Analysis: World economy counts cost of euro zone dithering
London (Reuters)- From credit bottlenecks in eastern Europe to slower growth in China, delays in tackling the euro zone's debt crisis are causing ever-greater economic and financial damage well beyond the borders of the 17-nation bloc. As politicians dither over how to share the costs of cleaning up the mess and preventing a recurrence, concern is mounting among policy advisers and academics that Europe could be condemned to several years of sluggish growth as excess debts are gradually worked off. And wrangling over how to pay for decades of debt accumulation is not limited to Europe. As Francesco Garzarelli of Goldman Sachs has noted, the political stalemate over how to reduce the U.S. budget deficit is another example of the difficulties advanced economies face in reforming the 'social contract' against a background of repairs to overstretched private sector balance sheets.
Soldier dies, four wounded in Mandera explosion

A soldier has died after a Kenyan Defence Forces vehicle was blown up by a landmine in Mandera near the Somalia border. Four of his colleagues are nursing serious injuries in a Garissa hospital. At the same time, the KDF has destroyed two Al-Shabaab camps in Wamaitho and Kisima near Badade town after launching airstrikes in the ongoing operation linda nchi. The operation linda nchi continues making strides inside Al-shabaab territory and the soldiers continue sending home success stories from Somalia. However at around 7am on Thursday 24th November, 2011, 13 KDF troops on board a service truck drove over a planted Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while on patrol in the general area of Mlima Fisi in Mandera. Following this incident, 5 KDF soldiers were seriously injured and were airlifted to Garissa for treatment, one of them succumbed to his injuries. Military spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir confirmed the incident in a statement to newsrooms. According to Chirchir, KDF airstrikes successfully destroyed two Al Shabaab camps on Tuesday, Wamaitho and Kisima near the town of Badade. The battle damage assessment is yet to be released. Elsewhere speaking in Naivasha, Mandera central Mp Abdi Kadir Mohammed has condemned the incident while wishing the injured officers quick recovery. Abdikadir urged the government to protect the people of Mandera saying they have also suffered under the militia
Charity worker Peter Tyrer dies in a road accident in Kenya

The head of the Oxfordshire-based African Children’s Fund has been killed while on a charity mission to Kenya. Sixty-four-year-old Peter Tyrer died in a head-on car crash in the capital Nairobi on Friday 18th November, 2011. Last night his wife Dee and daughter Becky, 22, paid tribute at their home in Cow Lane, Longworth, and said they hoped to set up a trust in his name to continue his work.
African Children’s Fund, which has shops in Witney, Faringdon, Grove and Lechlade, helps youngsters in six schools in Kenya, three schools in Zimbabwe, and a nursery in Tanzania. It also helps refugees in Uganda. Mr Tyrer was also treasurer of Abingdon Chamber of Commerce and chairman of governors at Longworth Primary School. Mrs Tyrer, 54, said: “His main raison d’etre was to help the poor and his work in Africa was really important to him. “He was very kind and he managed to touch lots of people’s lives. He was gregarious and would talk to lots of people and help where needed.” She said he loved spending time in Africa and visited the continent at least three times a year, adding: “It was the people that mattered not the surroundings.”
Becky added: “He filled the room and in an awkward situation he would always make a joke.” Mr Tyrer, a former teacher, was also vice chairman of the Wantage Liberal Democrats and had worked as a fundraising director for Oxfam. Former chamber of commerce member Terry Boswell said: “He was a lovely guy with a big heart. He was very caring, very devoted to his calling of helping those in need in Africa. “There will be a huge hole that will be hard, if not impossible, to fill.” Chamber president Paul Townsend added: “It is absolutely terrible. He was out there trying to do some good.” Longworth Primary School headteacher Janice Peacock said Mr Tyrer was passionate about everything he did. She said: “He will be very sorely missed. It is an absolute tragedy. And as a school we are struggling to take the news in as he was a larger than life character. “He spent his life trying to make things better and he did.” Leader of the Vale Lib Dems Richard Webber added: “He was a real community man.” The couple also have a son, Adam, 20.

CHAOS AT MOMBASA PORT

There is chaos at the Port of Mombasa, Kenya after the government increased the clearance duty at the port by 100 per cent. This was after the depreciation of the Kenya shillings. The problem of the shilling had something do with the high demand from importers. Following the increase, many businessmen have stopped to trade explaining that they cannot be able to make any profit with this kind of high tax. Hardly hurt are the mitumba (2nd hand clothes) traders in London who have temporally halted their trading. "We cannot be able to make profits Mr. Seed, imagine the tax of a container for mitumba has gone up from KShs. 1.2 million to Kshs. 2.4 million. We cannot be able to do this business and we have to wait for the situation to improve. Car importers are also hard hit and the port is almost grounded. Over 90 mitumba containers are being held at the port and there is a big shortage of mitumba in Gikomba. The tax has been raised for all the goods. If the situation does not improve in time, there will be no space for containers at the port.

There was drama along Koinange street Nairobi when a tourist was caught up in a payment dispute with suspected commercial sex workers. Two ladies accosted the man demanding payment attracting crowd of people who were at the time going to work. The man had to part with 30,000 shillings but it was all taken by members of the public who beat up the ladies for embarrassing visitors.

Illegal constructions along Jogoo road will be demolished – Bett
Roads Minister Franklin Bett has given a warning to all property owners encroaching government land along Jogoo road of impending demolition of such structures. Responding to a question by Makadara MP Gideon Mbuvi, who asked if the minister would compensate people whose buildings would be brought down to expand Jogoo road, Mr Bett said there would be no compensation for people occupying road reserves. Mr Bett said all buildings marked with the symbol X, would be brought down for purposes of road construction. The minister declined to commit the government to compensate property owners for loss of their properties once demolitions take place. Answering a different question by Garsen MP Danson Mungatana regarding easing traffic jams and saving Kenyans billions of shillings lost in the jams, Bett said his ministry was inadequately funded and could not afford to build roads for diversion of traffic. While thanking the House for approving funds for his ministry, Bett said his ministry only receives 20 per cent of the funds requested from the Treasury. This he said was inadequate thus the inconveniences caused to motorists when a road undergoes expansion, as is the ongoing case with many major roads in Nairobi - The Standard.

MPesa goes Global-Virgin Atlantic/British Airways now Accept it

Back in 2007, a simple mobile money transfer service ‘Mpesa’ was introduced in Kenya on a trial basis with little knowledge that later on, Mpesa would culminate into a solid credible money transfer option accessible by the majority from their mobile phones. Warning over hidden paracetamol overdose danger
Repeatedly taking slightly too much can be fatal

Repeatedly taking slightly too much paracetamol over time can lead to an overdose that is difficult to spot, but puts the person in danger of dying, researchers have warned. Paracetamol is a widely used painkiller, and is easily available over the counter in pharmacies, supermarkets and other outlets. If a person takes a large amount at one time it can be dangerous - if not fatal - and medical workers are trained to spot the symptoms of such overdoses, which are a common form of attempted suicide. But now researchers have found that people who continuously take slightly too much of the drug on each occasion could be putting themselves at risk without showing any of the standard symptoms of a paracetamol overdose. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Liver Transplantation Unit looked at over 650 cases of patient admissions with paracetamol induced liver damage to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh over a 16 year period.
Of these, over 160 had taken a so-called "staggered" overdose, usually to relieve a range of common aches and pains, such as headaches, toothaches or muscular pains. Study leader Dr Kenneth Simpson said that in such cases, "they haven't taken the sort of single-moment, one-off massive overdoses taken by people who try to commit suicide, but over time the damage builds up, and the effect can be fatal." "On admission, these staggered overdose patients were more likely to have liver and brain problems, require kidney dialysis or help with breathing and were at a greater risk of dying than people who had taken single overdoses" he added. For emergency workers the problem is that they have been trained to asses the patient's condition by taking a blood sample and finding out how much paracetamol is present. In the case of a single overdose this is helpful, but when people have been taking too much over a period of time they may have low levels of the drug in their bloodstream even though they are at a high level of risk of kidney failure and death. "Staggered overdoses or patients presenting late after an overdose need to be closely monitored and considered for the paracetamol antidote, N-acetylcysteine, irrespective of the concentration of paracetamol in their blood," said Dr Simpson. The study, published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, calls for more work to find new ways of assessing whether a patient can be sent home, needs medical treatment to counteract the paracetamol, or needs to be considered for a liver transplant.
Okemo, Gichuru extradition case to start afresh

Special prosecutor Partrick Kiage has for the second time suffered a blow after trial magistrate Grace Macharia ruled that he should not conduct a case that Nambale legislator Chris Okemo and former KPLC boss are challenging their extradition to Jersey. Last week the High Court temporarily stopped the anti-corruption case against Tinderet Member of Parliament Henry Kosgey who had said that Kiage's appointment was not renewed after it expired arguing that he had no power to prosecute him. The court noted that Kiage, is not properly gazetted as required by the law and that he has no legal status to appear before the trial magistrate Grace Macharia . Ms Macharia also ordered that the proceedings be expunged and subsequently instructed the Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko to appoint another prosecutor. This means that the case will start afresh since Kiage was leading the team representing the state counsel. The lawyer representing the two Okemo and Gichuru had argued that Kiage term expired and was not renewed as required by the law and that he should not conduct the case. In his defence Kiage told the court that he was duly appointed as a special public prosecutor adding that he has the status to conduct the case. Okemo and Gichuru are wanted in the Island of Jersey to face 53 charges on fraud and money laundering. Elsewhere a three judge bench will rule on whether Tobiko will remain in office or not. The Kenya Youth Parliament, the petitioners in the case argue that questions that were raised over Tobiko's suitability have not been put to rest. They want the court to make a declaration that the appointment of Tobiko in light of the allegations touching on his suitability to the office is in breach of the constitution. However through state counsel the Attorney General said the constitution was not breached and the court has no jurisdiction to remove Tobiko from office.
Marende approves contentious Election Bill

The contentious Constitution of Kenya amendment Bill is admissible and will go on after all. Speaker Kenneth Marende Tuesday ruled that the bill seeking to change the election date from August to December be slated on the order paper for the first reading Wednesday afternoon. Marende addressed himself to five key issues raised by the backbench during attempts to introduce the bill through the first reading. He said although the MPs had claimed the minister cannot introduce the bill since the constitution in chapter 16 provides for the introduction of a bill by parliamentary initiative that is through an MP or popular initiative, the provision in the sixth schedule of the constitution had been suspended and the former extended to allow members of the executive to introduce a bill recognizing them as MPs. He also said the constitution is not explicit on whether public participation should be before or after publication of a bill. Owing to this, he noted that the minister was not in breach of the constitution. Marende however noted that it was critical for the minister to ensure everyone was entirely on board however expressing hope that the public will be engaged during the 90 days period preceding debate on the bill.
South Korean MP throws tear gas in parliament
A South Korean MP attempted to halt a controversial trade bill with the US by attacking his political rivals with a tear gas canister in parliament. South Korea's Grand National Party had agreed to the deal, which will increase trading between the two countries, though critics believe it will not be in South Korea's best interests. Opposition politicians filled parliament attempting to prevent the deal, as democratic MP Kim Sun-dong set off the tear gas capsule. Politicians spluttered after the attack, shielding their eyes from the chemical weapon. Kim Sun-dong was forcibly removed by security guards, shouting: "Let me go, bastards. No FTA [Free Trade Agreement]." He then faced a surging crowd of onlookers and press outside of court as he was taken away. After the parliament floor had been cleared the deal was passed after a vote of 151 to 7. The trade deal is the biggest of its kind between the two nations over the last 17 years and is expected to boost South Korean exports dramatically. - VIDEO

Kenyan runner found with severe frostbite after vanishing

spending more than two days outside in freezing weather in Alaska
A long-distance runner who spent more than two days in freezing temperatures without winter gear has had his feet amputated. Marko Cheseto, 28, is one of several Kenyan runners who competed for the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) in cross-country and track. He was seen at about 7pm in a UAA building on November 6, a Sunday night, as two snowstorms started to blanket Anchorage. His roommates reported him missing the next morning.
The disappearance prompted an intensive search which included mountain rescue teams, ski patrols and search dogs. He was found early the following Wednesday outside a hotel near the campus, wearing athletic shoes, a jacket and blue jeans but no hat or gloves. He was suffering from hypothermia and severe frostbite on his feet and hands. The hotel manager told the Anchorage Daily News that when Mr Cheseto was found, paramedics could not remove his shoes because they were frozen to his feet. Mr Cheseto's hands are expected to recover but his lower extremities were severely injured and required amputation. He is expected to remain in hospital for recovery and rehabilitation.

University police interviewed Mr Cheseto after he was found and reported he had suffered a 'personal crisis' when he disappeared. He had reportedly been depressed over the suicide of his teammate and fellow Kenyan William Ritekwiang in February. Ritekwiang, 23, was found dead in his apartment near campus with no signs of foul play. He was a second-year student and another academic All-American runner. Authorities concluded that Mr Cheseto had spent the entire time outside.

In a statement on the athletic department website, Mr Cheseto thanked volunteers and professionals who searched for him. He said: 'As some may know, I've been going through a lot of personal issues. 'While I am still recovering - both physically and emotionally - I will do my very best to give back to the community that has helped me so much and to my home country, Kenya. I sincerely apologise for any problems that I may have caused.' Mr Cheseto left the campus one day after accompanying the UAA cross-country team to the NCAA Division II West Region championships in Spokane, Washington.

Eleventh hour grace
Matthew 20:10-15 Reads: “10So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.' 13 "But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?'”
Jesus told the story of a farmer who hired day labourers: some at 6 am, some at 9 am, some at 12 noon, some at 3 pm and some at 5 pm, one hour before quitting time. Amazingly, he paid them all the same wage. When the complaints started flying, the farmer said, 'I wish to give to this last man the same as to you.' You say, 'Nobody pays a day's wage to one-hour workers.' God does. Deathbed converts and lifelong saints enter heaven by the same gate. They don't enjoy the same reward, but they're saved by the same grace. A last minute confessor receives the same grace as a lifetime servant? It doesn't seem fair. The workers in Jesus' story complained too. So the farmer explained the prerogative of ownership: 'Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me...' (Matthew 20:15 RSV). The thief on the cross proves that when you request grace with your dying breath, God answers your prayer. The Prodigal Son '...wasted his possessions...' (Luke 15:13 NKJV). The Greek word for 'wasted' pictures a farmer throwing handfuls of seed into the ground. Imagine the Prodigal Son spurning his father's kindness, going out and 'throwing it all away.' But he returned. And when he did '....his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him' (Luke 15:20 NKJV). The Father was saving the son's place. And He's saving yours too. Eleventh hour grace means that if you're able to read these words and respond, it's not too late.

Thomas Cook's £900m Debt Woes Deepen

Troubled tour operator Thomas Cook has announced it is in negotiations with banks to shore up its finances amid a growing £900m debt. It comes just a month after the company asked the bank for £100m credit to see it through the quiet winter trading period. Sky's City editor Mark Kleinman has now exclusively revealed that the company, Europe's second-biggest tour operator, ditched a £400m fundraising bid in recent days. The move would have involved asking shareholders to help secure its medium-term future. Kleinman said: "I'm told that the £400m rights issue was being worked on as recently as the weekend just gone, but that the company - sensibly I would say - decided that there was no point asking shareholders for additional capital before its syndicate of lenders had agreed to a new deal." Thomas Cook shares closed down 75%, or 30.9p lower at 10.2p, at the end of the day - making it the biggest faller in the FTSE 250 Index. Its shares were 95% lower than at the start of the year, giving it a market value of just £96m. It plans to delay publication of its annual results, which were due on Thursday. The holiday group had already issued three profits warnings this year, resulting in its chief executive Manny Fontenla-Novoa quitting in August. Kleinman has learned that Mr Fontenla-Novoa got a £1.1m payoff - higher than previously reported - which is set to be disclosed in the company's annual report, which will be published next month. Thomas Cook has declined to comment on either the rights issue or the payoff. The group has previously merged its high street travel business with the Co-operative Travel - and there were reports at the weekend that the company plans to shut 200 shops, putting 1,000 jobs at risk. Adding to the dismal year, Thomas Cook is expected to report a 31% slide in underlying profits to £191.1m.

