The Rose
Within
A certain man planted a rose and watered it faithfully, and before it blossomed,
he examined it. He saw the bud that would soon blossom-but also the thorns. And
he thought, "How can any beautiful flower come from a plant burdened with so
many sharp thorns?" Saddened by this thought, he neglected to water the rose,
and before it was ready to bloom, it died. So it is with many people. Within
every soul there is a rose. The God-like qualities planted in us at birth grow
amid the thorns of our faults. Many of us look at ourselves and see only the
thorns, the defects. We despair, thinking that nothing good can possibly come
from us. We neglect to water the good within us, and eventually it dies. We
never realize our potential. Some people do not see the rose within themselves;
someone else must show it to them. One of the greatest gifts a person can
possess is to be able to reach past the thorns and find the rose within others.
This is the characteristic of love: to look at a person and, knowing his faults,
recognize the nobility in his soul and help him realize that he can overcome his
faults. If we show him the rose, he will conquer the thorns. Then will he
blossom, blooming forth thirty, sixty, a hundred-fold as it is given to him. Our
duty in this world is to help others by showing them their roses and not their
thorns. Only then can we achieve the love we should feel for each other; only
then can we bloom in our own garden.

Bomb blasts rock Iraqi churches
Bombs have gone off near four churches in the Iraqi capital and one in the northern city of Mosul, police say on Sunday 1st August, 2004. The first occurred outside an Armenian church in central Baghdad. The next hour saw three more churches hit in what looks to be orchestrated attack. At least two people are reported killed and more than 20 injured in what seems to be a new tactic by insurgents. A blast was reported around the same time later in Mosul, where a police station was bombed earlier in the day. Witnesses said a car bomb detonated outside an Armenian church as an evening service was getting under way. It blew out stained glass windows, and scattered pieces of hot metal across the street. The wreckage of at least three burned out cars was left in its wake. "I saw injured women and children and men, the church's glass shattered everywhere. There's glass all over the floor," Juliette Agob, who was inside the church at the time, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying. Ten minutes later, as the emergency services raced to the scene, a second blast went off outside a Syrian Catholic church some 400 metres (yards) from the first church. An ambulance driver said two people had been killed. At around the same time, a suspected car bomb went off outside a church in the northern city of Mosul. "It's a crime. It's Sunday, we were at mass. There were a lot of women and children," Bishop Raphael Kutami at the Syrian church was quoted by AFP news agency as saying. "There are so many injured and we don't know how many. We were coming out of the church," when the bomb exploded, said another priest at the same church. The BBC's Peter Greste in Baghdad says that until now there has been no significant attacks on Iraqi's Christian minority, although they were becoming increasingly concerned about the possibility of violence. Many Christians run Iraq's alcohol shops, which have been subjected to recent attacks. Earlier on Sunday, at least five people were killed and some 50 injured when a car bomb went off near a police station in Mosul. CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOS

Signs of the time
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has urged all French Jews to move to Israel immediately to escape anti-Semitism. He told a meeting of the American Jewish Association in Jerusalem that Jews around the world should relocate to Israel as early as possible. But for those living in France, he added, moving was a "must" because of rising violence against Jews there. France's foreign ministry said it had asked Israel for an explanation of the "unacceptable comments". French Jewish leaders, interviewed on France-2 Television, said Mr Sharon's remarks were unhelpful. "These comments do not bring calm, peace and serenity that we all need," said Patrick Gaubert, of the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism (Licra). "I think Mr Sharon would have done better tonight to have kept quiet." "It's not up to him to decide for us," said Theo Klein, honorary president of Crif, which represents French Jewish organisations.
Trend
France has suffered a wave of anti-Semitic attacks coinciding with renewed fighting in the Middle East. "We see the spread of the wildest anti-Semitism" in France, Mr Sharon said. The latest French government figures show 510 anti-Jewish acts or threats in the first six months of 2004 - compared to 593 for all of last year. In recent years there have been bomb attacks against a number of synagogues and Jewish schools in France. Jewish tombs have also been desecrated.
Mr Sharon acknowledged that the Paris government had made efforts to tackle the problem. He pointed out that France had a large Muslim community estimated at less than 10% of population, or about five million. Mr Sharon said his advice to French Jews was that moving to Israel was "a must and they have to move immediately". The BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris says this is not the first time that Mr Sharon has spoken about the need for French Jews to leave for Israel, but rarely has he been so blunt. "We have immediately made contact with Israeli authorities to ask them for explanations about these unacceptable statements," said French foreign ministry spokesman Herve Ladsous. Our correspondent says there is irritation in France at the idea that life for Jews there is becoming dangerous - especially as the government has made every effort to show that anti-Jewish acts will be severely punished. A week ago President Jacques Chirac rushed to condemn an apparently anti-Semitic attack on a Paris train that turned out to be a hoax. Our correspondent adds that his haste only aggravated passions among many in the Muslim community who feel they are the instant scapegoats.
