Nigerians distance themselves from Canterbury
By Pat Ashworth

The Church of Nigeria has deleted all former references to "communion with the See of Canterbury" and has "redefined" its relationship with all other Anglican Churches, in a re-worded constitution announced at the Church's General Synod in Onitsha, Nigeria, last week.

It will now be in communion only with those who share the view that it regards as orthodox. A new section of the constitution reads: "The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), hereinafter called 'The Church of Nigeria' or 'This Church', shall be in communion with all Anglican Churches, Dioceses and Provinces that hold and maintain the historic faith, Doctrine, Sacrament and Discipline of the one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church as the Lord has commanded in His holy word and as the same are received as taught in the book of Common Prayer and the ordinal of 1662 and the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion."

Nigeria announced its intention earlier this year to form a Convocation of Anglican Nigerian Churches in America as a "safe harbour" for Nigerian Anglicans who felt unable to worship in the US Episcopal Church ( News, 15 April). That is now enshrined in the new constitution, which allows the Church of Nigeria to create "chaplaincies of like-minded faithful outside of Nigeria and to appoint persons within or outside of Nigeria to administer them and the Primate shall give Episcopal oversight". Convocation is defined as a "non-geographic collection of Churches and Mission".

The C of E House of Bishops' statement allowing gay clergy to register civil partnerships while requiring from them a pledge of celibacy, continues to be interpreted by Nigeria and other conservative provinces as approval of same-sex "marriage" ( News, 16 September).

The Archbishop of South East Asia, the Most Revd Yong Ping Chung, speaking at the Nigerian Synod on "The Changing Face of the Anglican Communion", announced: "I am not going to let my pulpit get defiled by people who don't accept the gospel."

The Church of Nigeria press release reporting the Archbishop's speech explained: "He was referring to a section of the Anglican Communion, particularly the American and Canadian Churches and lately the Church of England, who condones and approves homosexual marriage."

"I have found my people in Kenya" says Juanita Bynum

"She lighted the entire conference into fire", the queen of the pulpit who preaches with such vigorous and courage moving from side to side on the platform to the other to the excitement of the worshipers. "I have just arrived from Kenya, and I have just found my people in Kenya, people whom we can move with the same waves in prayers and worship. They are poor people in the third world as they call it but Kenyans have made me move into another level." This is the message delivered by the popular American Prophetess Juanita Bynum on Friday 26th August, 2005 in East London at Europe's largest Christian conference - International Gathering of the Champions at KICC, Hackney, in East London. The week long conference is being hosted by Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC). The conference started on Monday 22nd August, 2005 ending up on Sunday 28th August, 2005. Over 15,000 worshipers attend the conference everyday with a morning, afternoon and evening services. The conference has brought together the world's top preachers together among them Pastor Robb Thompson, Joyce Meyer, Prophetess Juanita Bynum, Dr. Dipo Oluyomi, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Reverend Jackie McCullough, Pastor Marcus Bishop, Bishop David Oyedepo and Guest Psalmist Cece Winams.

Among the worshipers on Friday was Kenya's High Commissioner in the UK HE Joseph Muchemi and his wife Mrs. Cecilia Muchemi who entered into the conference quietly and sat at the back. It was not until the end of the conference a Decon in the church informed Pastor Matthew that Kenya's High Commissioner was around. He was quickly ushered to meet the preachers and later joined them for the evening dinner. He was quick to catch up with Juanita Bynum who had mentioned the word "Kenya" more than 10 times during her preaching as she was all excited about Kenya. The American prophetess leaves for US on Sunday 28th August, 2005 promising to go back to Kenya in the near future. The conference has costs £1 million to organise. The church premises was converted into business stores where hundreds of business stands displaying some of the latest technology available in the market today. Among the most interesting stands was stand no. 119 with Wambui Mburu of 0207 2774230 with EcoQuest Air Purification Systems which eliminates Odours, smoke and Tobacco smoke in the house.