Is Paypal really the safer, easier way to pay online?
I do a lot of my shopping online. My reason is simple: that's where the best bargains are. Typically, once I've decided what I want to buy, I use a shopbot such as Google Shopping or Kelkoo to hunt down the best price. Often this takes me to a website I've never heard of, which can make me uneasy. If it only costs me a few pence more to buy my item from a well-known retailer like Amazon instead, I'll usually do that. That way, I have peace of mind that my item will actually show up and I won't be ripped off. But is this the right approach? Especially if the website accepts payments via Paypal? After all, it's one of the safest, fastest, most secure ways to pay online - isn't it?
How does Paypal work?
Instead of sharing your payment details with an unknown retailer, if the website allows Paypal payments, you can effectively use Paypal as a middleman. So Paypal - which prides itself on being a brand you know and can trust - takes your payment and passes it on to the retailer without sharing any of your sensitive financial information. All sounds great, doesn't it? But if there's one thing I've learnt over the years working for lovemoney.com, it's this: when it comes to financial transactions, it pays to be aware of the small print.
Does Paypal actually offer extra protection?
If you pay for an item costing £100 or more using your credit card, you are protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. So if the retailer goes bust, fails to deliver the goods or the goods it supplies are not up to scratch, you have the statutory right to compensation from your credit card provider. But this statutory right does NOT apply if you pay for something on your credit card via Paypal. In this case, the very safeguard you sought - having a middleman - means you no longer have a direct, legal contract with your credit card provider. Instead, you will have to make a claim for compensation with Paypal. And that means Paypal gets to decide whether your dispute is valid. You no longer have the protection of the law. Having said that, Paypal does offer some protection under its 'Buyer Protection' scheme. It states that it will 'help you' if you didn't receive the item you paid for with Paypal or you received an item that is 'significantly not as described'. However, there are eligibility requirements you must meet:
- You must have paid the full amount in a single payment, not multiple payments, like a deposit followed by a final payment. (Under Section 75, you can put down a £1 deposit on your credit card and pay the remaining balance by another means, and still make a claim.)
- You must open a dispute within 45 days of the date you sent the payment, and follow the online dispute resolution process on the Paypal website. (You get up to six years under Section 75.)
Both of these restrictions make using Paypal worse than buying direct from the online merchant with your credit card - if the item costs more than £100. This distinction is important. If the item costs less than £100, you don't get any special statutory protection from your credit card provider. However, even then, you'd have more protection if you paid with a Visa or MasterCard debit card, rather than with Paypal. This is because your bank will allow you 120 days to make a claim after realising there's a problem with your purchase under its debit card Chargeback scheme. You can also make a claim for fraud and unauthorised use of your card under the Chargeback scheme. Unlike Section 75, there's nothing to stop you making a claim under the Chargeback scheme if you've paid with your debit card via Paypal, but it might make the process more difficult. And as some banks are notoriously rubbish at dealing with Chargeback claims, personally, I would be wary of adding a layer of complexity to the transaction.
Watch out for Paypal scams
Another thing that puts me off Paypal is the way that it can take money out of your account if it believes it has a valid reason - even if you're a victim of a scam. Basically if you sell something online and the buyer contacts Paypal and asks for their money back, Paypal could agree to refund the money without even checking with you whether you sent the goods and the buyer's claim is valid. If you've already legitimately withdrawn the cash, it could even start threatening you with debt collection proceedings. This has affected several lovemoney.com readers (including Mrs C and anamou) but it's obviously only a problem if you sell stuff online via Paypal. Finally, bear in mind that scam emails purporting to be from Paypal are prevalent on the internet. Typically you are told that you need to fill in a form/send back an email with all your financial details to update your security details. Never respond to such emails - report them to spoof@paypal.com (you can take this helpful phishing test if you're unsure whether it's a scam). Carbon monoxide poisoning: are you at risk?

Be very Careful about this Silent killer
Most of us know the risks of not fitting a smoke alarm. But how many of us take steps to prevent the silent killer in our homes – carbon monoxide? The deadly gas, which is colourless and odourless yet highly toxic, kills at least 50 people in the UK each year and sees thousands hospitalised. Yet despite the scary statistics, most households fail to take the few simple steps needed to help save lives. Only one third of us have a carbon monoxide alarm and two thirds don’t bother to get our fuel appliances, which can leak CO, regularly checked. Now, for CO Awareness Week (November 21-27), campaigners are desperate to get the message out that CO is dangerous stuff – but that a few easy measures can stop the risks. Dr Ed Walker, medical advisor to the charity Carbon Monoxide Awareness, says: “Carbon monoxide is lethal even in small amounts, yet is commonly found in homes and workplaces all over the world. “As a society we are probably less aware of its dangers than we were 50 years ago, and unless that changes people will continue to die and be severely disabled.”
So what causes CO to leak into our homes – and how can we stop it? Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as oil, paper, wood, coal or petrol are burned incompletely. If combustion appliances such as boilers, cookers and gas fires are properly installed, ventilated and regularly maintained, the risks are extremely low. But if those appliances are not fitted by a licensed expert, or kept in good working order, unsafe levels of CO can build up – putting our health at risk. When CO enters the body, it prevents blood from bringing oxygen to cells, tissues and organs. It can cause brain and heart damage and harm unborn children. As the Health and Safety Executive puts it: “You can't see it, taste it or smell it but CO can kill quickly without warning.
“Levels that do not kill can cause serious harm to health if breathed in over a long period. In extreme cases paralysis and brain damage can be caused as a result of prolonged exposure. [But] taking sensible precautions could dramatically reduce this risk.” Symptoms of poisoning are wide-ranging and can easily be confused with other illnesses. They include headaches, flushing, nausea, trembling, drowsiness, vertigo, weakness, concentration problems, irritability and severe muscle pain. But while CO poisoning may resemble food poisoning or flu, it does not cause a high temperature. Symptoms may be less severe when you are away from the source of the leak. But the longer you breathe it in, the worse those symptoms will get – with loss of consciousness possible within just two hours if there is a lot of CO in the air.
The problem, of course, is that it is hard to know whether CO is on the loose unless you have an alarm fitted to detect it in your home or place of work. Happily, alarms can cost as little as £12, don’t need to be connected to the mains and are readily available from the likes of British Gas, npower, Tesco and B&Q. Chris Thewlis, head of operations for npower, comments: “Millions of UK homes could be at risk of a CO leak. But with the help of a carbon monoxide alarm, people will be alerted to the fact that there is a problem and will be able to act. “It’s not just big leaks that can be detrimental to health: smaller leaks, which emit lower levels of carbon monoxide, can cause serious damage to your health over time.” Fitting an alarm is a quick DIY task – just make sure you pick one with an audible siren rather than a colour change indicator, and a British Standard EN 50291 mark. Other than that, it is essential to:
- Arrange for appliances to be professionally serviced once a year
- Have chimneys swept and inspected regularly to remove blockages such as birds’ nests or leaves
- Make sure the building’s ventilation openings are not blocked
- Fit an extractor fan in your kitchen
- Always use a safety mask when using chemicals that contain methylene chloride
- Do not leave petrol-fuelled lawnmowers or cars running in the garage
- Do not burn charcoal in an enclosed space, such as on an indoor barbecue
Warning signs of a potential CO leak include a yellow or orange rather than blue flame in your gas appliance, soot or yellow and brown staining around it, pilot lights that frequently blow out and increased condensation inside windows in the room where the appliance is installed. And if you do suspect CO poisoning may be blighting your home or that of a loved one, don’t hang around – seek medical attention straight away, whether from your GP or A&E. If several people in the same building develop flu-like symptoms without a temperature, and you think it could be linked to a CO leak, you should:
- Immediately stop using all cooking and heating appliances that use fuel other than electricity
- Open all of the windows
- Move away from the source of the CO gas
Lynn Griffiths, founder of the Carbon Monoxide Awareness charity, says: “Poisoning can have a devastating effect on someone’s life and the more people who are aware of the symptoms of exposure, especially at the initial stages, the more chance we have of preventing avoidable deaths or injuries.”
Tinnitus causes man to take his own life

Debilitating condition
A man is believed to have taken his own life because he could not bare to live with tinnitus, according to reports. Robert McIndoe, 52, developed the hearing condition after attending a rock concert in July. His wife, Shirley McIndoe, told a hearing at Southwark Coroner's Court that her husband had been "cross with himself" for not taking earplugs with him on the night of the concert. Mrs McIndoe said at the hearing: "When it first happened he wasn't too bothered about it because he thought it would subside, and the friend he had been with also had ringing in his ears that day. But it was a constant irritation. He didn't get a night of sleep after that." Mr McIndoe had struggled to get the support and help needed for his condition, the Court heard.
Taxi driver runs over man in fare dispute
Shocking footage shows a taxi driver using his cab “like a weapon” as he deliberately mows down his passenger after a row over the fare. A CCTV camera captured the incident in April after Bristol taxi driver Muhammed Javed, 45, dropped the passenger off after a night out. The clip that was played in court on Monday shows Mr Lloyd and friend Polly Nicalaous standing in front of the bonnet as tensions mount between them and the driver. Mr Javed then got out of his taxi and put his arm out, seemingly to stop them leaving, and is then seen to throw a punch at Mr Lloyd who blocks it with his arm, a court heard. After Mr Javed returned to the driver’s seat, Mr Lloyd attempted to take a picture of the taxi licence plate, the furious taxi driver started revving up the engine. The taxi started to crawl before hitting the accelerator and driving off at speed with the victim still on the bonnet.
Mr Lloyd managed to cling onto the bonnet before falling onto the road. What the footage doesn’t show is Mr Lloyd left bleeding on the road, suffering from head injuries and a broken hand. Bristol Crown Court was told how the pair initially agreed a £7 fare to drive to their desired destination. However, Mr Javed said it would be dependant on the meter. As soon as the meter hit £6, the pair asked to be let out. But Javed continued to drive with the couple threatening to call the police. Recorder Simon Foster said: “It’s quite plain that you deliberately used your taxi as a weapon. You drove deliberately at someone stood right in front of your vehicle. “It is in my mind extraordinary that there weren’t any more injuries caused. They could have been horrendous.” Mr Javed was jailed for six months and banned from driving for two years after admitting dangerous driving and assault causing actual bodily harm.

The Kenya government has made an urgent appeal to President Obama for the US Pentagon to provide intelligence and logistical support to the faltering month-old military operation in Somalia against the al Shabaab militia. US Administration officials are considering the request, which came through the State Department, to provide military surveillance and reconnaissance that could include imagery from Drone aircraft. Such aid would represent a significant expansion of US involvement in Somalia. The 2,000 Kenyan troops that crossed into Southern Somalia last month were quickly bogged down after seasonal rains turned local roads into thick mud, leaving the invading forces far short of key al Shabaab strongholds to the north. Some US officials favour direct support for the Kenyan operation. Counter-terrorism officials are eager to eliminate or weaken the al Shabaab, a terrorist group that has conducted lethal attacks against US allies in Africa and has vowed to expand its reach. At least two Somali Americans recruited by the al Shabaab took part in suicide bombings in Somalia, and counter-terrorism experts fear other recruits may attempt attacks in the United States. But administration officials are wary of getting drawn into another war in a Muslim country as US forces withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Memories are still fresh on the 1993 "Black Hawk Down" debacle, when the bodies of two US servicemen were dragged through the streets of Mogadishu after a mission to capture a local warlord went awry. After crossing into Somalia in mid-October, the Kenyan troops captured several border towns and advanced inland. But they have yet to take the strategic crossroads town of Afmadhow, about 80 miles inside Somalia, or the crucial port of Kismayu, about 100 miles up the Indian Ocean coast. If it secures those targets, Kenya hopes to create a military buffer zone in Southern Somalia to stem the flow of weapons and trained militants across the border. Earlier this year, Somali bandits kidnapped four foreigners in Kenya. Meanwhile, fear has gripped the residents of Ngomeni on the Kenyan coast and its neighborhood after six fishermen were kidnapped at gun point by nine heavily armed al Shabaab militias on Saturday night. It is alleged the Somalia militia gang with a powerful two-engine speedboat and armed with guns, grenade launcher, and bombs raided the village at 8pm and ordered the fishermen who were offloading their fish from their boat at the shore to lead them to Cheshale, a tourist resort town. Fearing for their lives the fishermen took the al Shabaab to the scene where it was believed they were targeting to kidnap tourists and take them to the deep sea as the boat had two ladders used to climb into a ship. Global markets down on debt fears in US and eurozone

Markets worldwide have tumbled on fears over global debt - with another impasse confirmed in the US and continuing fears over the eurozone crisis. The US Dow Jones index closed down 2.1%, and German and French indexes fell more than 3%. The US committee charged with cutting the US debt - currently at $15tn (£9.5tn) - has admitted it has failed to find a resolution. And Spain became the third eurozone member to change government. In the US, talks between Democrats and Republicans on the Congressional "super-committee" charged with finding $1.2tn (£762bn) in savings to avoid automatic deep spending cuts collapsed. Meanwhile there were reports the European Commission will discuss so-called eurobonds, in which the eurozone issues debt for all its members. European markets were also rattled by news that credit rating agency Moody's has warned that recent developments could affect France's credit rating. Moody's said the country's rating could be hit by recent rises in borrowing costs for the French government and a downturn in growth prospects. "Elevated borrowing costs persisting for an extended period would amplify the fiscal challenges the French government faces amid a deteriorating growth outlook, with negative credit implications," the agency said.

UAE backs Kenya’s efforts to stabilize Somalia

Kenya and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Monday agreed that the resolution of the Somalia conflict and stabilization of the horn of Africa nation was a key priority ahead of the reconstruction of the country. Meeting in Abu Dhabi , UAE, President Mwai Kibaki and UAE President and ruler of the Abu Dhabi , His Highness Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan underscored their joint support for post-conflict Somalia , a country that has not had a stable central government in the last 20 years. "We are following closely what is happening in Somalia and will support efforts to normalize Somalia and give hope to the country," said President Zayed. On his part President Kibaki said Kenya's current mission to Somalia was out of the desire to find a solution that could bring about lasting peace to Somalia and the region. "We need normalcy and development in Somalia . We will continue our efforts to stabilize the country and look forward to getting the help of our friends to support the reconstruction of Somalia , whose people desire peace," President Kibaki stressed. The two leaders also underscored the need for increased humanitarian assistance for the people of Somalia who have borne the suffering after many years of conflict. "Kenya is hosting close to one million of the Somali population. We must now start thinking of ways in which they can be integrated in a stable Somalia and support them in efforts to reconstruct their country," the leaders affirmed.

