prospect of the future thus appreciate what has already been achieved.
The management of New Hope Children’s Centre would like to take this opportunity to appreciate and thank each and everyone for the prayers, moral and material support that the Centre enjoys from the Kenyan community in the UK . This year, we would like to introduce you to our new scheme of FRIENDS of NEW HOPE . The scheme hopes to achieve to the continuity of the Centre as it expands due to demand while fulfilling it`s obligations .
We call on all well-wishers to register with the scheme as friends and continue supporting the noble goal of building a better tomorrow. To kick start the ambitious scheme we already have volunteers on the ground to facilitate the recruitment of the scheme (we request the services of more) which will run for the next six weeks to 8th Oct 2011 where all the friends and well wishers are invited to a dinner fundraising and celebrate the achievements of New hope.
The occasion will be held at The Osterley Park Hotel , 764 Great west Road ,Isleworth Middlesex TW7 5NA . (Please note for the Dinner £30 per head applies, more info later). For more information please contact Mrs. Anne Chege on 07947883505. ICC case ends with queries on Raila, Keter
The confirmation of charges hearings against Tinderet MP Henry Kosgey, Eldoret North MP William Ruto and Radio presenter Joshua arap Sang ended on Thursday with lawyer Katwa Kigen arguing that the prosecution did conduct proper investigations since Prime Minister Raila Odinga was not a suspect. He said Mr Odinga was the head of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) whereas his client Mr Sang was not the head of the party yet he was called as suspect. “Apart from the three suspects mentioned today the only other person who is mentioned is the same person that the prosecution say they have found reason not to disbelieve, who is the Prime Minister. We submit that there has not been equality in terms of investigating the suspects, because some other suspects were accorded an opportunity to clear themselves and others were not,” he asserted. During the concluding remarks at the confirmation of charges hearings, Belgut MP Charles Keter was accused of allegedly calling Kass FM from The Hague telling people that he knew who had betrayed the suspects appearing at the confirmation of charges hearings. The legal representative of the victims Sureta Chana told the court that a Kenyan emailed her complaining that Mr Keter had made allegations that he knew the identity Mr Ocampo’s main witness, witness number Six. Ms Chana said Mr Keter went further to say, “we are aware of the traitors who are back home alluding to knowing of other prosecution witnesses from the Kalenjin community.” She said Mr Keter suggested that Prime Minister Raila Odinga housed some of the prosecution witnesses to fix Messrs Ruto, Kosgey and Sang. “He went on to assert the Kenyan Prime Minister was involved in providing accommodation and a safe haven for the so called traitors.” Mr Keter is also accused of making claims that the Party of National Unity (PNU) and human rights activists and Nandis were out to fix the three suspects. Ms Chana expressed concerns that due to high level of insecurity and lack of concern by the government for the victims of the post election violence, victims were still living in fear and that most of them were afraid of getting involved with the ICC process. She said the victims also wondered why the government had spent a lot of money to stop the ICC cases and also to send government representatives in the ongoing confirmation of charges hearings without sparing the same or similar energies on them who were most affected by the violence. ICC lead prosecutor Cynthia Tai discredited the defence evidence presented by the suspects’ lawyers saying their witnesses were inconsistent in their evidence. She said in cases where they were asked for mere clarifications, they could not recall the events of the days in question over the preparatory meetings of the violence. She also asserted that most of the witnesses presented by the defence had been implicated in the prosecution’s evidence. Ms Tai further dismissed their claims that all they did was call for peace to stop the violence accusing them of having first incited and caused violence then resulting to preaching peace to play to the public gallery. She also said allegations by the suspects that they were attending other meetings in other parts of the country and that they could not have been at the planning meetings was untrue because they used helicopters as Mr Kosgey and Mr Ruto could afford them. She said Mr Kosgey even displayed his flight schedule within the country as she said it was possible for them to have traversed the country within a short period of time. Kioko Kilukumi for the defence of Mr Ruto dismissed Mr Ocampo’s evidence saying, “the only thing you can credit Ocampo with is creativity and not investigations.” He accused him of doing ‘sloppy investigations that shocked the suspects’ as he alleged that he relied on the Waki and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights’ investigations. He further alleged Mr Ocampo did not even believe in his own evidence since he did not carry out his own investigations. Mr Kilukumi also said there was no forensic evidence to show that petrol was used to burn people at the Kiambaa church. In his summary, he said his client was a ‘sacrificial lamb’ being fought politically for his intention to vie for the presidency in 2011. Later, Katwa Kigen representing Mr Sang and Mr Kosgey’s lawyers concluded their submission discrediting the prosecution evidence and casting doubts on the prosecution witnesses. They also urged the court not to confirm their cases since they were being wrongfully being targeted. - CapitalFM

The cheapest petrol in the world!