On bilateral relations President Zayed praised the many Kenyans currently working in UAE for their contribution to the economy of his country and welcomed a request by President Kibaki that more Kenyans be allowed to work in the Emirates. The Head of State told his host, "Your Highness, United Arab Emirates is host to over 40,000 Kenyans who reside and work in various sectors especially in services and hospitality industries and in business. In this regard, I would be pleased if our respective countries could consider initiating negotiations that could lead to mutual recognition of training curriculums. The harmonization is critical in areas such as hospitality, health and engineering as well as a visa and work permit arrangements which would more easily fulfill your skilled manpower needs. My Government is expanding training capacity to meet the United Arab Emirates demands for tailor made and adaptable courses." President Kibaki also welcomed more tourists and investors from UAE to visit and invest in Kenya , following the signing of a bilateral agreement between the two countries on the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income. The President reiterated that people of the Gulf region and from the East African Coast have had contacts spanning for many centuries which enabled them to conduct trade and share common experiences in culture, history and religion. It is against this background, President Kibaki stated, that Kenya was among the first sub-Saharan Africa countries to establish diplomatic presence in UAE.
He said, " The relations between our two countries have continued to grow from strength to strength to the extent that today, the United Arab Emirates is Kenya 's third largest trading and investment partner and the largest in the Gulf region." President Kibaki further supported and welcomed the desire by the UAE to establish a residence mission in Nairobi . He said, "Finally Your Highness, I also welcome the intention of your Government to establish a residence mission in Nairobi and look forward to receiving the credentials of your Ambassador. I also take this opportunity to extend an invitation to Your Highness to visit Kenya at the earliest possible opportunity." Earlier at his hotel of residence in Abu Dhabi , President Kibaki met and held discussions with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of United Arab Emirates Armed Forces His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The discussions focused on strengthening the already existing excellent relations between the two countries anchored on common economic, cultural and historical ties. President appreciated that UAE was hosted over 40,000 Kenyans who worked in various sectors of the economy especially in the hospitality and the services sectors.
LOVE BREWED IN A CHURCH POT

In one of her songs, Canadian singer Celine Dion says love does not ask why and she would have spoken this directly to a Kenyan nun studying in the US. After being a nun for 16 years, Beatrice Magoka went to America for further studies. The Catholic nun attended Mass and served the church near her school dutifully. In the same church, there was also a staunch Catholic man who regularly attended Mass. And since ‘love doesn’t ask why’, one day, two years ago, Magoka, 37, and American Tyrone Wright, 46, saw each other and that feeling of love was too much to ignore. But they knew it was futile as Magoka was already ‘married’ to Christ. For two years they tried to pray and discourage the ‘temptation’ but it was in vain — they had fallen in love. So last April, Magoka and Wright tied the knot, through a civil wedding. In an interview conducted mainly through phone calls and emails, Magoka talked of the great love she has for her man, whom she describes as caring, loving and the best that can be. Julie McCabe, 38, may have suffered a severe allergic reaction to a chemical in the L’Oreal Preference product. Police crackdown on fake shopping sites
More than 2,000 web shops selling fake or non-existent goods have been shut down by police. Goods purportedly from GHD, Ugg, Tiffany and Nike had been peddled by the sites, said the Metropolitan Police E-Crime Unit. It said shoppers had been tempted by low prices. The unit warned that the goods supplied were counterfeit, adding that many sites had taken payment and then not despatched any products in return. It said many of the sites had been simply set up by cyber thieves to harvest credit card and banking details. Police officers worked with domain registrars to identify the rogue traders and then used Nominet's powers to seize and shut down the offending domains. Detective Inspector Paul Hoare from the E-Crime Unit said many gangs registered sites in bulk solely to dupe customers. He said the campaign to close the criminal sites would continue in the run-up to Christmas. "I would urge customers to take all precautions to ensure they buy from legitimate sites only," he said.
200 FLIGHTS AT HEATHROW CANCELLED BECAUSE OF FOG

Passengers at Heathrow told today how they spent hours curled up on benches or sleeping on towels after fog led to dozens of flights being cancelled. The airport axed another 64 flights this morning on top of nearly 150 yesterday. The destinations affected included Manchester, Glasgow, Amsterdam, Brussels and Nice. Some travellers were forced to spend the night at the airport and even pay for new tickets. Recruitment worker Gizem Yildiz, 20, and her three friends spent more than 18 hours in the airport after their 8.10pm Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt was cancelled. The group slept on the floor and spent all their money on food after the airline would not provide them with a meal. Ms Yildiz said: "We got here two-and-a-half hours before our flight was supposed to leave to find that it had been cancelled. "We were given conflicting information by different people - at first we were told that we could get on an earlier flight at 7pm but that was full. We slept on the floor on towels but we weren't allowed on a 6.15am flight either so we're still here. I was supposed to be going on a business trip from Frankfurt this morning but I've had to cancel it. We're really angry and tired." Bjorn Birgisson from Iceland was stranded at the airport from 10pm after the cancellation of his flight from Brussels to Heathrow meant he missed his connection to Reykjavik. The 59-year-old said: "Now my flight is not until 1pm and I've had to pay 650 euros for a new flight, which is more than the cost of my initial return ticket, as the second carrier said it was not their fault British Airways had cancelled. "So who is going to pay my expenses because BA could not get me here on time? I arrived here six hours after I was supposed to... I'm furious." Conditions improved this morning and officials said there would be no further restrictions on flying, though more misery was expected for other areas of the country after the Met office issued a severe weather warning. Ten departing flights at London City Airport were also cancelled today while one flight scheduled to leave Leeds Bradford Airport was also axed. A Heathrow spokeswoman said: "There are currently no delays to flights but we advise passengers to check with their airlines before travelling."
NEMA closes petrol stations in Mombasa
More than 10 pump petrol stations have been closed in Mombasa by the environment watchdog. The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) is also investigating some operators who have allegedly forged operating documents. The Authority alleges that the environmental impact assessment licences produced by the pump station operators were questionable because the reference numbers did not tally with their classification criteria for those types of businesses. Benson Wemali, the officer in charge of compliance and enforcement at Nema said the petrol stations were operating illegally and posed a risk to residents as most of them were located in residential estates. The authority said there were nearly 30 such petrol stations operating in residential areas. The operators are also accused of selling fuel stolen from trucks by cartels operating along the Northern Corridor. According to the Kenya Transport Association, whose members own more than 20,000 trucks, fuel worth more than 7 million shillings is stolen from trucks daily.
City's 'average pay' leaps 12% to £83,000
Average pay in the City of London has jumped by 12% to £83,000 in the last year, with managing directors enjoying a 21% increase to £237,000, a new report said today. A study by recruitment firm Astbury Marsden showed pay rose more in the first half of the year when confidence among banks was high. The biggest average pay increases were for City workers who changed jobs (up 20%) or were promoted (up 15%). Staff who stayed put and were not promoted saw pay increase 8%. Mark Cameron, chief operating officer at Astbury Marsden, said: "Pay rises in the last six months were far rarer and now City employees are expecting the impact of the eurozone crisis to produce very weak bonuses.
Demolitions: Parliamentary committee tours Syokimau
A special parliamentary committee investigating the controversial demolitions of houses in Syokimau, Kiang'ombe and Maasai village estates in Nairobi and Mavoko Monday toured the affected areas. The committee led by Gachoka MP Mutava Musyimi and his Mt Elgon Counterpart Fred Kapondi will also hold a meeting with the victims and the Kenya Airports Authority representatives on Tuesday. The committee members are drawn from departmental committees which include Lands and Natural resources, Administration and National Security, Local Authorities, Transport, Public Works and Housing. The members will also meet officials from the Mavoko Municipal Council as well as the Nairobi City council since the affected people in the lands disputes come from Embakasi and Kathiani constituencies. The committee which is expected to table its report in Parliament in will also meet the Attorney General and officials from the Housing, Transport and Local Authorities ministries. The government which has come under fire in Parliament over the demolitions maintains the evictions at Syokimau were done because the land legally belonged to KAA.

Eritrea wants UN action on Kenya over Somalia claim
Eritrea has complained to the U.N. Security Council about Kenyan allegations that it sent weapons to Islamist rebels in Somalia, calling for an independent investigation to judge the dispute. Foreign Minister Osman Saleh said in a letter to the Council that Eritrea was confident an investigation would find Kenya's accusations to be baseless, and urged the United Nations to take action. The government has accused Eritrea of flying in weapons for Al Shabaab, an insurgent group liked to al Qaeda which has been fighting the Western-backed Somali government since 2007, and which is now also battling Kenyan forces. "If, as Eritrea confidently believes, the investigation determines that there is no basis whatsoever to the very serious and harmful accusations by the government of Kenya, Eritrea calls on the Security Council to take action that would redress the injustice suffered by the people and government of Eritrea," Saleh wrote in the letter, seen by Reuters.
Heavy storm disrupts city power supply

Power supply in various parts of Nairobi was interrupted after a heavy storm destroyed Kenya Power installations in the city Sunday evening. Kenya Power's Chief Manager in charge of Information Technology and Telecommunications, Eng. Johnson Olenchoe, said the storm brought down a billboard located along Thika Road in Ruaraka, which broke two 66 kV high voltage lines serving Westlands and Parklands substations. Several estates namely Ruaraka, Kahawa Sukari, Westlands, Parklands, Eastleigh, Spring Valley and Muthaiga have been without power . Other areas affected by the outage include Uthiru, Kikuyu, Kariobangi, Baba Dogo, Limuru, Ngara, Riverside, Waiyaki Way, Kyuna, Peponi and Kijabe Street. Mr Olenchoe said the Company has mobilised an operations and maintenance team to commence repairs on the affected lines and installations to ensure supply is restored within 5 to 6 hours. Meanwhile, Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of a possible outbreak of waterborne diseases and malaria following the recent heavy downpour in several parts of the country. The Director of the Meteorological Department Joseph Mukabana says slum dwellers are at a higher risk of contracting the diseases due to poor sanitation in these areas. He called on the government to create public awareness on how to curb such diseases. Mukabana also said Nyanza, Western and Coastal regions are expected to continue receiving heavy short rainfall until January next year.
I won't withdraw Elections Bill, vows Mutula
Justice Minister Mutula kilonzo has vowed that he will not withdraw the bill seeking to change the election date from August to December next year. The Minister who is calling for sobriety and logic to prevail insists the proposed amendments are essential to prepare for proper, transparent and credible elections. Mutula refuted claims that the cabinet is under pressure to withdraw the bill to give room for negotiations. The Bill proposes the change of the election date from the second Tuesday of August to the third Monday of December of every fifth year. It also seeks to deliver a formula on how to achieve the two-thirds cap on gender in elective seats. MPs have blocked the bill saying the minister had bundled proposals to review the elections date, gender requirement, and another on 80 new constituencies into a single Bill.
Fury as gang abducts fishermen in Malindi

Gunmen believed to be Somali pirates staged a daring night attack on a fishing village near Malindi and abducted six fishermen. The raiders, who struck at Ngomeni village, 40 kilometres North East of Malindi town, were said to have used a boat loaded with grenades, guns and two special ladders for boarding ships. The attack comes more than a month after Kenya sent troops inside Somalia to crush Al-Shabaab militants who have been accused of either carrying out abductions or protecting the pirates who do so. Kenyan naval and land forces appear to have suppressed the operations of pirates particularly in southern Somalia. Security agencies were immediately deployed to Ngomeni to pursue the pirates but the fact that the pirates were able to evade security and come that far down the coast has angered local leaders. Area MP Amason Kingi, the Fisheries Development minister, challenged his Defence and Internal Security counterparts to beef up security.

“I am shocked by this incident. Where are the special forces? Where is our Navy if a speed boat loaded with such arsenal could sail all the way from Somalia to mainland Ngomeni to kidnap innocent fishermen?” asked the minister. The area is served by two police boats. Magarini DC Richard Karani said when the administration got information about the attack, one of the police boats had a mechanical problem while the other was patrolling off Watamu beach line. “That is why we could not respond very swiftly,” he said. He added that security forces will be deployed to all tourist hotels in the area. Residents said the pirates arrived at Ngomeni at 8pm on Saturday in a speed boat. They attacked the fishermen as they prepared to leave for a night fishing expedition. “They arrived dramatically and before anybody realised what was happening, they had hurled six fishermen into their boat at gun point and fled,” said Mr Omar Mshamu, a resident and chairman of the Coast Beach Management Units in the area.

DC Karani said the bandits forced the fishermen to take them to Che Shale brach hotel, further north, with the aim of kidnapping tourists. When they reached Che Shale and attempted to enter the compound, they were confronted by watchmen and started firing in the air sending guests and workers scampering for cover,” Mr Mshamu said. In the confusion, the captain of the fishermen, Mr Abdalla Twalib, escaped. “They thought Mr Twalib had raised the alarm and fled,” said Mshamu. They later dumped their five captives at sea. The fishermen swam back to Che Shale Island where they arrived at 2am. They were picked up and taken to Malindi Police Station for interrogation. On Sunday, there were reports that Ethiopia, which also faces a threat from the militants, had sent troops across the border into Somalia to fight Al-Shabaab. In central Somalia, meanwhile, residents said on Saturday, they had seen Ethiopian troops, in convoys of armoured vehicles crossing the border in Balanbale district. And in Mandera, which borders both Somalia and Ethiopia, residents said they saw a convoy of trucks and armoured vehicles pass through the town before entering Somalia.
Diplomatic offensive
It could not be immediately confirmed whether the Ethiopians were part of the African Union Mission in Somalia, Amisom, that comprise of Uganda and Burundi, or they had entered into a separate arrangement with Kenya. Kenya has in the recent past been on a diplomatic offensive seeking support for the Somali operation against Al-Shabaab. This is the second time Ethiopia is deploying troops in Somalia. In 2006, Addis Ababa, with the support of the US, helped to oust the Islamic Courts Union before withdrawing in 2009. The militants have warned Ethiopia that they would “break the necks” of their troops inside Somalia. “Soldiers of our enemy, the black colonialists of Ethiopia, made some movements into our region on Saturday, but they do not scare us,” said Sheikh Yusuf Ali Ugas, the insurgent group’s commander for the Hiran region. “We will break the necks of the invaders... Our troops are ready for anything, if the Ethiopian enemy tries to attack us,” Ugas added, speaking on the group’s radio Al Andalus.
Lt-Col Paddy Ankunda, the spokesman of the peacekeepers serving with Amisom, told the local media that attempts by Al-Shabaab to recapture Mogadishu were repelled. Lt. Col. Ankunda said the last attempt was an attack on Karaan district in North Mogadishu on Friday night. “Their (Al-Shabaab fighters) aim was to seize positions they lost in Karaan district,” said the Amisom spokesman. On Wednesday, Presidents Kibaki, Sheikh Sharif Ahmed (Somalia) and Yoweri Museveni (Uganda) held a closed-door meeting in Nairobi and reaffirmed their commitment to military operations against Al-Shabaab in Somalia. – Sunday Nation.

Brit Bosses Lose Confidence Over Euro Crisis
Failure to contain the eurozone debt crisis has caused a sharp fall in confidence among senior business leaders, who fear the onset of another banking crisis. Some 70% of business leaders who answered a survey by the employers' group Confederation of Business Industry (CBI) said their confidence in the economic outlook had fallen since the beginning of August. The survey of 122 senior figures from FTSE 350 companies, as well as others operating in the UK, revealed that 30% believed their company's prospects had deteriorated. Despite earlier expectations of an economic rebound in 2012, 57% said they expected no change to the economic outlook. Only 11% said that their trading conditions had improved amid stark warnings from the International Monetary Fund and World Bank that the world economy had entered a "danger zone". The survey was released ahead of the CBI annual conference at which the government will be told that a renewed growth strategy must accompany its deficit reduction programme. CBI director-general John Cridland said: "Business confidence has been hit by the eurozone crisis and fears of a second banking crisis in 2012, so firms are revising their investment and employment plans. Mr Cridland told Sky News: "We can't actually make Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy do anything other than what they want to do but the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the British Prime Minister can still do things that will influence growth in Britain.

Drunk zoo visitor attacked by monkeys after climbing into enclosure
 
A Brazilian man paid a heavy price after climbing into a zoo enclosure to play with the monkeys, as the primates attacked him. Mechanic Joao Leite dos Santos, from Sao Paulo, admitted he had been drinking when he went to the Sorocaba Zoo in the city. Seeing the enclosure of spider monkeys, Mr Dos Santos decided that that they looked like a playful bunch so, shirtless and shoeless, he scaled the fence and climbed down to join in. However, as he waded across the small stream that surrounds the monkeys' home, he soon found that the animals were not as friendly as he hoped. A number of the primates had been eyeing him up since he climbed the fence, and six of them gathered on the bank to attack him as he tried to haul himself out of the water, biting him on the wrist, arm and shoulder. The drunken visitor soon aborted his playdate with the monkeys and was helped out of the enclosure, dripping with blood and in immense pain, by horrified onlookers. Mr Dos Santos then lay on the floor writhing in agony while zoo workers waited for an ambulance to come and get him, at which point he was taken to hospital for treatment. Unfortunately for the sheepish Mr Dos Santos, the whole incident was caught on film by an amateur cameraman and posted on YouTube, meaning that the whole world can now enjoy his moment of drunken madness.

Ethiopian troops 'cross border into Somalia'

As the Kenyan military continues with its operations against the Al shabaab, it is alleged that several hundred Ethiopian troops crossed into southern and central Somalia on Saturday to help fight the outlawed terror group. The Ethiopian government has however denied the incursion claiming their soldiers have not been in the country since 2009 when they withdrew after a controversial three year presence. According to eyewitnesses, Ethiopian troops have crossed the border into Somalia in major numbers. They say they saw at least 20 vehicles carrying Ethiopian troops, a claim that has been dismissed by the Ethiopian government. If confirmed this would increase the pressure on al shabaab as the Kenyan army continues to work with Somalia troops in what appears to be an effort to drive them away from the border and possibly out of the lucrative port of Kismayo. In a press briefing on Saturday, assistant director of foreign services in the Ministry of foreign affairs Lindsay Kipkiness said Ethiopia is free to combat the al shabaab militia. Meanwhile according to the United Nations the humanitarian crisis in central and southern Somalia sparked by years of conflict and extreme drought is the worst in the world, with nearly 250,000 people facing imminent starvation, a situation that could be escalated by the ongoing fighting.

Church of England bishops criticise government's welfare reforms

Eighteen Church of England bishops have criticised the government's welfare reforms, writing in an open letter of their concern over a planned benefits cap for families. In the letter to the Observer, the bishops claim they feel ‘compelled to speak for children’ as a result of the coalition government’s plans to cap benefits for families at £500-a-week. The House of Lords will debate the Welfare Reform Bill on Monday, but the Bishop of Leeds and Ripon John Packer has tabled a series of amendments to the bill after working with the Children’s Society. Commenting on the planned reforms, Bishop Packer said: ‘I think it is the care for children which is particularly important to me in this whole debate about welfare and about the way in which people are treated in our society.’ The archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and the archbishop of York John Sentamu have both backed the calls from the bishops, with a spokesperson for Lambeth Palace declaring: ‘As a president of the Children's Society the archbishop fully supports the proposed amendments to the welfare reform bill.’ Defending the bill, a spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions countered the criticism of the reforms by stating: ‘It simply isn't fair that households on out-of-work benefits can receive a greater income from the state than the average working household gets in wages. ‘This is why we have proposed a benefit cap of around £500 per week for couple and single parent households - that's the equivalent of a salary of £35,000 a year before tax.’

Two Die As Egypt Violence Enters Second Day

Egyptian police have clashed with protesters in Cairo for a second day following the death of two people on Saturday. Demonstrators are demanding that the military quickly announce a date to hand power to an elected government. More than 600 others were injured in clashes in Cairo after riot police stormed Tahrir Square to clear a protest camp, officials said. Officers fired rubber bullets, tear gas and hit demonstrators with batons in the Egyptian capital. Hundreds of protesters fought back, hurling stones and setting an armoured police vehicle on fire. It has been the worst violence since the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak in February.

Mysterious deaths of Kenya-Stockholmers in apartments on the increase
Mr. Boniface Mutahi Gacheru, a 67 year old Kenyan who has been residing in Sweden since the 70s, is dead. Although available information indicate that Mr. Gacheru died on September 12th, close friends who have been contacted by KSB have said that they do not know when or how he died. Information about his death became known to KSB contacts today after details about his burial were published in Mitt I Botkyrka Salem, a local weekly newspaper in Bortkyrka municipality. The latest Edition of the Weekly went into circulation today. According to an advertisement placed by unknown people in the paper, Gacheru will be buried on Thursday December 1st 2011 at Lilla Dalens Church at 11.00 hrs. A Swedish Funeral company called Isacson will take care of the burial.
Mr. Gacheru hails from Nyeri district in Kenya and came to Sweden from the former Soviet Union where he was studying. According to Kenyan friends, the late Kenyan never married and had no children. In Stockholm, friends used to call him Cow Boy and he is well known for his gambling with horses. The late Kenyan is known to have been a very hard working person. According to information gathered by KSB, Mr. Mutahi used to work with a Cooperative firm but when he lost his job due to retrenchment, he moved to Grand Hotel, his last known workplace, where he was dong the dishes.
Friends have informed KSB that the circumstances of the burial constitutes a secret burial and the questions being asked is why the Kenyan community (including close friends) know nothing about his death and burial. Friends have also told KSB that the late Gacheru never changed his citizenship and the next question is whether the Kenyan Embassy has been informed by the Swedish authorities about his death and whether the Embassy knows that he will be buried in Sweden without the participation of his relatives back home.

Kenya Shillings appreciates steadily as the exchange in London goes down to KShs. 140 against the Sterling pound. The shilling was steady against the dollar, as greenback inflows from aid agencies were matched by interbank demand and traders said they expected the local currency to firm by the end of session. In early trade Friday 18th November, 2011, commercial banks quoted the shilling at Sh92.40/60 against the dollar, unchanged from Thursday’s close. "We’ve seen a bit of dollar supply from the non-governmental organisations but they are evenly matched with interbank demand. There is not much interest at the moment," said Duncan Kinuthia, head of trading at Commercial Bank of Africa. Some traders expected the shilling to break through the Sh92.00 shilling resistance level, helped by banks cutting long greenback positions in the face of a shilling liquidity crunch and importers holding back dollars orders. "As we move higher, importers prefer to stay out, expecting a cheaper dollar," said Kinuthia. The shilling has firmed 13.6 per cent from its all-time low of 107 hit on October 11, after the Central Bank raised its key lending rate sharply to 16.5 per cent on November 1, to fight inflation and exchange rate volatility. - Reuters

It is high summer in the polar regions, and the sun never sets. Vast hordes of summer visitors cram a lifetime of drama into one long, magical day; they must feed, fight and rear their young in this brief window of plenty. Summer is a tough time for the polar bear family, as their ice world melts away and the cubs take their first swimming lesson. Some bears save energy by dozing on icy sun beds, while others go egg-collecting in an Arctic tern colony, braving bombardment by sharp beaks. There are even bigger battles on the tundra; a herd of musk oxen gallop to the rescue as a calf is caught in a life and death struggle with a pair of Arctic wolves. But summer also brings surprises, as a huge colony of 400,000 king penguins cope with an unlikely problem - heat. The adults go surfing, while the woolly-coated chicks take a cooling mud bath. Nearby, a bull fur seal is prepared to fight to the death with a rival. Fur flies as the little pups struggle desperately to keep out of the way of the duelling giants. Further south, a minke whale is hunted amongst the ice floes by a family of killer whales. The dramatic chase lasts over 2 hours and has never been filmed before. The killers harry the minke whale, taking it in turns to wear it down. Eventually it succumbs to the relentless battering. Finally, comical adelie penguins waddle back to their half a million strong colony like clockwork toys. The fluffy chicks need constant feeding and protection as piratical skuas patrol the skies. When an unguarded chick is snatched, a dramatic "dogfight" ensues.

UK head of people smuggling gang jailed

A woman who ran the UK arm of an international people smuggling gang has been jailed for 5 years, following an investigation by the UK Border Agency. Thuy Nguyen, a 41-year-old Vietnamese national, was arrested at her home in Bow, east London, in February 2011 as part of an operation involving law enforcement agencies in 5 different countries. Nguyen was a member of a criminal network which would smuggle immigrants from Vietnam to Europe via Moscow or Paris, charging them up to £12,000 each. The network had cells in France, Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic, and Europol carried out simultaneous operation in these countries alongside the UK Border Agency's arrest of Nguyen. Andy Cummins, head of the UK Border Agency's South East region immigration crime team, said:
'Nguyen exploited vulnerable immigrants to profit a major international organised criminal network. This was a major pan-European investigation involving law enforcement agencies in five European countries.
'Working with the police and other law enforcement partners at home and abroad we are determined to tackle the organised criminals who prey on vulnerable immigrants, and take action against those who break the law.'
Nguyen originally came to the attention of the UK authorities after her car was pulled over by traffic police at Clackett Lane Service Station on the M25 in November 2010. Her 2 passengers that day were both Vietnamese illegal immigrants. Officers also found £11,000 cash in a plastic bag. She was arrested and later bailed, but further enquiries linked her to an organised crime group being investigated by French police. This led to the our operation. As Nguyen was re-arrested by officers from our criminal and financial investigation team in London, European law enforcement agencies carried out co-ordinated raids in Paris, Prague, Berlin, Munich and Budapest. In total there were more than 30 arrests. Nguyen was charged with conspiring to facilitate illegal immigration, and stood trial at Maidstone Crown Court. She was found guilty and sentenced on 17 November. A Proceeds of Crime investigation has now been launched to seize profits made by Nguyen as a result of the scam.
'UHURU IS THE RICHEST KENYAN'
  
Uhuru whose Kenyatta family claims their wealth is exaggerated.
FORBES Magazine has listed Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta as worth US$500 million (Sh47.5 billion) making him the 26th richest person in Africa and the richest Kenyan in their line-up. Forbes released its list of the 40 richest Africans yesterday. The next Kenyan on the list is businessman Chris Kirubi at number 31 worth $300 million. Forbes is famous for its annual global Rich List which reports the 1,000 richest people in the world. "Kenya's Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta is the son of Kenya's first President Jomo Kenyatta, and heir to some of the largest land holdings in Kenya," Forbes stated. The magazine claimed that Uhuru and the family own vast amounts of prime land across the country. "The land was acquired by his father in the 1960s and 1970s when the British colonial government and the World Bank funded a settlement transfer fund scheme that enabled government officials and wealthy Kenyans to acquire land from the British at very low prices," Forbes explains.
However the Kenyatta family has always insisted that its landholdings are not that extensive. Few, if any, land titles are likely to bear Uhuru Kenyatta's name. "Uhuru and his family also own Brookside Dairies, Kenya's largest dairy company, as well as stakes in popular television station K24 and a commercial bank in Nairobi, among other interests," Forbes states in its short section on Uhuru. Uhuru, the Kanu chairman, has declared that he will be standing in the 2012 presidential election even if the ICC confirms that he should go for a full trial on charges of crimes against humanity. "Even if the assessment of his personal wealth is exaggerated, the Forbes report can only help Uhuru at election time. His biggest selling point will be that he does not need to be corrupt because he is already wealthy," said a political analyst yesterday. The Forbes list may not be completely accurate. Various families and individuals including former President Moi and his son Gideon are believed to be wealthier that the Kenyattas. The richest man in Africa is Nigerian Aliko Dangote, with a $10.1 billion fortune based on his stake in publicly-traded Dangote Cement as well as his interests in flour milling, sugar refining and salt processing. The second richest man is South African diamond magnate Nicky Oppenheimer with a $6.5 billion fortune.
Forbes focused on African citizens excluding potential members like Sudanese-born billionaire Mo Ibrahim who is a UK citizen; South African-born Ivan Glasenberg, CEO of commodities trader Glencore, who is Australian citizen; and former South African billionaire Donald Gordon, now a British citizen and who lives in the UK. "We calculated the fortunes using stock prices and currency exchange rates from close of business Wednesday, November 2. To value privately-held businesses we couple estimates of revenues or profits with prevailing price-to-sales or price-to-earnings ratios for similar public companies. "We have purposely excluded dispersed family fortunes such as the Chandaria family of Kenya and the Madhvanis of Uganda, because the wealth is believed to be held by dozens of family members. We do include wealth belonging to a member’s immediate relatives if the wealth can be traced to one living individual; in that case, you’ll see “& family” on our list as an indication," said Forbes. In September at the International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo asked if Uhuru was indeed a rich man. He replied that he did not consider himself a poor person but did not elaborate further. Kirubi, 70, has built an empire spanning real estate, manufacturing and investments. His real estate holdings include Nairobi’s International House building. He is said to own residential and commercial properties across the city, valued at more than $200 million. “People say I am one of the richest people in Kenya, but that’s not my concern,” he is quoted by Forbes.
“When I look around at my companies and see the number of people we have employed, it gives me joy. It is more satisfying than having all the money in the world,” he adds. Kirubi started building his fortune in the early 1970s. After working for several years at Kenatco, he began acquiring run-down residential and commercial properties in Nairobi. He renovated them and flipped them for a profit. Kirubi then acquired land in Nairobi’s choicest areas and erected commercial and residential structures there. In 1998 Kirubi acquired 100 per cent of Haco Industries, the Kenyan subsidiary of a Dutch trading house, for an undisclosed sum. It became a leading indigenous manufacturer of consumer products, including TCB and Palmers. In 2008 Haco formed a joint venture with Tiger Brands, one of South Africa’s largest food manufacturers. Revenues of Haco Tiger Industries were in excess of $33 million (Sh2.475 billion) in 2010. It employs close to 700 people. In 1998 Kirubi purchased Capital FM. Kirubi holds the largest individual stake in Centum Investments, a private equity firm listed both on the Nairobi and Uganda stock exchanges with a recent market capitalisation of $92 million. Centum holds substantial stakes in Coca-Cola, Safaricom and Kenya Commercial Bank. An American couple have won free games for life for naming their newborn son after the protagonist of hit computer game, The Elder Scrolls vs. Skyrim.
Megan and Eric Kellermeyer welcomed their baby, Dovahkiin Tom Kellermeyer, into the world on 11/11/11.
Dovahkiin's parents who are huge fans of the computer game won the life-long prize that coincided with the release of the latest Skyrim game.
The makers of the game, Bethesda Software, announced back in February that anyone who had a child on the game's launch date, 11/11/11, and named him or her 'Dovahkiin' would win every ZeniMax/Bethesda game - past, present and future - for life.So avid gamers Megan and Eric did just that.
When we heard that parents had chosen ‘Facebook’ and ‘Like’ for their children we thought baby names couldn’t get any crazier.
But they have managed to trump those unique names. The couple posted entries on their blog explaining that they would have chosen the name even if the contest didn’t exist. Megan wrote: “I wanted him to have a unique name. I am so picky about boy names that I was having a lot of trouble finding just the right one. We've toyed with Dovahkiin and the ramifications of naming a child that name, and that name being based on a video game character (however awesome), and what impact that would have on him. But the more I thought of it, the more I settled on Dovahkiin, contest or no.”On the day after Dovahkiin was born the couple announced: "Mama and baby are doing perfect. The Doctor said it was a perfect delivery. Dovahkiin Tom Kellermeyer was born at 6:08pm on 11/11/11."
Mentioning the naming contest they wrote: “We conceived long before hearing of it. But it's been a tough year and I wanted to do something special for my son. My daughter has a unique name. I wanted him to have a unique name as well.”
Bethesda now admits the offer was in jest, but they will keep to their word and provide the family with free computer games for life. Little Dovahkiin may have an unusual name but at least he has great story to tell about how he got it.
Why Diaspora vote could be game-changer