Robert Powell takes a look at the countries with the lowest prices at the pump...When it comes to petrol, you'll struggle to find many other countries with higher prices than Britain. In fact, to be precise — if you did look, you'd find two. Yes, according to stats from Car Insurer Staveley Head, the UK has the third priciest pump rates in the world, with an average price of 135p per litre. Norway's capital, Oslo, tops the rankings with an average price of 164p per litre. But which countries have the lowest prices? Here are the top ten cheapest places to buy petrol in the world... 10. Algeria: Algiers — 20p per litre Algeria is one of the Africa's biggest oil producers turning out an average of 1.2 million barrels a day. This flood of oil has pushed down petrol prices in the country to 20p per litre, more than six times cheaper than the average pump price here in the UK. The country's petrol supplies also played a vital role in the recent battle against Colonel Gaddafi in neighbouring Libya. With petrol production in the war-torn country running dry, rebel fighters relied on smuggled fuel from Algeria to power the final push against the corrupt dictator. Hurrah! 9. Oman: Muscat — 20p per litre Oman's petrol prices also stand at just 20p per litre. Like Algeria, the Arabic state is drenched in oil, stepping up production in the last six months to 878,000 barrels every day. 8. Egypt: Cairo — 19p per litre Egypt is something of a transport hub when it comes to petrol. The Suez Canal — a vital supply line running across the east of the country — carries an estimated one million barrels of oil from the Persian Gulf every day. That's why at the peak of the country's revolution against former President Hosni Mubarak, oil prices began to climb, amid fears that the unrest would interfere with the Suez supply route. But while this oil price rise pushes up petrol costs here in the UK, the rate petrol is sold at the pump over in Egypt remains relatively low, at just 19p per litre. But with the country's government still anything but stable, it's anyone guess as to how long costs will stay this cheap. 7. Qatar: Doha — 15p per litre Prior to the discovery of oil in Qatar, the small Arab emirates' economy was mainly built on fishing and pearl hunting. Now the country's national petroleum supplier accounts for 70% of the government's revenue. Recent high oil prices have made per capita income in Qatar amongst the highest across the globe while petrol prices are the seventh lowest at just 15p per litre. 6. Kuwait: Kuwait City — 14p per litre Kuwait is tenth largest oil producer in the world and its supply is thought to account for 10% of global reserves. But nevertheless, the government subsidises both public transport and petrol bringing prices down to just 14p per litre. 5. Bahrain: Manama — 13p per litre Compared with its Middle-Eastern neighbours, Bahrain has fairly limited oil supplies. However 60% of the country's economy is still rooted in petroleum refining, which has grown strongly over the last ten years. The country is at fifth in the rankings with an average petrol price of just 13p per litre. 4. Turkmenistan: Ashgabat — 12p per litre The UK government taxes petrol to the high-heaven, while in Turkmenistan they give it away — literally. Every driver in the Turkic state is entitled to 120 litres of petrol for free every month. If they exceed this, the pump price is only 12p per litre. 3. Libya: Tripoli — 9p per litre As I mentioned earlier, petrol supplies in Libya have dried up recently owing to the closure of several oil plants in the midst of unrest in the country. But when pumping at its prime level, the country is the ninth largest oil producer with an average petrol price of just 9p per litre. 2. Saudi Arabia: Riyadh — 8p per litre Saudi Arabia is the largest exporter of petroleum in the world. Domestically fuel prices sit at around 8p per litre. Yet only half of the population can take advantage of these low rates; as women in Saudi Arabia are banned from driving due to a religious fatwa (Islamic law) imposed by conservative Muslim clerics. 1. Venezuela: Caracas — 2/3p per litre Yes, to get hold of the cheapest petrol in the world, you'll have to travel all the way to the South American country of Venezuela. Petrol is just 2-3p per litre in the socialist republic — that's around 54 times cheaper than prices here in the UK. So if you have a 70 litre fuel tank in your car, you could fill it up in Venezuela for around £1.50. While In Britain it would cost you a whopping £95. Prices are kept low thanks to subsidies from the country's left-wing government. A matter of context Now, before you all start weeping at the prospect of 2p per litre petrol, it's worth remembering that these insanely low rates almost always come at some cost. Take Venezuela. Yes, the country may have outrageously low petrol prices. But vast numbers of its residents live in poverty - the UN calculates 30% of the population live on less than $2 a day. As The Guardian's South America correspondent Rory Carroll points out, some analysts place the overall cost to economy of maintaining such low petrol prices (through subsidies and loss of taxation) at around £13bn. That's more than double the education and health budgets. But this doesn't mean that the cost of petrol isn't unfairly high in this country, especially when you consider that the UK is actually amongst the top 20 oil producing countries in the world. Your cheapest petrol Where in the world — and the UK - have you found the cheapest petrol prices? Are you surprised the USA isn't featured in this list?