Presidential aspirants are competing to woo the Diaspora voting-bloc constituting a third of eight million unregistered voters the electoral commission is eyeing. In its exit report, the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) recommends that its successor register more than eight million eligible voters. These include people with special needs and the estimated three million Kenyans in the Diaspora; a voting-bloc analysts suggest could be a swing vote in the General Election. Once the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) enroll the additional eight million voters, the total number is expected to hit 20 million. The exact number of eligible voters abroad is unclear, with the IIEC exit report variously citing two and three million. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is understood to have compiled a report profiling Kenyans living abroad and how they are distributed. It has reportedly been turned over to the IEBC to help in preparation for voter registration outside Kenya. Presidential aspirants are paying more attention to the new voting bloc, which would constitute 15 per cent of the total registered voters, enough to tilt the scales in a closely contested election. Leaders jostling to succeed President Kibaki are increasingly turning to foreign capitals to market themselves. In the past week, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Planning Assistant Minister Peter Kenneth were in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Abdikadir Mohammed, the chairman of the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee, says the size of the Diaspora vote is large enough that no serious presidential aspirant can ignore.
Massive vote
Mr Abdikadir suggests that most of the voters are concentrated in Western Europe and North America, adding that the various presidential camps are scrambling to map out the vote-rich regions. Budalang’i MP, Ababu Namwamba, described the Diaspora vote as a "huge pool" that could prove decisive in the elections due next year. "This is going to be the swing vote. It could be the turning point especially in a tight contest. I expect the number of visits by presidential aspirants abroad to increase as we hit the homestretch," Mr Ababu said. Political analyst Adams Oloo concurs that the Diaspora constitutes a "massive vote that can tilt the vote either way".
Office in London
"The importance of this untested voting bloc cannot be gainsaid for politicians, because they haven’t voted before, you can’t exactly tell their voting pattern," he adds. The PNU Alliance took the battle for the Diaspora vote a notch higher when Kalonzo announced the opening of an office in London. It became the first political party to set up shop in the United Kingdom, hoping to use the London office as recruiting centre for Kenyans in Europe. Addressing Kenyans at the Crystal Hall, Ilford, East London, Kalonzo termed the move the first step towards co-ordinating the search for the crucial Diaspora vote. The VP spoke on a stopover en-route to Nicosia, Cyprus, at the invitation of the Cyprian President Dimitris Christofias.
In Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kenneth held talks with Japanese officials and addressed Kenyans living in the world’s third largest economy. Kenneth’s weeklong visit saw him address Kenyans at Nishitetsu Grand Hotel in Fukuoka city. The previous day, he had spoken to a gathering of Kenyans at Rhiga Royal Hotel in Kyoto. On a weeklong visit in Israel, the PM held talks with President Shimon Peres and Premier Benjamin Netanyahu. Raila had an unscheduled meeting with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. The ODM leader and his wife Ida also paid a pilgrimage to biblical sites. Raila, Kalonzo and Kenneth have in the past addressed Kenyans in the United States, as has Gichugu MP, Martha Karua, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, and Eldoret North MP William Ruto. There are 12.4 million registered voters. Based on the 2009 census, the IIEC report notes: "A lot needs to be done to ensure that the more than eight million eligible voters not registered are registered as provided for in the Constitution." The Elections Act provides that there shall be a Principal Register of Voters, which shall include a register of voters abroad. Those willing to participate are required to register at centres that the electoral body plans to establish in the Kenyan embassies and consulates.
More discerning
Ababu said voters abroad could inject freshness because they were "more discerning, critical and eagle-eyed to pick the best (leader) from the pack". "Due to exposure to different democratic views, most are well aware of issues and might be different from the average Kenyan voter persuaded by ethnic and political affiliations," observed Ababu. But Abdikadir differed arguing that comments posted on online media suggested that some were still captive to ethnic viewpoints. "One would hope the Diaspora vote injects positive energy devoid of ethnic chauvinism to head towards issue-based discourse. But judging from comments on blogs, one feels disappointed," he said. Ababu, however, cautioned that the voting by Kenyans abroad presented enormous logistical challenges. – The Standard.

Bulldozers raze Maasai manyattas

Maasai manyattas (huts) in Embakasi, Nairobi, were on Thursday demolished in ongoing government efforts to clear settlements said to have been illegally built on a land belonging to Kenya Airports Authority. The demolitions went on as four parliamentary committees teamed up to conduct investigations into the demolitions of houses in Syokimau over the weekend. The joint team has two weeks to dig into the land ownership saga and the decision to bring down the houses. The team will also look into evictions in Kyang’ombe and Maasai villages. The investigating team brings together members of the Administration of Justice and National Security Committee, Local Authorities Committee, Transport, Public Works and Housing committees and Lands Committee. - The Standard.
Revealed: How land cartels fleece Kenyan buyers

A cartel of land officers, lawyers, real estate agents and brokers is duping innocent Kenyans into buying non-existent land. The well-organised fraudsters use existing deed plans — documents showing location and divisions on land — to tamper with records at the Lands ministry. The cartel is behind the runaway cases of people buying land belonging to other people. Investigations by the Saturday Nation following the Syokimau demolitions that saw Kenyans lose millions of shillings in investment found the racket is countrywide. Once the racketeers identify a piece of land they wish to “sell”, they alert their contacts at the Lands ministry who prepare a parallel set of fake documents which they use to dupe their victims. A victim of these murky deals whose land was sold without his knowledge, said the racketeers are so meticulous only a keen eye can detect the fraud. The fraudsters scout for land that has recently been sub-divided. They usually start their scavenging at the Nairobi City Council where they scour records for details of land transactions that have been approved, including sub-divisions, by town planning committees.
Open to the public Armed with this information, they forge letters purporting to be from the council indicating an approval, complete with dates and the plots that need to be sub-divided. The information comprises minutes of town planning committee meetings and sub-division of plots published in a book that is open to the public. The forged letters, however, will have different land reference numbers. For instance, if the block title was 54/784, the racketeers could indicate their land reference as 54/256. The racketeers also ensure that they include the exact date the Commissioner of Lands approved the sub-division. This is allegedly done in collusion with officers in the Ministry of Lands. Because the original title deed ought to be surrendered, the racketeers generate plot numbers different from the original ones. What helps them, however, is that the part of the title block numbers for the genuine plots will have changed. The number 54 and the new numbers is what remains— say 54/89-320. - Daily Nation.
Another Mboi-I-Kamiti official murdered
A former chairman of the trouble ridden Mboi- I - Kamiti society has been shot dead. Stephen Waweru was shot twice in the head while on his way to Kiambu at around 9.00 am Friday morning in Kambui village in Githunguri District of Kiambu County. Kiambu Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Samuel Mukindia said Waweru was attacked by four armed gangsters. He was rushed to Kiambu District Hospital where he died while receiving treatment. The wife to the deceased Jeniffer Ngendo said that the murder did not come as a surprise since he had received death threats from unknown people. She appealed to police officers to arrest the murderers and ensure justice is done. Police are investigating the murder. Mboi-I- Kamiti has over two decades been involved in leadership squabbles and mismanagement of assets. The land buying company has hit the headlines on several occasions over leadership disputes. In January a director of the firm was shot dead by unknown people as he waited to board a vehicle at the company's Kabazi estate.
Barclays bank workers jailed for £1.3m fraud

Two Barclays Bank workers have been jailed at Birmingham Crown Court for defrauding three elderly customers of £1.3m. Karl Edwards, 44, who worked at Barclays in Birmingham, and Andrew Waters, 26, based at a Croydon branch, were each sentenced to five years. They used inside knowledge to pose as the relations of customers who held dormant accounts. Two other men, not Barclays employees, helped move the money offshore. All four men admitted fraud. Joseph Murphy, 36, from Carshalton, Surrey, was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison, and Nathan Denton, 37, from Water Orton, Staffordshire, got four-and-a-half years. The court heard that Waters had identified two large accounts, held by customers in their 80s, that had been dormant for a number of years. Edwards then used his more senior position to help set up access.
'Slickly run'
The men then posed as relations of the account-holders, using fake passports and false bank accounts, the court heard. About £900,000 was removed from a joint account held by a couple, while £400,000 was taken from an account held by a woman. Only £51,000 has been recovered. The prosecution said the operation was "slickly run and rapidly achieved". The court heard how Murphy and Waters had helped move the money "rapidly offshore". West Midlands Police said all four men were identified from information held on their computers and mobile phones. Det Con Simon Hughes said the men had been arrested in May 2006, although Murphy had breached the terms of his bail and fled the country. He was rearrested in May 2010 at Los Angeles Airport. Det Con Hughes said: "The bankers deliberately targeted elderly wealthy victims who rarely checked their bank accounts. One victim had not been to the bank for over 20 years. "The bankers used their position of trust and access to confidential customer information as a vital link in the fraud."
Man charged with trying to assassinate Obama

A 21-year-old Idaho man who allegedly called US President Barack Obama the "devil" and the "anti-Christ" was charged with attempting to assassinate him by firing shots at the White House. Oscar Ortega-Hernandez was arrested by Pennsylvania state police on Wednesday following last week's shooting incident at the presidential mansion in Washington, one of the world's most closely guarded buildings. Obama and his wife Michelle were in California at the time of the incident, and no one was injured. Ortega-Hernandez was charged in US federal court in Pittsburgh, where a judge ordered that he remain in police custody, the official said. He could face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. He was arrested at a hotel near Indiana, Pennsylvania, after gunshots were heard late Friday near the White House, about 600 to 700 yards (meters) away on Constitution Avenue, Secret Service special agent Edwin Donovan said. Within five minutes of the shooting, authorities located an abandoned vehicle on Constitution Avenue, which runs along the northern border of the Washington Mall. That car was found to be registered to Ortega-Hernandez.

His Excellency the Vice President of Kenya Hon. Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and his wife Mrs Pauline Musyoka visited Kenyans in the UK last Sunday the 13th Nov 2011. He was accompanied by an entourage of high ranking government officials from Kenya including Ministers, Assistant Ministers, MPs and business officials. He attended the Sunday Service at Revival House (IWRM), 500 High Street North, Manor Park E12 6QN.

Pastor Boniface Mbugua, Senior Pastor at Revival House started the meeting with a one minute silence to commemorate the British war heroes who fought in the world war. He gave a powerful soul reviving sermon which touched everyone in the house. He preached about loving one another, in Agape Love. He said that Agape Love is the sacrificial type of love that we Christians should seek to walk in. This was a life changing sermon for most of the people in the house and the Vice President and Ministers quoted this sermon throughout their speeches later that day.

The Revival House praise and worship team ushered in God’s presence and the Vice President and his wife, who is also a worship leader in her church, liked the worship. Revival House Sunday school children performed their vibrant number- Love each other! The house was moved by their passion and dedication to sing for the Lord and the wonderful message of love.

World's 'lightest material' unveiled by US engineers

A team of engineers claims to have created the world's lightest material. The substance is made out of tiny hollow metallic tubes arranged into a micro-lattice - a criss-crossing diagonal pattern with small open spaces between the tubes. The researchers say the material is 100 times lighter than Styrofoam and has "extraordinarily high energy absorption" properties. Potential uses include next-generation batteries and shock absorbers. The research was carried out at the University of California, Irvine and HRL Laboratories and is published in the latest edition of Science. "The trick is to fabricate a lattice of interconnected hollow tubes with a wall thickness 1,000 times thinner than a human hair," said lead author Dr Tobias Schaedler.
Myth that antibiotics cure coughs and colds still rife

A quarter of people wrongly believe antibiotics work on most coughs and colds, a Health Protection Agency survey has found. However antibiotics cannot treat viruses, which cause most respiratory tract infections. The HPA poll of 1,800 people in England also found one in 10 people keep leftover antibiotics - and many would self-medicate next time they got ill. A leading GP said antibiotics were not a "cure all". An expert in immunity and infection is also warning that the misuse of antibiotics, and drug companies' failures to develop new ones, could lead to a rise in untreatable infections. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said that antimicrobial resistance "is one of the most serious public health challenges that we face in the EU" and could cost at least 1.5bn euros. Speaking on European Antibiotics Awareness Day, the HPA's Dr Cliodna McNulty said self-medicating was unsafe and could fuel drug resistance. Dr McNulty, head of primary care for the HPA, said: "The majority of people can treat themselves at home using over-the-counter medicines to relieve symptoms." Of those polled, 500 had been prescribed antibiotics in the previous year, with 11% reporting they had leftovers and 6% saying they might take them if they had future infections.

A KENYAN LADY IN USA FOUND DEAD IN BED

Kenya shilling gains vs dollar
The Kenyan shilling gained against the dollar on Thursday, helped by agriculture sector dollar inflows, especially from tea exporters, and traders said they expected it to firm further on tight liquidity. At 0639 GMT, commercial banks quoted the shilling at 93.20/50 against the dollar, stronger than the 93.60/90 it closed at on Wednesday. Dollar/shilling "is lower today mainly on agriculture sector inflows and tight liquidity could see it edge much lower," said Wilson Mutai, a trader at African Banking Corporation. Technical charts showed the dollar support level at 92, and trader said if it were to cross, it could trade below the psychological important 90 level. Shilling liquidity in the market tightened after a sharp increase in the central bank's key interest rate to 16.5 percent on Nov 5, to support the ailing local currency and rein in rampant inflation. The bank is set to hold its next Monetary Policy Committee meeting on December 2. Traders said they also expected other dollar inflows to help the shilling firm towards the end of the year. "With the year coming to a close soon we expect NGO (non-governmental organisation) inflows, diaspora repatriations and tourism and farm inflows to continue supporting the shilling," said Bank of Africa in a daily report for clients.

For the animals in the polar regions, autumn means dramatic battles and epic journeys. Polar bears gather in large numbers on the Arctic coast as they wait for the return of the ice. Soon, tempers fray and violent sparring contests break out. Meanwhile 2,000 beluga whales head for one special estuary, a gigantic 'whale spa' where they will thrash their snow-white bodies against the gravel and exfoliate. Inland, the tundra undergoes a dramatic transformation from green to fiery red. Here, musk ox males slam head-first into each other with the force of a 30mph car crash as they struggle to defend their harems. Frisky young caribou males play a game of 'grandma's footsteps' as they try to steal the boss's female.
Down in Antarctica, Adelie penguin chicks huddle together in creches. When a parent returns from fishing, it leads its twins on a comical steeplechase - sadly there's only enough for one, so the winner gets the meal. Two months later and the chicks are fully feathered apart from downy Mohican hairdos - they're ready to take their first swim - reluctantly though, as it seems penguins are not born with a love of water! And with good reason - a leopard seal explodes from the sea and pulls one from an ice floe, a hunting manoeuvre that has never been filmed before. As winter approaches and everyone has left, the giant emperor penguin arrives and makes an epic trek inland to breed. UK Government could over-borrow by £100bn by 2015 - Labour
The government could borrow over £100bn more than it planned to up to 2015, according to Labour. The party compared Office for Budget Responsibility forecasts from November 2010 with the latest estimates. Labour said it showed the government's plans were "reckless" but Economic Secretary to the Treasury David Gauke said the claims were "nonsense". Meanwhile, Labour leader Ed Miliband will later urge ministers to change course away from economic austerity. If Labour's forecasts prove to be accurate, the government will borrow £109bn more than it had planned. The figures suggest the government could borrow £11bn more than it thought this year, £22bn next year, £34bn in 2013-14 and £42bn in 2014-15. Shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, Rachel Reeves, said: "These very concerning forecasts expose how this government's reckless plan to try and cut spending and raise taxes too far and too fast is backfiring badly, as we and the International Monetary Fund warned it would."

World Bank in bid to lower cost of sending money
In a bid to lower the cost of sending remittances to and within Africa, the World Bank and the African Union have launched an online database. The move will help increase transparency in prices and stimulate greater competition among service providers. The database, titled Send Money Africa, is a partnership between the Bank, the African Union Commission, and donors. And it works through an interface, where migrants can compare the cost that remittance service providers charge to send a particular amount to a given country. Unveiling the service Richard Cambridge, World Bank’s Africa Region Manager of the Africa Diaspora Programme said, "Send Money Africa will stimulate competition among the service providers and ultimately induce a reduction of the costs. As a result, remittance senders and recipients will benefit from transparent, efficient and less costly remittance services." The bank estimates that $40 billion (Sh4 trillion) a year is received by about 120 million people in Africa. However, Cambridge said when it comes to choosing which operator to use, migrants do not have concrete information to make an informed choice. According to the World Bank "Remittance Prices Worldwide" database, Africa is the most expensive region of the world to send money to. The average cost of sending money to Africa is more than 12 per cent the amount sent, compared to a global average cost of nine per cent. - The Standard.

Hundreds of Kenyans are expected to attend UK-Kenyans Achievers Awards ceremony in London on Friday 18th November, 2011. There has been a scramble for the limited tickets after two Kenyan artistes, comedian Churchill (Daniel Ndambuki) and gospel musician Jimmy Gait confirmed their attendance and performance at the ceremony to be held at Holiday Inn Hotel Broomsberry, London. The organizers, led by Mr Kenneth Mathiu and Ms Pauline Long, said a large number of Kenyans were showing interest in the event. "We have blended diplomacy, politics and entertainment for this prestigious event," said Mathiu, a hotelier in London. It will be the first time that two Kenyan artistes are performing at the annual Gala. The Gala awards Kenyans who have had tremendous positive influence among the Diaspora community and back home in Kenya. Foreign Affairs Assistant minister Dr Richard Onyonka will be the chief guest and Kenya’s High Commissioner Waweru Ngare will play host. Last year, Tourism minister Najib Balala graced the occasion that coincided with World Tourism Expo. Dr Onyonka is keen on the Diaspora community. The Diaspora community is estimated to have about 3.4 million voters, 60,000 of them residing in London alone. At the weekend, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka was in London where he told a small gathering of Kenyans to lobby with their Members of Parliament for representation in the august House as recognition of their economic contribution. As at now, the Diaspora remittances stand at $475 million. The new Constitution provides for dual citizenship, a move that has widely been welcomed by the Kenyan Diaspora, who will cast their votes away from home for the first time in the 2012 general election. - The Standard.

Four women jailed for helping murderers flee to Kenya
Sentenced to total of six years for arranging cash and flights for Moses Nteyoho's killers

Four women who helped the murderers of a 22-year-old man flee to Kenya were sentenced to a total of six years in prison yesterday (Nov 10). Moses Nteyoho of Abbey Wood, south London, was stabbed to death in October 2009 while making his way to a local youth project. The court heard how Ahmed Ghele, Osman Amin, Liban Ali and Burhan Yusuf travelled to the south London estate in a taxi with the sole intention of attacking or chasing some boys on the night of the murder. A week after the attack, the gang and some of their female relatives fled to Kenya to evade justice. However, all were promptly arrested when they returned to the UK separately during late 2009 and mid 2010. On July 30, Ghele, Amin, Ali and Yusuf, were sentenced to a total of 54 years in prison for the murder. Maria Abdullali Mohamed, Fardowsa Adam, Suleqo al Mohamed and Khadra Mohamed Abdi were each sentenced to 18 months behind bars for helping to arrange cash and flights for the killers so they could flee the UK. Detective Inspector Cliff Haines said: The investigation into the murder of Moses Nteyoho was long, complicated and extremely traumatic for his family who acted with dignity throughout, even though they had been devastated by Moses brutal and pointless death. This process was made even longer by the fact that these women perverted the course of the investigation by helping the murderers to leave the UK. I hope their sentences send a message to anyone who thinks they are not committing a crime by helping a suspect to evade justice," he added.

A KENYAN MAN IN LONDON JAILED FOR 15 MONTHS
A Kenyan man living with his two daughters in East London was jailed on Friday 11th November, 2011 for 15 months. The man (name withheld) has been accused by his two daughters that he has been beating them. The man has been working hard for the last 7 years to bring his two daughters to UK. After arrival - wakapata walimu kutoka kwa nchi ya hakuna matata. The daughters accused both their the father and step-mother of harassment.
The married couple were accused of child cruelty after the husband tried to strangle a 15-year-old girl because she was wearing 'inappropriate' clothes to go shopping, a court heard. The father allegedly punched the teenager all over her body and grabbed her around the throat tightened his hands around her throat after she disobeyed his order to change. More later.

UK Economic Outlook 'has got worse'
The UK's economic outlook has worsened and the economy could stagnate until the middle of next year, the governor of the Bank of England has said. Sir Mervyn King also said that the eurozone debt crisis was the "single biggest risk" to the UK. The Bank has cut its 2011 and 2012 growth predictions to about 1%. It came as the UK unemployment total rose by 129,000 in the three months to September to 2.62 million, with youth unemployment above one million. The unemployment total was the largest since 1994, and the unemployment rate rose to 8.3%, the highest since 1996.
Activity 'broadly flat'
Delivering the Bank's latest quarterly inflation report, Sir Mervyn said that the UK's economic problems were shared by other countries. He said: "The immediate impact of the decline in sentiment is that the outlook for growth for the world economy has worsened since August. "This is also true here in the United Kingdom, where activity could be broadly flat until the middle of next year." The latest inflation figures showed that rate of Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation in the UK fell slightly to 5% during October, down from a rate of 5.2% the month before. Sir Mervyn said inflation had peaked and was likely to fall sharply over the next few years.
Tough path ahead
The latest jobless figures showed that the number of unemployed 16 to 24-year-olds had broken the one-million barrier, rising to 1.016 million, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The data also showed that the number of women out of work increased by 43,000 to 1.09 million, the highest level since February 1988. The number of unemployed people rose in every part of the UK, except for the East Midlands, where it remained unchanged, and the North West and Northern Ireland, where the number of unemployed fell. The unemployment rate was highest in the North East, at 11.6%. The ONS provided a regional breakdown for jobless figures around the country.
In addition to rising unemployment, Sir Mervyn said the problems surrounding the eurozone countries would continue to affect the UK, adding that the "uncertainty" would have "some potential impact" on business investment and household spending. "Since August, difficulties in Europe have continued to dominate. The worsening global problems, imbalances and less competitiveness remain," he said. But the governor added real take-home pay should slowly start to increase next year. City analysts said that both lower growth and inflation forecasts showed the Bank would leave interest rates at the low level of 0.5% into 2013. "The report both endorses market expectations that rates will stay on hold for the foreseeable future and suggests that more policy loosening will yet be needed," said Vicky Redwood, chief UK economist at Capital Economics.
Eurozone funding
Regarding the current eurozone debt crisis, Sir Mervyn also gave support for the European Central Bank's (ECB) reluctance to bail out "deficit" countries in the eurozone, such as Italy and Spain, which are having growing difficulties borrowing from the private sector. He said that the stronger eurozone governments needed to lend in a visible way to the weaker countries, rather than finance coming through the ECB. BBC business editor Robert Peston said Sir Mervyn's comments may have killed off the idea that the ECB could become a so-called lender of last resort to governments experiencing funding difficulties. "What the governor of the Bank of England has to say about the eurozone's crisis will resonate, simply because he is one of the big global figures in central banking," he said.

ID cards used in trafficking aliens recovered
Police in Garissa on Tuesday arrested a bus driver, his conductor and recovered 23 national identity cards that are believed to be used to sneak aliens past police check points in the area. North Eastern Police boss Leo Nyongesa said security agents patrolling the Garissa - Liboi road acting on a tip off intercepted the bus about 30 kms from Garissa town. The bus was travelling from Wajir to Nairobi. On inspection the security officers recovered the ID cards stashed beneath the driver's seats. They also arrested 3 aliens' accomplices who were using the bus staff ID cards to travel. The bus christened Sabrin that was temporarily held at the Garissa police station was released later and passengers allowed to proceed with their journey. "We believe the bus personnel usually distribute the ID cards to the aliens they are ferrying to Nairobi once they approach a police checkpoint," he said. Trafficking of aliens in North Eastern Province to Nairobi is a big business, sources revealed that an alien pays an average of shs 30,000 to successfully reach Nairobi. Nyongesa lauded members of the public for their cooperation and urged them to continue volunteering information to the security agencies. The PPO issued a stern warning to bus operators in the area against engaging in the illegal businesses. "We will ensure that any bus company found engaging in such activities have their licences withdrawn," he added. The suspects will appear in court later on Tuesday.

Orengo blames MPs for land fraud

A section of MPs were accused on Tuesday of colluding with fraudsters to allocate Kenyans public land. Although the legislators were not named, Cabinet ministers James Orengo and Amos Kimunya imputed that some MPs who appeared not to want the truth of the Syokimau allocations to come out had worked in league with some known groups that allocated land to the people who in turn built homes that were demolished by the government at the weekend. The Lands and Transport ministers, amidst interruption to their contributions by MPs in Parliament, said all the documents including title deeds issued to the victims of Syokimau demolitions were all faked. “All of these papers that have been flying around are fake and do not exist in the ministry. I am prepared to prove to this House that they are all forgeries and all the documents that have been tabled before this House must be interrogated,’’ Mr. Orengo said. The minister spoke in reference to documents tabled by Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti and her Embakasi counterpart Ferdinand Waititu intended to prove that the allocations were done legally and the plot owners had documents of ownership from the Lands Ministry and rate payments from the Mavoko Municipal Council. But Mr. Orengo described as fraudsters a company by the Mlolongo Brothers and Uungani, saying they sold land to unsuspecting buyers using fake documents.
Accept ruling, ICC tells Kenya

Kenyans should be ready to accept any verdict that pre-trial judges reach against the Ocampo Six, the chief prosecutor’s office at the International Criminal Court has said. Mr. Phakiso Mochochoko, the director of jurisdiction, complementarily and cooperation division at the ICC said in Nairobi on Tuesday that the pre-trial judges’ decision should not be misunderstood to be a “guilty” or “not guilty” ruling as it was not a trial. “The cases were not against the government or any ethnic community. Kenyans must understand that the confirmation hearings were fair and accept the verdict,” he said. Mr. Mochochoko, who is in Kenya to meet NGOs, said the office of the prosecutor was already working with civil society to educate the public on the need to accept the judges’ verdict. He called on the government and to ensure that no one uses the outcome of the hearings to foment ethnic division or conflict.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga asks Israel for help

A government statement on Monday said Prime Minister Raila Odinga asked Israeli President Shimon Peres for assistance in building the capacity of the Kenyan police to deal with attacks by al-Shabaab militants.
Israeli security forces are among the best in the world in dealing with terror threats, but al-Shabaab could view Kenya's request as a provocation.

A new team to manage Kenya's general election next year has been sworn into office by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga. Chief Justice Willy Mutunga challenged the team to stick to the Constitution as a way of avoiding misdeeds by previous commissions. “The failure of the 2007 General Election was a manifestation of an oath betrayed. It was a disaster which you must do all within your power and ability to avoid.” The team takes office amid confusion on when exactly the next elections will be held. However, a case is before the Supreme Court which will help resolve the impasse. Members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) formally took office at the ceremony in held Nairobi on Monday. The team comprising nine commissioners, three of whom are women, each vowed to “uphold the constitution of the republic of Kenya and any other laws” amidst a stringent caution from Dr Mutunga that they must guide against pressure by partisan interests. IEBC replaces the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) which took over from the defunct Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) in May 2009. The ECK was disbanded after it bungled Kenya's last presidential election in 2007 in the process sinking the country into a political turmoil.

Nine militants killed in raid as Kenya seeks UN support
Kenyan and Somali troops on Saturday night killed nine Al-Shabaab militiamen after a joint patrol came across a camp of the extremist group in Gedo region in southern Somalia. Kenya Defence Forces spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir said that four Kenya soldiers were injured in the firefight. Three were treated and are back with their respective units, but “one is in critical condition and was airlifted to Garissa for medical attention.” Reports from the Nation correspondent in Mogadishu, however, say the clash came after Al-Shabaab fighters attacked a Kenyan position. Major Chirchir said a cache of arms, including rocket propelled grenades, was seized during the operation. A large group of Al-Shabaab fighters escaped with bullet wounds.

More varsities set to close as strike enters sixth day

The strike by lecturers in public universities enters its sixth day Monday with a possibility of more institutions shutting down. At the weekend, students at Chepkoilel University College in Eldoret were sent home indefinitely. The constituent college of Moi University followed Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in Kakamega and Egerton University in Nakuru in shutting down after lecturers and non-teaching staff downed their tools to emand increased salaries. Masinde Muliro and Egerton universities closed down on Friday following the strike that started on Wednesday. Chepkoilel University College principal Elijah Biamah said the board decided to “close the institution and monitor the situation” on realising that the strike would drag on. This comes even as the government said it had no money to meet the lecturers’ demands. On Sunday, Higher Education Minister Margaret Kamar said the government had redirected its resources to the war in Somalia. While she admitted that the lecturers had valid grievances, Prof Kamar said the current situation could not allow for increments on their allowances and salaries.
Jobs market 'slow, painful contraction' predicted

The UK labour market faces a "slow, painful contraction" with firms delaying recruitment of more staff, a key report suggests. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) predicted the jobs market would worsen in the medium term amid global economic "turmoil". Its quarterly survey of 1,000 employers found firms' future hiring plans dwarfed by likely public sector losses. It found employers adopting a "wait and see" policy towards the economy. This involved reduced recruitment as well as fewer redundancies. The number of UK employers planning to outsource work overseas or hire migrant workers had also fallen substantially in the last three months, the survey found. The CIPD said the employment situation could worsen if the euro zone crisis thrust the world back into recession.
Silvio Berlusconi finally resigns as Italy's prime minister

Silvio Berlusconi has resigned as prime minister of Italy, after dominating the country's politics for 17 years. President Giorgio Napolitano accepted his offer and is likely to appoint technocrat Mario Monti his successor. Mr Berlusconi lost his majority amid an acute debt crisis that threatens the eurozone. He promised to go once MPs had approved new austerity measures. Crowds celebrated outside the presidential palace, shouting "buffoon" as he entered. The BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome says Mr Berlusconi's last journey as prime minister was an undignified one. Police struggled to control a large, hostile crowd which booed and jeered as his convoy swept by, and after his resignation he left by a side exit to avoid the protesters. He said he felt "embittered" after hearing the insults. Mr Berlusconi is Italy's longest-serving post-war prime minister. His premiership has recently been marred by many scandals.

A US man who accidentally threw his wife's $10,000 (£6,000) engagement ring in the bin managed to find it after sifting through tons of rubbish at a local tip. Brian McGuinn mistakenly dumped the sparkler along with his old razor blade. His pregnant wife Anna had given him the ring while she was in the shower and because he had other rubbish in his hand he failed to notice the jewel. He only realized what he had done after the rubbish had been collected from their house in Margate, Florida. The couple ran out to try to find the bin men, only to find they had missed them by about 10 minutes. The financial adviser then wore a protective suit, and a worker directed him to the area where his area's rubbish was dumped 10ft high. After just 30 minutes of sifting through the garbage mountain, he struck lucky when he spotted a tiny glimmer surrounded by black sludge, wedged between two brown bags. "It looked like a screw, and I reached down, and it looped around my index finger," he told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "I was ecstatic. It was like winning the lottery. It was probably one of the best moments ever." He added: "I'm not in charge of the ring anymore." His wife added: "Never".

A Kenyan man dies in South London
A Kenyan man has passed away in Brockley, South London. The late Jonathan Pritt Musaa, 53, was found dead in his house on Monday 7th November, 2011. Jonathan Musaa passed away on Monday evening at his home in Finland Road, Brockley - South London. He died of heart attack and liver failure. Jonathan Musaa worked at a few Housing Associations as Housing Officer
including Ujima Housing Association and West Way Housing Association for two and half years.He was made redundant about six months ago and took it with high spirit. this did not deter him from moving forward and looking
for other jobs. But with the recession on, jobs are not easy to come by. Jonathan attended St Aloysius College, London Metropolitan University where he studied Economics. He went further to obtain MA in Urban Development and Planning at the University College
London (UCL).
Jonathan leaves behind his mother, a wife and 4 young children. For anyone who wants to pay their respects The full address is: No 30 A Finland Road, Brockley London SE4 2JH.