Tax row: Parliament hires lawyers for MPs Members of Parliament will now have to battle the controversial taxation issue in court. This follows a court petition by a lobby group led by Rev Timothy Njoya seeking to have MPs pay taxes on their allowances.National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende says parliament has hired legal counsel to defend all MPs including ex officio members in the case which sues 204 MPs, the Attorney General, the Finance Minister, Head of Public service and the clerk of the national assembly. He however said the MPs are at liberty to independently seek legal counsel. The matter came up following concerns raised by Garsen MP Danson Mungatana who had sought to know from the speaker why the court had served each individual MP with summons by way of advertisements in the public dailies and not the Parliamentary Service Commission, the MPs employer. He expressed fears that adverse orders could be made against individual MPs following the petition. The case comes up for hearing Thursday. Rev Timothy Njoya has filed the case under a certificate of urgency at the high court. The issue of taxation on MPs allowances has been a subject of controversy that has seen MPs insist the provision in the constitution requiring all Kenyans to pay taxes on salaries and allowances exempts them and will only take effect in the 11th parliament. There have been reports that the ministry of finance has entered into a deal with the MPs to cushion them from the taxation by borrowing into the contingency funds.

UK interest rates stay on hold at 0.5% UK interest rates have been held at a record low of 0.5% by the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). Concerns about the strength of the economic recovery meant economists had expected rates to remain unchanged. The Bank also said it would not be extending its £200bn programme of quantitative easing. Earlier, Bank figures showed that savers have missed out on £43bn due to low interest rates. However, mortgage borrowers have gained £51bn.

Newham Council Tax and Benefits service moves to one location Newham Council’s Council Tax and Benefits service will move to one location at Newham Dockside in Beckton next Tuesday. It is part of the moves the authority are making to transform the way it delivers services to residents. As part of their Customer Access Strategy, the Council is looking at everything it does to ensure it delivers the most efficient and cost-effective services for residents. As part of these changes, Newham’s Council Tax and Benefits service moves out of Local Services Centres (LSCs) into a single location at Newham Dockside in Beckton. From Tuesday August 30, residents can no longer get their enquiry dealt with at local service centres. Residents will still be able to speak to a specialist face-to-face by booking an appointment through Newham’s Contact Centre. It means residents should no longer face lengthy queues while waiting to be seen but will be able to turn up at their appointed time and be seen straight away. The reorganisation of Council Tax and Benefits, of which the move to Newham Dockside is central part, will save the council around £1.4 million over three years. Offering appointments from a single location and enabling residents to access services more easily online and over the telephone means the council will be able to provide an improved service. This will allow them to spend money on protecting frontline services in the wake of severe central government cuts. Residents do not need to make an appointment to deal with all Council Tax and Benefits enquiries. Paying bills, applying for discounts and exemptions, checking entitlements to housing or Council Tax benefits can all be done online without having to see someone in person. Go to www.newham.gov.uk/counciltax or call (020) 8430 2000. For more information about all the changes taking place, please speak to a member of staff at your nearest LSC or visit www.newham.gov.uk/counciltax. Preparing to move or retire abroad |