The British Government has endorsed Kenya's military action on Somalia
The new British High Commissioner Dr Peter Tibber said his government backs Kenya's action as it respects human rights. Dr Tibber was speaking a day after arriving in Kenya when he met Speaker Kenneth Marende. The new High Commissioner said: "What Kenya is doing is very good...We know Kenya and other countries in the region are getting it right." Dr Tibber said it is the common duty of the international community to deal with the Somalia problem and his government will assist Kenya to achieve this goal.
He said the British Government is directly affected by the instability in Somalia when its citizens cannot move freely in Kenya because of kidnappings by criminals linked to the al Shabaab.
Meanwhile, a human rights organisation in Mombasa has demanded the interdiction of the army officers involved in the shooting of the seven fishermen in Lamu. The seven were mistaken to be al Shabaab militias from Somalia and were shot by the army officers who were on patrol in Kiunga area, Lamu, near the Somalia border.

2 Samuel 11:2 reads: "One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful." David’s 'Bathsheba-gate' began when he let down his guard. The Bible says, 'Then it happened.' What an opening line! David was fifty-two. Like a lot of us in middle age, maybe he wondered, 'Do I still have it?' Whatever he thought, he wasn't on guard; and the devil knew it. David had lived victoriously for twenty years, 'Then it happened.' Be careful, yesterday doesn't guarantee your success today. David saw Bathsheba that night, but it's what he didn't see that shipwrecked him. He didn't see that his sin would cause four of his children to die (the baby, Amnon, Absalom, and Adonijah) or that it would split his kingdom in half and make him a murderer. That's the problem with sin. If you're looking at things you ought not to look at, you're not seeing the whole picture. It's what you don't see that will hurt you. So David devises plan A, plan B and plan C to cover up his sin. Plan A was to bring Bathsheba's husband Uriah home from battle to spend the weekend with his wife, so that the baby would appear to be his. But it didn't work. Plan B, getting him drunk and trying to send him home, didn't work either. Plan C wasn't so tame; it was murder. Tragically, this plan worked. 'I'd never do that,' you say. You'd be amazed what you'd do in a moment of weakness! The fire of sex is meant for the fireplace of marriage. Once it leaves there, somebody's going to get burned. Pilot dies in Red Arrows jet incident

A pilot has died following an incident involving a Red Arrows jet at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said. The pilot, who has not been named, was taken to Lincoln County Hospital in a "very serious" condition but later died. MoD said that the member of the RAF Aerobatic Team died from multiple injuries sustained during a training session in which he was ejected from the cockpit while the aircraft was still on the ground. Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance was called to RAF Scampton around 11am on Tuesday. Simon Blake, the Commandant of the RAF's Central Flying School, said in a statement that the Military Aviation Authority has begun an investigation into the tragic incident.
Europe fails to find united front on reinforcing banks
European Union finance ministers failed to agree on Tuesday how to shore up sagging banks and avert a credit squeeze, as rising borrowing costs for Italy threaten to unleash a new and more dangerous phase of the euro zone debt crisis. Against the worsening economic backdrop, European banks are finding it hard to borrow and are increasingly reluctant to lend to one another. In an attempt to arrest this creeping credit freeze, ministers examined offering state guarantees to borrower banks on Tuesday but became bogged down in deciding whether to pool such guarantees in Europe or ask countries to go it alone. "The point is to what extent you pool together guarantees for banks," said one official. "There are differences of views on that point." Austria's finance minister and others said two schemes were now being considered -- one a common "harmonized" model of guarantees for banks that need to borrow and another a "consortium" where state guarantees for banks are gathered. "A collectivization of the guarantees at a European level ... everyone together ... Europe makes one guarantee pot ... was ruled out," Maria Fekter told journalists after the meeting.
Drugs: Kenyan MPs accuse police of cover up

The Kenya Police are in the spotlight again for alleged cover up of drug barons in the country. Internal Security assistant minister Orwa Ojode found himself in a tight spot as MPs took him on over reports that security officers had been compromised by drug cartels. Nominated MP Rachel Shebesh claimed in parliament that drug cartels enjoy protection from security personnel citing an investigative report aired on a local television station exposing how senior police officers fighting the drug cartels were allegedly executed by fellow officers. Gichugu MP Martha Karua also called for the redeployment of police officers in Mombasa, claiming that they have, on several occasions, been compromised by drug barons. MPs Ababu Namwamba, Adan Dualle, and Benjamin Washiali sought to know when investigations on businessman Ali Punjani and four legislators implicated in drug trafficking will be concluded. But some MPs expressed concern over implicating people in drug trafficking without proper evidence, saying it erodes their integrity. Ojode said cases of drug trafficking are intricate and require ample time to carry out investigations. He noted that preliminary reports had cleared the five against drug trafficking due to lack of evidence but the final report will soon be out once the Anti Narcotics Unit completes its probe. "It is not something that can be concluded tomorrow. Let the police do their job. By the time we have evidence, we'll arrest the culprits and take them to court," said Mr Ojode. The minister said police had set up a committee to investigate the media reports that also highlighted alleged killing of several officers investigating the drug menace in the country.
Allies hunt Shabaab fighters door-to-door
A door-to-door operation has been launched to flush out Al-Shabaab remnants in towns and centres captured by the Kenyan Defence Forces and their Somali Transitional Federal Government allies. Kenya military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir said that the allied troops were conducting patrols and searching houses in several towns. “The focus is to ensure that these towns and villages are free of Al-Shabaab,” Maj Chirchir told the Nation.
Looking for weapons
The door-to-door search started on Tuesday and will cover towns such as Ras Kamboni, Mnarani, Burgavo, Tabda, Beles Qooqani, Dhobley, Busar and Jilib, which are now under the control of the Kenyan troops and the Somali army. “The exercise is being run simultaneously in the Northern, Central and Southern sectors to ensure that no Al-Shabaab militants are hiding in the towns under our control. “We are also looking for any weapons that could be hidden in the towns and villages as well as trying to obtain information from locals on the possible hideouts for the Al-Shabaab,” Major Chirchir said. The Kenya Navy, meanwhile, announced that its operations on the Indian Ocean had so far eliminated piracy incidents around the Somalia coast close to Kenya. Italian crisis: Silvio Berlusconi vows to resign

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has confirmed he intends to resign after key economic reforms have been approved. His announcement follows a vote in parliament on the budget in which he appeared to lose his majority. Both allies and opponents have been urging Mr Berlusconi to step down as Italy's debt crisis grows. Borrowing rates have shot up in recent days, raising concerns over whether Italy can service its debts. While Italy's deficit is relatively low, investors are concerned that the combination of Italy's low growth rate and 1.9tn euro (£1.63tn; $2.6tn) debt could make it the next country to fall in the eurozone debt crisis. The European commissioner for economic affairs, Olli Rehn, described the country's economic and financial situation as "very worrying". Mr Berlusconi has dominated Italian politics for the last 17 years. He has survived more than 50 confidence votes, but has recently become mired in a series of legal and sex scandals as well as the political and economic crises.
Italy borrowing rates hit record after budget vote
Italy's cost of borrowing has risen to a new record, despite Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi confirming he intends to resign. The yield on Italian 10-year government bonds rose to 6.77%, the highest since the euro was founded in 1999. Investors fear that the eurozone's third-biggest economy could become the next victim of the debt crisis. Earlier, Mr Berlusconi only won a budget vote because the opposition abstained. He won 308 votes out of 630, with 321 abstentions and no votes against. "The government no longer has a majority in this chamber," Pier Luigi Bersani, the leader of the main opposition party, said after the vote. To Mr Berlusconi, he added: "Hand in your resignation." The euro rose against the dollar following the announcement of Mr Berlusconi's plans to resign, up 0.5% to $1.384. Italy's benchmark 10-year debt has been rising sharply and the yield is now past the point that forced other eurozone countries to seek a bailout. Short-term borrowing costs have been rising at an even faster rate. Italy has to roll over more than 360bn euros (£309bn) of debt in 2012. The country's cost of borrowing is much higher than the 1.8% interest rate currently faced by Germany. Greece, the Irish Republic and Portugal have all been bailed out.

Speaking on 13 August 2011, as he announced a raft of new austerity measures: "Our hearts are bleeding. Scandals over his private life
Mr Berlusconi - caught in a series of scandals over his private life, including his alleged dealings with younger women and prostitutes - has frequently turned to a pithy phrase in an attempt to shrug off the allegations. For instance, in April 2011, he said: "When asked if they would like to have sex with me, 30% of women said, 'Yes', while the other 70% replied, 'What, again?'" At the end of the previous year, as allegations swirled about escorts and "Bunga, bunga" parties, the PM deadpanned the line: "I unfortunately have never in my life been to a wild party." However, the talk of scandal has got under his collar at times. He told Il Giornale newspaper in an interview on 12 August 2009 that he had nothing to apologise for and no skeletons in his cupboard: "I deserve to be left in peace: enough violations of privacy." Questioned on the sex allegations in late July, Mr Berlusconi admitted: "I am not a saint, you've all understood that." In an earlier interview with gossip magazine Chi, Mr Berlusconi denied he pays for sex, adding: "I never understood where the satisfaction is when you're missing the pleasure of conquest." More bluntly, in November 2010 Mr Berlusconi hit out with the following: "It's better to like beautiful girls than to be gay."
KENYANS FACING DEPORTATION IN THE NEW US IMMIGRATION POLICY

Kenyans in deportation proceedings may be eligible for temporary relief once the Obama administration begins its systematic review of a backlog of approximately 300,000 pending cases in the US immigration court system. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Justice Department officials will start exercising a policy that gives immigration officials prosecutorial discretion inimmigration enforcement as early as this week. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had earlier told the US Congress that the officials will begin with a “small pilot” review anytime from this week and they hope to rapidly expand the program which will help in reducing the huge backlog of pending immigration cases. Napolitano said that the administration will be separating “high priority” cases that involve criminals from those cases that it considers “low priority”. She said that the “high priority” cases will be at the forefront of the deportation pipeline while the “low priority” cases will be dropped.
Under this policy, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials will prioritize the deportation of those illegal immigrants who pose a danger to public safety and national security. Other cases not falling under this category will be administratively closed. This development comes on the heels of the Obama administration announcement that it had deported almost 400,000 illegal immigrants in the fiscal year 2011. This announcement was met with widespread condemnation by the Latino community who accused President Obama of not fulfilling his promise to revamp immigration policy. A memo in June by the ICE director John Morton to the agency personnel highlights other factors to be considered while making a determination on whether to administratively close a case. These factors include having aspouse, child or parent who is a US citizen or Green Card holder, whether the immigrant’s spouse is pregnant or nursing, the immigrant’s pursuit of education in the United States especially those who have graduated from a US high school or those who have successfully completed a college degree from an accredited US institution, and the length of stay in the US. The immigrants whose cases are administratively closed will be eligible to apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) which will allow them to work legally in the US.
The immigrant will also be able to apply for a social security card. It must however be noted that obtaining these documents will not grant legal status but just temporary permission towork. This new policy has caused some confusion within the larger immigrant community with many who are currently out of legal status unsure of what this means for them. A good number have been flocking immigration firms seeking clarification of the new policy. Immigration lawyers countrywide have warned immigrants against turning themselves in to immigration authorities hoping to be classified as low priority cases. “Kenyans who are not in good status should not rush to turn themselves in to immigration authorities as there is no guarantee that their cases will qualify for dismissal,” Uhuru Ndirangu an immigration attorney in Houston, Texas warned. “Immigration law is very complex and strictly fact based and just because a case may be similar to one earlier dismissed does not mean that it will achieve the same results.” He also warned that though some Kenyans will have their cases dropped and subsequently be able to work legally, the government may decide to reopen the deportation proceedings at a later date. He also urged Kenyans who are already in deportation proceedings to seek legal advise from qualified immigration attorneys and not to solicit advise from fellow Kenyans who often mislead them.
“It is sad that Kenyans who are facing immigration problems do not seek qualified legal representation and end up receiving false and misleading information from fellow Kenyans,” Ndirangu said. “I always say that immigration law in the US is the second most complicated set of laws next to taxation law so the idea that you can navigate through by yourself is very risky. Deportation proceedings can easily cost an immigrant anywhere between $5,000 (Sh470,000) and $10,000 (Sh940,000) in legal fees. Ndirangu who was a police officer prior to practicing immigration law warned that just because the government says this policy will kick in this month, it does not necessarily mean that it will be a fast process and it may infact drag due to politics. The policy has already been met with criticism from various quarters accusing President Obama of playing presidential politics. Most of his critics say that this measure is meant to secure the Latino vote come the 2012 elections. On Friday, the House Judicial Subcommitee, subpoenaed immigration records from DHS over claims that several illegal immigrants with criminal records had been rounded up by local authorities but immigration authorities had not held them in their custody. - JAMBONEWSPOT.COM

Conrad Murray guilty of Michael Jackson manslaughter

Michael Jackson's personal physician, Dr Conrad Murray, has been found guilty of the involuntary manslaughter of the star by a jury in Los Angeles. A panel of seven men and five women took two days of deliberation to reach a verdict. Michael Jackson died on 25 June 2009 from an overdose of the powerful anaesthetic propofol. Murray, 58, could now receive a maximum prison term of four years and lose his licence to practise medicine. There was a shriek in the courtroom as the verdict was read. Outside the courthouse, the BBC's Peter Bowes said that at the moment the verdict was read, the crowd along the street erupted with cheers and chanting. Greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ Brethrens, I am back from Kenya. I praise God for taking me and my husband to and back from Kenya. We have seen God throughout our stay in Kenya. Today's reading comes from Luke 12:21 and it reads: "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God." We are supposed to offer God our acts of service, but the gift He desires most is us. Think of Jesus' last conversation with His friend Peter. Peter was so human: he followed Jesus, learned from Him, served Him, doubted Him, misunderstood Him, praised Him and denied Him. Yet Jesus' final question to His friend was relational: 'Peter, do you love Me?' Three times He asked Peter that question. St. Augustine said all ethics could be summed up in this: 'Love God, and do what you will,' for when you love God you'll want to do what God loves. Though flawed like the Psalmist, you can say, 'I delight to do Your will, O my God...' (Psalm 40:8 NKJV). God created us so that He could be with us. In Eden He came and walked with the man and woman He had made, just to be with them. When He formed the nation of Israel He said, 'I will walk among you and be your God...' (Leviticus 26:12 NKJV). Heaven announced the birth of Jesus, '...they shall call His name "Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us"' (Matthew 1:23 NKJV). It's as if God says each morning, 'I'd like to spend this day with you.' One author writes: 'I can't make myself love God, but I can come to know Him better. Kenya's military might
 
Kenya is to unleash its full military might on Al Shabaab in coming days as President Kibaki on Monday gave a firm thumbs-up to the ongoing operation reiterating that there would be no turning back. Kibaki, who is Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), made the remarks during a National Security Council (NSC) meeting at his Harambee House office in Nairobi. The NSC meeting came against the background of stepped-up security operations in Garissa town led by the police and KDF. Plan to be healthy
Like most things worth having, a healthy lifestyle sadly won’t fall into your lap without any effort. To make healthy lifestyle choices a regular part of your day it is important to make a plan and schedule them in, at least until they become second nature. Rather than making vague plans to “eat more healthily” or “do some exercise”, make a menu for the day ahead detailing exactly what you will eat, or schedule in a date for exercise, establishing an exact time, activity and location. Whatever your health intentions, set your purpose for the day ahead and factor in some time to make it happen.
Ditch your alarm clock
Few of us would class the alarm clock as our favourite household appliance. However, if you find yourself waking up feeling sluggish and miserable and repeatedly pressing snooze, it may be worth investing in a gentler wake-up call. Ideally, our bodies our wired to wake up to natural light; however it is not always possible to do so. Instead, try purchasing a wake-up light which will wake you up gently as it gradually brightens, helping to regulate sleeping patterns and boost your mood and energy levels for the rest of the day.
Don’t overdo your morning workout
While a daily workout is great for your health, research suggests that it may be best to leave your exercise session until later in the day. A study by a researcher from Brunel University, Middlesex, found that heavy training sessions early in the morning compromise the immune system and put athletes at increased risk of infection from bacteria and viruses. While a morning jog or gentle exercise session is unlikely to put you at great risk, try to save heavier workouts for later in the day.
Start your day on a positive note
Many of us start the day with a morning newspaper or by listening to the news. However, while it’s good to stay informed of what is happening in the world, it can also start the day off on a negative note. If you find yourself struggling to get in a positive frame of mind, try following your morning news update with some motivational reading, an inspirational quote or an email from a friend. Set up an alert or write a post-it note reminding you to get up and stretch, take more trips to the water cooler, or organise your workspace so that things are out of reach. Listen to music
Whether you’re travelling to work, sat at your desk or having a workout, listening to your favourite music could do wonders for your health. Not only can playing music help you relax and boost your mood, research has also shown that listening to music you enjoy can promote good heart health, help manage pain and boost the immune system too. Watch some comedy

According to research by the University of Maryland School of Medicine, comedies are the way to go, with research findings suggesting that watching a funny movie or show is beneficial for your heart, while watching horror or war movies can cause mental stress.
Stop mindless snacking
Many people find themselves snacking during the day or evening out of boredom or habit. However, not only is this an easy way to pile on the pounds, but often we may not even enjoy what we’re eating. According to researchers from the University of Southern California, once people have established an eating habit they will continue eating that food whether or not it tastes good and regardless of whether they are hungry. To help stay trim, try being more aware of your eating habits and ask yourself why you are eating; whether it’s through hunger, boredom or simply out of habit.
Keep a diary
If you can’t remember the last time you poured out your heart into the pages of a diary, it may be time to get back into the habit. Research has shown that regularly writing in a diary can boost the immune system, ease stress and depression and help you recover more successfully from traumatic events. UK Tuition fees: 27 universities seek last-minute changes

More than a fifth of England's universities have applied to change their fee packages, just weeks before the application deadline. The Office for Fair Access said 27 of England's universities had sought to lower fees to make use of new measures that could allow them to expand. Universities blame the late announcement of these measures by the government. Ministers say changes should not disadvantage any student. But the National Unions of Students said tens of thousands of students now faced weeks of uncertainty because of the changes. Maximum tuition fees will rise to as much as £9,000 a year next autumn. Universities were required to submit their plans for higher charges, bursaries and fee-waivers for certain groups of students back in April. These were then assessed by the fair access regulator, Offa. This was before the government published its proposals in the Higher Education White Paper, which was delayed by several months. The plans included allowing universities charging less than £7,500 a year in fees to expand by bidding for 20,000 degree places. This was widely seen as a last-minute measure to bring the overall cost of higher fees down for the government after it became clear that more universities than expected were planning to charge maximum fees. Offa said it had received applications from 27 institutions wishing to reduce their average fees to £7,500 or below in order to bid for the 20,000 places set aside for this purpose. It also said it had received new access agreements from seven publicly funded further education institutions wishing to bid for some of these places.
The watchdog says it will assess the revised agreements and inform universities and colleges of its decisions by November 30. In the meantime, institutions must contact applicants affected by the changes and let them know. Would-be students will then have the chance to reconsider their options. Offa also said it would consider any further changes from universities still wishing to change their access agreements. Nicola Dandridge, head of umbrella group Universities UK, said: "This has come about because universities were asked to set their 2012-13 fee levels and financial support by April this year, before the details of student number controls had been decided. "The delayed publication in June of the government's White Paper then shifted the goal posts [of student number controls]. "Some universities will now have to reduce their net fee levels to ensure they can offer opportunities to students who want to study with them."
Support packages
Vice-chancellor of West London University Professor Peter John said the university had decided to lower its fees slightly from £7,498 to £7,400 after the mechanism for calculating average fees was changed. This had pushed them over the level at which they could bid for extra students on the basis of offering a cheaper course. He also said the fact that a number of policy changes came quite late had added "much uncertainty to applications in an already uncertain environment". "The government haven't helped in their message, they have not been clear and there is a lot of concern and anxiety - some students still believe they are going to pay fees up front," he added. It comes just nine weeks before the 15 January deadline for university applications, but nearly 70,000 students have already applied for courses for 2012. Applications from UK students are down year-on-year by 12%. The Vice-President of the National Union of Students, Toni Pearce, said the government's incoherent changes to higher education funding continued to wreak havoc and chaos on students and universities. She claimed ministers had realised that they had failed to do their sums properly, adding: "Tens of thousands of applicants now face an anxious wait at an already stressful time.
"Students looking to assess and compare what support will be available to them will be facing weeks of uncertainty, and many will find that vital bursaries have been replaced with tokenistic fee-waivers." A Department for Business, Innovation and Skills spokesman said: "We are putting students at the heart of the system, with a diverse range of providers offering high-quality teaching. "The Director of Fair Access has made it clear that students need to come first and anyone who has already applied should not be disadvantaged by any changes. Institutions are expected to contact any affected students to explain any changes." The general secretary of the UCU lecturers' union, Sally Hunt, said: "Leaving universities and students to scramble around trying to save a few quid here and there is no way to run a world-class university sector. "The government's decision to move the goalposts on fee levels after it got its sums wrong exposes the mess it has made of university funding."

The 21-year-old human resources graduate became the 61st winner of the famous beauty pageant, beating 112 contestants in a two-hour televised finale that was broadcast to 150 countries to an estimated audience of one billion viewers. Miss Sarcos is the sixth Venezuelan to win the Miss World title. No nation has enjoyed such success in the event. Miss England, Alize Mounter, and Miss Scotland, Jennifer Reoch, were both named among the seven finalists but ultimately failed to crack the top three places. FAMILIES OF OCAMPO WITNESSES GET THREATS

Nairobi, Monday 7th November, 2011 - Fear and anxiety have gripped witnesses who took part in the International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmation hearings after their families were threatened. The witnesses who either testified or presented witness statements used by the defence fear that criminals have targeted their families to intimidate them in the event that the cases go to full trial. Yesterday we established that criminals looking for United Nations Ambassador Yvonne Khamati tried to gain entry into her Nairobi family home. Khamati gave a witness statement in support of Secretary to the Cabinet Francis Muthaura who is facing charges of crime against humanity at The Hague. A group of men raided the home of Khamati in Nairobi on October 23 and threatened to attack the family with a grenade. Khamati was mentioned as one of the witnesses of Muthaura during the pre-trial hearing at The Hague. However, she did not give her testimony before the pre-trial judges. Yvonne's sister, Prudence Khamati, said yesterday the family suspects they are being targeted by people interested in the evidence that her sister has. The matter has been reported to Kileleshwa police station.
According to Prudence, a group of men arrived at the family home at around midnight and camped outside the gate for hours. The gang, whose number the family is not sure of, telephoned the mother and ordered that the families come out of their house failure to which they would attack the house with a grenade. Prudence said the gang left after the family called the police. The incident comes a month after the home of a witness in Nandi was invaded by villagers who attempted evict them. The family then escaped from Nandi and sought refuge at a relative’s home in Eldoret town. A group of youths stoned the house belonging to the witness at his father’s home in Nandi North. The windows were broken but no one was injured.
Police were informed but were yet to make any arrests or record statements by yesterday. The group of rowdy youth shouted slogans against the ICC as they pelted the house with stones. “They kept on shouting Hague! Hague! as they threw stones on the house," said the elderly man who witnessed the incident. Another incident involved former Police Commissioner Hussein Ali's witness Peter Otieno, who was kicked out of his union job for allegedly failing to notify the plantation workers branch in Naivasha that he was at the Hague. Director of Witness Protection Alice Ondieki yesterday said witnesses should apply for protection from the Witness Protection Agency liaison office in room 413 at the Milimani Law Courts.
Ondieki said anyone who needs protection should fill in application forms detailing their needs. “If it is within our mandate, there is someone at the liaison office who will listen to their problem and profile them after they fill up an application form. They will be assisted accordingly. It is critical that a witness for the ICC liaise with the ICC liaison office in Nairobi through us,” Ondieki said. She added that ambassador Khamati should personally visit the liaison office or send someone with written instructions seeking help. “She can bring written instructions to our office for us to know if we have the mandate over her case,” Ondieki said. The six ICC suspects are Maj Gen Hussein Ali, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Ambassador Muthaura, Kass FM journalist Joshua arap Sang and ex-cabinet ministers William Ruto and Henry Kosgey.
The Khamati family fears that the raid on the offices of publisher Gor Semelango of The Truth newspaper was meant to further intimidate them because the publisher’s offices are next to Yvonne Khamati Foundation which is run by Ambassador Khamati. Semelang’o declined to discuss the motive of the raid or if he was one of the ICC witnesses. “I am only privy to one of the incidents where the Mungiki are said to have gone to State House because I was there,” Semelang’o told the Star on the phone. Police spokesman Erick Kiraithe said police were investigating both incidents. He declined to reveal the progress of investigations but said, "We are moving in the right direction”. The Witness Protection Agency was established to provide framework and procedures forgiving special protection on behalf of the state to persons in possession of important information and who are facing potential risk or intimidation due to their cooperation with prosecution and other law enforcement agencies.
A witness in this case is a person who needs protection from a threat or risk which exists on account of his being a crucial witness who has given evidence on behalf of the state in proceedings for an offence, has made a statement to the commissioner of police or a member of the police force, is required to give evidence in a prosecution or inquiry held before a court, commission or tribunal outside Kenya or being related to a witness. The witness is required by law to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the agency after his/her suitability as a witness has been has been verified. The agency then determines the criteria for admission to the programme and the type of protection and measures that will be applied in that respect. Once admitted into the witness protection programme, the agency assists and allows the witness to establish new identity including new birth certificate, national identity card and other necessary documents. This might involve altering physical identity by plastic surgery.

Europe Memorial to honour the life of Wangari Muta Maathai
A Europe memorial service in celebration of the life of Professor Wangari Muta Maathai will be held on 17th November 2011. The service will include tributes and readings given by her friends and colleagues as well as live music.

UK Border Agency hit by fresh 'bribes for visas' scandal

The UK Border Agency is facing a fresh scandal over allegations that a senior employee sold visas to illegal immigrants in return for bribes. Scotland Yard says a high-level employee, whose job was to vet thousands of visa applications from Africa, accepted bribes for allowing Nigerians to enter the country illegally. Samuel Shoyeju, an entry clearance officer, was arrested while working at the agency’s head offices in Croydon, south London, according to the Sunday Times. He is due to appear in court later this week, expected to be accused of possessing false Nigerian passports and concealing substantial cash payments to a bank account in his name, either knowing or suspecting that they were the proceeds of criminal conduct. He is also accused of misconduct in a public office and breaches of the immigration law for allegedly falsely issuing entry visas. The allegations come days after the head of the border force and two senior officials were suspended when it emerged that hundreds of thousands of foreigners had entered without full passport and anti-terrorism checks.
Two killed in Garissa grenade attack

Two people were killed and 5 seriously injured following a grenade attack on Garissa's Pentecostal Church, Northern Kenya on Saturday night. The grenade blasts occurred inside a house within the Garissa East Africa Pentecostal church compound. According to Rev Ibrahim Makunyi, who was inside the compound during the explosion, two grenades were hurled into the house next to the church's main entry door. He said the first grenade did not explode but the second one resulted in a huge blast. ‘’I thought it was an electric fault but when I rushed to the scene I found some victims writhing in pain and lying in a pool of blood,’’ he said. – Nation

Kenya scores poorly in uplifting the living standards of its citizens, according to a United Nations report. Surprisingly, Libya is the best ranked in Africa, occupying position 64 of 187 countries studied in the human development world survey. The report released Thursday ranks Kenya 143rd in the world. The second placed is Tunisia (94 in the world), Algeria (96), Gabon (106) and Egypt (113). Libya’s and Tunisia’s good performance came as a surprise given the political upheavals that rocked the North Africa countries. United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative Aeneas Chuma, who presented the findings, termed the good performance of Libya and Tunisia as "ironical but interesting". Norway is ranked the best in the world while Democratic Republic of Congo takes the wooden spoon at position 187. United States is at position four while the UK is ranked 28th.
Euro debt crisis: Greek PM George Papandreou to resign once coalition deal is struck

George Papandreou, Greece's embattled prime minister, will resign as soon as a deal for an interim coalition government is agreed, perhaps as early as Sunday night, a senior member from his party said. The main goal, duration and leader of such an administration must be agreed before Mr Papandreou resigns, "We only have to wait for the prime minister's announcements in the cabinet," he said. "Everything must be done within the day, otherwise tomorrow it will be hell," Pasok party member Telemachos Hitiris told Greekstate television. Negotiations with main opposition party are stuck on the issue of Mr Papandreou tendering his resignation before the details of a coalition pact on implementing the eurozone bailout are sealed. President Karolos Papoulias met the conservative opposition leader, shortly before the socialist cabinet was due to hold a special session. "This uncertainty that is torturing the Greek people must end. We must find a solution," President Papoulias said before starting closed-door talks with New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras.

Head of UK Border Force suspended after passport vetting procedures 'relaxed'

The head of the UK border force has been suspended by the Home Office following claims some passport checks were not carried out during the summer. Brodie Clark who earns £135,000-a-year is being investigated along with two other senior officials over claims that he authorised the stopping of specific checks at ports including Heathrow and Calais.
It is feared that hundreds of thousands of foreigners swept into the country in the past four months without having their passports scrutinised. Border guards at airports and ports were ordered not to bother checking biometric chips on passports of citizens from outside the EU, it is claimed. Staff at the UK Border Force, part of the UK Border Agency, were also allegedly instructed not to compare fingerprints or other personal details against the Home Office’s database of terror suspects and illegal immigrants. The decisions were taken without the knowledge of ministers and were designed to cut down queues at busy ports and airports and avoid complaints by holidaymakers and tourists during the peak holiday season, it is understood.

Kenya warns Eritrea over Shabaab arms
Eritrean ambassador to Kenya Beyene Russom, was on Friday summoned to the Foreign Affairs ministry over reports that Asmara was arming Al-Shabaab rebels battling the Kenyan military in Somalia. Foreign Affairs minister Moses Wetang’ula summoned Mr Russom and delivered a strongly worded protest that Nairobi will view the arming of Al-Shabaab by Asmara in a very serious light. The minister later told journalists that Kenya was considering all options, “including reviewing diplomatic ties”, a euphemism for severing links. The move follows reports on Tuesday that three planes loaded with weapons for the militia landed in Baidoa, an Al-Shabaab stronghold. - Nation

Jane Mungai from Swindon is only 16s years old but gifted beyond her teenage years. We watched in awe as her voice amplified the 500 capacity theatre while competing in the Regional Finals of the MIC UK unsigned singing competition. Although she did not qualify for the finals, she still has a chance WITH YOUR SUPPORT to make it to the Finals at the London’s O2 Arena.
Even though Jane did not qualify automatically, she embraced her fate gracefully, demonstrating her amazing humility and maturity amid a very sullen Bedford and Swindon community who had travelled many miles to come and watch her perform. I have never felt so proud for in Jane, I saw our own young people coming of age and embracing the opportunities and facilities the UK has to offer.

Greek PM Papandreou faces unity challenge over bailout

Greek PM George Papandreou is facing a major challenge in his efforts to form a government of national unity to handle the country's debt crisis. His governing Socialist (Pasok) party narrowly won a vote of confidence on Friday night, which had placed a vital EU bailout in jeopardy. But the main opposition New Democracy party has said it would not join a coalition under Mr Papandreou. Party leader Antonis Samaras said Mr Papandreou must call snap elections. The prime minister's office says Mr Papandreou will meet President Karolos Papoulias at 12:00 (10:00 GMT) to announce his plans to form a government of national unity. Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said elections could be held once procedures for securing the EU bailout package were finished.
